Early week update below. Enjoy!
Drabble 9: Let's play: Good cop, bad cop
The air was heavy in the interrogation room; it could be cut with a knife, figuratively speaking.
Bhavya knocked and entered and gave Gauri two files and left.
"Thank you Sergeant. Gauri nodded to her. She shared a file with Omkara whilst she went through the other:
Professor Asma Siddiqui
Ayush Sharma
Whilst the latter, sat opposite them, looking grim and afraid, drinking tea.
They had, by now, found out the identity and details of this boy who had approached them in the college.
Ayush, a twenty three year old Post-Graduate Science student, specialising in Biomathematics and apparently helping Prof. Siddiqui in the day to day sometimes. He was running errands for her in the hope that one day she will offer him a teaching assistant position, but it had not happened so far. It was very clear from his statement that he was aware the Prof was taking advantage of him.
It was ok if it was just that, but now things were getting out of hand. He was scared that she was involved in some underhand dealings of the criminal kind. He had noticed some receipts and bank transfers that involved huge sums of money.
"How can we be sure that you are not involved in all this, and pinning it all on Prof. Siddiqui now that you know a police investigation is going on. Gauri questioned him further, posing to the suspicious bad cop.
"No m'am. I had no idea of all this, I was in this only for academic gains. But I found out about the sinister activities in this department and didn't know what to do. That's why I approached you today. Ayush answered .
"It's ok Ayush, we understand, speaking against the professor without any proof would have put your academic career at huge risk. Tell us exactly when and how you became suspicious something was going on. Omkara was playing the supportive good cop.
"Sir. I noticed a few biological samples missing from the laboratory some very expensive ones, like one of the human brain, which are hard to come by. Ayush started.
Sherlock and Holmes exchanged glances, as soon as they heard about the brain, reading each other's thoughts, "So that's what they found in the Arora household and the two cases are certainly linked.
"Why didn't you report it? Gauri was in full on performance mode.
"M'am, I was not sure in the beginning, I thought someone maybe borrowed them and will return them eventually, and then I noticed the bank transfers. It felt like someone was trading the samples out. Ayush looked genuinely terrified at the prospect.
Omkara gave him a supportive glance and said, "Carry on. How is Prof. Siddiqui involved?
"Sir. It is her bank account the money is coming to. Not a registered one, so not very obvious, but I know as I have been looking after her accounts for a while. Ayush continued.
"Please sir, m'am, I am very scared. Save me. Prof. Siddiqui can do anything. She even threatened me and...
"And who? Mr.Arora? Mrs. Arora? Do you know of anyone else's involvement in all this? Gauri egged him on.
"M'am, I don't know anything. Prof. Siddiqui has a way of telling people to behave without being very explicit. But I noticed that Prof. Arora was a good friend of hers. And Mrs. Arora was working in the laboratory with me, as a senior research scientist. Ayush was holding something back, they felt.
"Tell us about Mrs. Arora. Did you find any change in her behaviour lately? " Omkara tried to get more out of him.
"Sir, she is a talented scientist and a good person. Very quiet and keeping to herself mostly. She didn't seem to get along very well with Prof. Siddiqui but no one does. Her research was very interesting. But Prof. Siddiqui was trying to put her off it, somehow. Lately, she seemed quite afraid and even stopped coming to the lab in the past few weeks. I haven't seen her for a month atleast. Ayush volunteered more information.
The dynamics of the people involved in the case was becoming clearer to both Gauri and Omkara.
"Thank you Ayush. We will give you police protection until the case is sorted. But you need to leave town asap, we can't risk any danger lurking around you, you are a key witness in this case now. Before Ayush could protest Omkara carried on, "Don't worry, we will take care of leave formalities etc. nothing will happen to your academic score.
"And remember, if you are involved in these crimes in any way and have hidden the facts from us, no one will come to your rescue. Do you understand, is it clear? Gauri was quick to point out, it was her duty, as the bad cop.
They rang the bell and Bhavya came to take Ayush away.
"So what do you think Holmes? Do you think he is telling the truth? Omkara was the first to speak.
"Can't be sure, Sherlock. I think he is telling the truth, but not revealing everything. He may have more information which he is holding back. Perhaps he is too scared to reveal what he knows. Gauri answered looking in the distance, as if speaking her thoughts out.
"I agree. I got the same feeling. But this is enough information to start investigation on Prof.Siddiqui. I will request a search warrant from Shivaay. We also need to question Mrs. Arora in the hospital. Let's do that first. Omkara suggested.
They were just about to leave the room when their pagers beeped together. It was the police doctor.
"The post-mortem report for Mr. Arora is ready. Forensics has also confirmed their findings. Let's discuss when you are ready. Dr.Anika
Gauri looked at Omkara after reading the text, wondering if they should split up, when as if on cue, reading her thoughts, Omkara answered.
"Let's go to the forensics lab first.
When Gauri raised an eyebrow to confirm what she had heard, Omkara caught unaware, justified, "Together. I reckon, you haven't met the forensic team yet, this will be a good time.
