The Mantle Handed Down
"From now on, that side of the house is yours and this side is ours." Mr. Oberoi declared.
"Good, I don't want to see anyone of you on my sides of the house." Choti Ma concurred with him as she snuffed her nose the other way.
I watched the would-be batwaara of our home. I almost wanted to laugh. Is this what we've become? Shivaay Bhaiya is gone and it hasn't even been a full 24 hours since he left and these people have already started dividing the house. Not to forget that O Bhaiya had to be at the office while they were doing this. Brilliant, simply brilliant. I yawned at the childish bickering.
I sat down over on the couch, in a bindaas style, putting my leg over my other thigh. I was bored with the cat-mouse play, it seemed like age old banter. I've heard this too many times at this point to give a reaction.
"Hey, you," I called out to the servant that was present during the debacle. "Clean that up." I pointed at the silly chalk line that 'divided' our house.
The servant responded with fear. Mr. Oberoi and Choti Ma looked to me as though I was joking. Mrs. Oberoi was no different. Chote Papa, Dadi and Bhabhi seemed almost relieved, but they were still in distress. The air became more intense, as the servant I ordered didn't move.
"Did you not hear me? Clean it up! Hurry, fast!" I scolded the servant who stepped to the line. Mr. Oberoi stopped him.
"Rudra, what's this childishness? Don't come in between, this is our matter." Mr. Oberoi barked at me, I actually smiled mentally. It was laughable that he, of all people, was scolding me.
I gave a confused look to my supposed father. "Hmm, that sounds like something I'm supposed to say. You should be stopping this childishness, not me." I left the elders of our house shocked with the amount of tadi I started throwing. Bhabhi was the first to recognize it, that I was acting like Shivaay Bhaiya. But I guess acting is a polite way of putting what I'm doing.
"What do you means? Jethji, control your child. You couldn't control your youthfulness, atleast control your children." Choti Ma retorted at my sudden authority to Mr. Oberoi.
Mr. Oberoi huffed at me. "Rudra, don't interfere in our business. Stop this bachpanna now!" He explained, but I simply scoffed with my eyes closed.
Looking back to him, I stated. "I would, but your business is interrupting with my business. So, if you would clean the line. I don't like repeating such simple instruction."
"Your business?" Mr. Oberoi exclaimed at me.
"Of course, how dare you try to divide what's mine." I argued, annoyed at their courage to face me.
"Yours? This is MY house! How dare-"
"Lower your voice, Mr. Oberoi. I don't like you yelling at me." I calmly cut in between his obnoxious barking. "And this is not your house, it O' and my house. The shares to our property are under who's name? Think Mr. Oberoi. Let me tell you: Omkara Singh Oberoi and Rudra Singh Oberoi. So legally, you have no right to divide anything and last I check, O doesn't want the batwaara either. Besides, maybe you didn't hear Shivaay Bhaiya before he left, but he said I am in charge of this house when he and O Bhaiya are away." I explained calmly, but with a grace of Shivaay Bhaiya and Annika Bhabhi's tadi.
Mr. Oberoi and Choti Ma looked at me in shock, but the next few words must have hit harder. "There will be no batwaara." Dadi, Bhabhi and Chote Papa looked to me with relief while the cat and mouse had become boiling red.
"Now that we're done with that, go. And stop your insistent bickering, you sound like children fighting over a toy. It's sad coming from you adults." I glowered with a smile, dismissing them and this stupid morning debacle.
"Not so fast," A sour face appeared. "If the members of this house want a batwaara, who are you to stop them?" Everyone turned to Svetlana, I glared at her unwanted entrance.
"Who am I? I own this house, why should my property be split between them?"
There was a pause. Svetlana smirked and shrugged nonchalantly. "It's my property too, and I've decided to answer their call. The batwaara will happen." She announced. I stood up slowly to face her. The distance decreased between us as I walked to her. Stopping at her, I stared her right in the eye.
"Really, and you're going to incite our batwaara how?" I shook my head to Svetlana, amused by her game.
"Simple, I'll stand on the opposite side of you. I'm this house's bahu. It's my duty to give the members of my house what they want." Svetlana crossed her arms at me. I felt like she was being ironic, being a Bahu and talking about ripping the house apart.
"So you said it and somehow the batwaara will happen? Fascinating, and you think that's how this works? Now, I may not have a degree in law or business, but even I know that's a pretty long process when the case is a pending fight. Sure, you can instigate this batwaara, but you can't exactly see it through when it will be time consuming. Who says the shares will still be yours and you'll still be here by the end of it?" I leaned in as I informed her, Svetlana started to squint her eyes at me as we started to collide.
Svetlana scoffed. "I can't believe this. You, a child, are facing me, Svetlana. I told you before, but I don't deal with kids. I'll destroy you like this!" Svetlana snapped her fingers as she arrogantly dismissed me. I couldn't help but smile.
"Before that... Coming back to you being a Bahu, well I will remind you that in due time, you won't be. Although I'm curious, where is your 'husband'? I hope you didn't shove him into a freezer box. That's pretty cruel and unusual treatment to your own husband right?" I joked with her, much to her displeasure.
Svetlana seethed at me. She was not a fan of my disrespect, but I was just getting started. No matter, I'll leave it for another day.
"Oh Bhabhi, relax. Everything in time," I extended my arms out, readying her any challenge knowing of the consequences of facing her, "you might be this house's bahu but you are far from achieving anything. This separation between us brothers, it's a minor setback. I assure you, like always, Ishqbaaazi will win and we will usurp you out of this house and our lives once and for all. This victory of yours is just one battle, you haven't won any war yet, jaaneman." I crossed my arms as I announced with vigor as I stood against the devious woman.
Svetlana chuckled at me, batting her eyelashes as though she wasn't taking me seriously. "Really? Shivaay Singh Oberoi couldn't even hurt me, what could you possibly do? To me, you're just a child. Even though I don't face children, I'll just do what I did to him to you, try facing me then."
I grinned. The winds were still in my favour. "You wouldn't, because your plan was to separate us, if we learn the reason Shivaay had to hide the truth and leave the house, your plan would flop onto you..."
More than one eyebrow raised at me, it was an understatement to say everyone was surprised, but I enjoyed Svetlana's expression the most. I let her know I wasn't falling into her game by already telling her why it won't work a second time. Better we skip the formalities.
"You must think you're sooo smart, don't you Svetlana?" I continued. "You think separating us has weakened us, but you're dead wrong. Distance doesn't make us weaker, our hearts are still together. We will always be ShivOmRu. Even if my brothers aren't standing with me, they're still behind me and we will take you down. Bet on that!" As I challenged Svetlana, I actually felt like Shivaay Bhaiya and O were behind me, watching over me. I hope I was making them proud. This time, I'll be the Great Wall, even if for short while. For as long as I can, I'm going to defend our home from this woman. Svetlana could see my unwavering courage, it was colliding with her steel arrogance. She gritted her teeth at me, I didn't flinch to her glares. I won't let the mantle that Shivaay Bhaiya entrusted me with go in vain, not without a fight.
Flipping her hair, Svetlana walked away with a rage. We'll make sure she realized she made the biggest mistake of her life, to try and separate us. I glanced at my family. Some were surprised and others were uninterested. Mr. Oberoi walked away in anger with Mrs. Oberoi following him, calling out to him. Choti Ma huffed as she turned away and left the Main Hall. Chote Papa followed her in hurry. The servant I ordered earlier began to clean the chalk up. I looked to Dadi, who sat on the couch with Gauri Bhabhi holding her. She had witnessed everything, I could only gauge what she was feeling.
"Rudra..." Dadi called out to me in disbelief. I walked up to her, kneeling down on the floor in front of her. I placed my hands in her lap. "What's wrong Dadi?"
I felt Dadi's hand caress my hair. I accepted it willingly. "Puttar, you changed." I paused and looked to Gauri Bhabhi, she also looked disheartened at what had become of me.
I smiled half-heartedly at the two women. "Oh Dadi, you're worried for nothing. I'm still your Rudy. Maybe I did change a little, to face and support everyone, but I still am. Really. You said yourself once, no matter how old kids get, they'll still be kids to their parents. And for you and Shivaay Bhaiya, I'll always be your and his kid Ru. This is just for now, once we get rid of that Botox Kumari, you'll see." I chuckled as I held Dadi's cheek to reassure her.
Bhabhi stood up. "Rudy Bhaiya, I'm with you. I want to help. We'll get Bade Bhaiya and Bhoujai back and get that Sultana." She clenched her fist, ready to fight.
I patted her shoulder. "Thank you Bhabhi, but right now, O Bhaiya needs you to stand by him."
"But Rudy Bhaiya, how will you face that Sultana alone?" Bhabhi asked with concern. I appreciated it.
"Who says I'm alone. I have an old friend who's by my side again. With her and Shivaay Bhaiya's courage, we'll come out on top." I brimmed with confidence, reassuring Bhabhi who nodded at me.
"But Rudra.." Dadi patted my head again. I could see the worry for me in her eyes. I sighed and cupped her face.
"Don't worry Dadi, no matter how much tadi I throw, I'll always be Rudy." I winked as I stood up. I walked away, smiling. Checking my phone, I got a message from Sumo. It's time to start the counterattack.
The End.
