||CHAPTER-14||

"Did you send them the message? "

Dark, obsidian eyes turned away from the phone to take in the silhouette of a woman seated on the bed next to the Oberoi spawn. It was quite unfortunate to be caught red-handed snooping around the Oberoi archives, much less by a lady who seemed to read his intentions like a book. He only helped her on the compromise that she would give him what he wanted as soon as he finished her dirty businesses.

"Yes. And I've cleared its traces too. "His eyes followed her fingers which were idly tracing the young Oberoi's jawline, her eyes calm and calculating as she stared at his sleeping face.

"What do you plan to do with him? "

"That's none of your business ", Came her curt reply. He bristled at her indignantly.

"Considering the risk I took into getting him here, I suppose I do have the right to know, don't I? "

Her eyes finally moved away from the boy to fix onto him with a glare. "I thought you were only interested in the tapes I promised to give you from the archives, Dr. Barat Chabra... "Her glare took on a leer as she gave him an onceover "Or should I say Mr. Abhay Thakur"

Abhay slowly pulled off his false beard and the wig before shrugging off his coat. He sneered at her in disdain all the while giving himself a mental pat on the back for a job well done. She thought she was so smart, ha!

He may go by the surname Abhay Thakur, youngest business tycoon and the CEO of Agastya Enterprises, a well-established business group in and around Europe, but what she didn't know was that he was an Oberoi by blood, the very blood she was up against.

He had learned at the archives that convincing her that he was the Oberoi's enemy was enough to gain her trust, however temporary it may be and the intense dislike she had for the family was evident. Telling her that he too was an Oberoi didn't seem like a good idea back then and however daring Abhay maybe, he still valued his life.

He carefully scrutinized the boy snoozing peacefully on the bed, oblivious to the threat surrounding him and the lady sitting beside his bed.

She was cunning and methodical; Abhay had to give her that. The moment her eyes had landed on the footage of the youngest Oberoi on the balcony, she had outright told him that the kid was going to land in the hospital.

And, damn, she had been right!

And from there, she had planned the family's every move, making sure to always stay one step ahead. She had planned on bribing the Oberoi employees into starting a strike, called on her friend from Goa who by the looks of it seemed to be a doctor, had him pose as Dr.Barat and had managed to kidnap the kid without getting caught!

Breaking out of his musing, Abhay noticed that she was still staring at him. He looked away, partially creeped out and unnerved.

She was dangerous, played her cards well and from the way she moved around, it was obvious that she got resources and connections to back her up. It made him consider what she really wanted from the rich Oberois'. Definitely not money or fame!

Abhay cleared his suddenly dry throat.

"I've kept my part of the bargain and I hope you will keep yours. " He gave her a sidelong glance only to have a key thrown at him. "Third locker, sixth room to your left" She muttered; her eyes going back to stare at the boy again.

Abhay blinked at the key in his palm. Well...That was easy, he thought.

He was pretty sure she would trick him or take him off guard. Oh well...

Cautiously, as if backing away from a beast, Abhay tipped towards the door and into the hallway. He finally let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. God, he was never working with her ever again!

Inside, the lady threw a tentative glance at the door before gliding across the room towards the discarded cloth and wig. She smiled as she gathered them in her hands. Foolish man, she inwardly cackled at his naivety. As if she would let him off the hook... A soft groan immediately alerted her towards the sole occupant of the room.

Was he getting up already? She frowned as she made her way back to the bed. She took in the frown lines over Rudra's face and concluded that he was having a nightmare. Nevertheless, she slowly opened the drawer next to the bed and pulled out a syringe and a bottle.

"Dreaming about your Shivaay Bhaiya now, are you?" she mocked the prone body. She observed the boy's innocent face as she filled the syringe with a murky fluid.

"Now, let's get a good vein under those triceps". She couldn't help but admire his soft, supple skin beneath her fingertips in her quest for a vein.

It was quite obvious that he had been pampered and protected by the brothers. Heck! The child was literally their only source of laughter and fun; he had been the heart to Shivaay's body and Omkara's soul.

And she felt like an utter fool for not seeing their obvious weakness all along! Rudra was their Achilles' heels. She had been so obsessed with the task of crumbling the wall and the pillar that she completely missed the foundation they cleverly shielded underground.

And now, she smiled victoriously as she readied the needle against his arm, the foundation was brutally uprooted and taken away. However, what puzzled her was what they saw in him. As far as she knew him, he was childish, obnoxious, incompetent, petulant and spoiled rotten.

"Isn't that your high school science project? " An amused voice questioned her from the door. She ignored the new comer in favour of sticking the needle into Rudra's arm. The boy involuntarily flinched, his palms searching for an invisible hand to hold.

"Careful there... "The man commented, slowly approaching the pair on the bed, "I may have exaggerated the extent of his injuries in the duplicate chart I gave Abhay but that doesn't mean he is in the clear zone yet"

Carefully, he sat himself on the other side of the bed. "For starters... "He pointed at the heavily bandaged chest, "His ribs are still sore from taking the full impact of his fall and his vocals are still tender and ruptured."

When she continued to ignore him in favour of tending to the injured boy with gentle hands, he sighed in frustration. After years of growing together in the orphanage, she read him like the back of her hand while he was as clueless as always about the gears turning in her head.

"Come on, now... "He asked her enticingly, "You call me in the middle of the night and implore me to travel all the way from Goa in a day to treat a total stranger... "

He narrowed his eyes at her. "I would have believed he was someone important to you from the way you handle him like glass but now that I've seen you inject a potential toxin into him, I wanna know what your motives are."

"My motives? " She questioned him, her voice gliding around the room like smooth silk, "I plan to keep him with me for now and let those brothers of his cruise the whole world in search of him... "She tenderly ran her hands through Rudra's hair and to him; it almost seemed affectionate, almost.

"Let them live with the fear of the unknown. Let their days be plagued by the thought of their precious boy's safety and his whereabouts while their nights haunt them with guilt and nightmares of his sufferings. "Her eyes gleamed malevolently under the shades of the dim table lamp and the lack of her usual disguise did nothing to hide her cruel face.

"And once they get around the fact that he's no more... "Her eyes finally met his and he was thrown back by the sheer vengeance he saw in them, "I'll give him back to them. Dead. "She gave him a sickly sweet smile.

"Svetlana!" He finally called out, shocked by her eccentricity.

"Don't!" She screeched, right back at him. "Don't call me that when I am unmasked!"

He sighed tiredly. "Fine. Tell me, how I should address you then, your highness?" he asked her, frustrated beyond belief.

"Charu" She muttered softly, her eyes a thousand miles away.

"Charu...?" He whispered softly, "You want me to call you by the name of your dead mentor's child?!"

"SHUT UP!" Svetlana hollered at him, "Don't you dare go there!"

"How can I not when you are literally destroying your life over some petty revenge!" He regretted it the very second it was out of his tongue. Sharp nails dug into his throat as she wrung his neck with her bony fingers. But what choked him was not the grip but looking straight into her flaming, glistering eyes bend on destruction.

"She was not just my mentor Her voice broke at the vehemence of her speech, "She was like a mother to me, my God, my saviour! She leaned across the bed to look him in the eye, "AND THOSE FILTHY OBEROI MONGRELS KILLED HER!"

"Didi..."

One word and the change had been instantaneous.

He started in wonder as the fire in her eyes immediately died down and the grip of her hand around his neck abruptly stopped.

He noticed that somewhere during her explosive rant, she had carelessly placed her other hand against Rudra's cheek, the hand against which the boy was happily caressing his face against in his slumber.

He snorted at the devastated look in her face. He vaguely noted that she hadn't taken her hand away.

The tense atmosphere had completely dissipated as if it had never been there. He cleared his throat when Svetlana continued to awkwardly stare at her hand and the mumbling boy with perplexity.

"Um...I should take a look at him while he is still asleep. He seems like the kind who hates hospitals and doctors"

He hid his amusement when Svetlana blinked as if breaking from a daze. She looked at him in stupor before giving him an uncertain nod. And just like that, she walked out, leaving him alone with Rudra.

When he was sure that she was out of earshot, he laughed heartily and took his time to really look at Rudra for the first time. Boy, he looked so young and vibrant even in his sleep!

Whenever he accidently opened the closet of Svetlana's history, it would take them days to reconcile and for the rage to flush out of her system. However, this time, it had taken just one word to stop the usual rant.

Just. One. Word.

"So you are that infamous Rudra Singh Oberoi, huh?" he smirked, playfully pulling Rudra's cheeks. "I hope we get along nicely since it's obvious you will be around for a while". He felt a serene smile pull at his lips when Rudra subconsciously snuggled against his side.

"I take that as a yes." He laughed. "I may not be able to defend you against all her tricks but if you ever need me to keep you healthy and alive..." he leaned in to whisper into Rudra's ears, "Then call me by my name, Veer."

He straightened up and reached for his equipments by the table. "And I'll swoop in to save you". He whispered softly before jumping into the task of taking the slumbering Oberoi's stats.
