||CHAPTER-15||
He hated being small. The fear of being crushed under the adult's feet in the public always plagued his mind. He hated the fact that his mouth never cooperated with his thoughts. He couldn't ask the adults around him to help him get back home.
They asked him who he was, what his name was, where his parents were and what an adorable child like him was doing all alone in the park. He couldn't tell them because he didn't know. And then, they left him all alone by the park bench, afraid to help.
Who was he? How did he get here? He wanted to go home!
Tired, hungry and scared, he did what any child his age would do. He cried.
He wailed and sat on his hunches with tears of frustration seeping in rivers down his chubby cheeks, his child's mind screaming at the passers-by to notice him and lend him a hand.
And he cried until he was wasted and his eyes couldn't produce any tears no more, before curling into a tiny ball under the park bench where he slept. The cool autumn wind blew against his prone form but his dreams made him feel warm and fuzzy. He smiled dreaming of kind, kanji eyes and a soft voice humming him a lovely shayari.
He felt safe.
And suddenly, they were fading way, leaving him alone in the darkness. He ran after them as fast as his tiny feet could take him. He yelped and fell face first on the dark floor when his legs couldn't carry him further.
He felt fresh tears fill his eyes as he gazed longingly at the fading figures. His lips trembled as he reached out his tiny hands towards them, his heart crying in agony at the realization that he would never reach them. He closed his eyes and wept at his helplessness.
And that's when he felt a pair of warm hands lift him up from behind and cuddle him against an equally warm chest.
"You poor thing... "An angelic voice whispered against his ears. He held on to the voice like a life line.
"What's your name? Where are your mama and papa? "He immediately clung to her like a panda. He didn't know the answers to those but she was his only hope and no way he was letting he go.
"Ost, ost!" he tried to tell her that he was lost. When words failed him, he hiccupped softly and pleaded her with sad eyes.
"It's alright... "He felt her place a gentle kiss on his temple, "Didi will find them for you! " She grinned down at him and he smiled back.
She carefully balanced him on her hips looking around the now empty park all the while chattering on about her name, her day, her baby sister and coming across him curled up under the bench.
"A...a...ania..." he called her name out experimentally.
She cooed at him and nuzzled her nose against his. "It's not Ania, its..."
Her face lit up suddenly when she saw a man dressed in a suit approach them from the gate. However, he sat against her shoulders in trepidation and did not revel in her joy.
He had been with this man before and his childish mind helpfully provided him that he was strict, grumpy and downright mean sometimes. He internally panicked when his angel bound towards the man.
"There, there..."She cooed at him with a gentle smile, "We can ask that security guard over there. "
However, when they were within arm's length, her smile dropped the second the man snatched him from her without a word and before she could admonish the man or anyone could utter a word on the matter, the man quickly tucked his little frame against his side before giving him a hard smack against his thighs.
A loud shriek echoed across the park followed by a sharp inhale of disbelief. "That's for running away, you insolent brat! Do you have any idea the trouble I am in with the young master!! "He heard the man scold him before he felt another sharp slap against his tender thighs.
A pitiful wail plundered his ears before he realized it was his very own vocals crying out in pain and humiliation. He lost count of the number of times he had cried today. He writhed against the grip on his arms and turned towards his saviour only to see her blurred figure retreat from him through his teary eyes.
No! He screamed internally as he reached out his hands beseechingly towards her. She was fading away just like the other two in his dreams and the more he thought about being left alone with this cruel man, the more he struggled.
"Damn brat..." the man scowled, "Looks like you need your legs broken to make you stay put". When he saw the man raise his hands again, he curled himself into a ball and instinctively screamed out the first name that came into his head.
"Niaaa!!"
The expected slap never came; instead, he felt the grip on his arm loosen. He looked up to see the man clutching onto his eye looking murderous and in pain. He blinked, confused. He swore he did nothing to cause this.
"You pesky brat!"
He took off towards the park bench when the man made a move to grab him with his other hand. That's when he felt the same, firm arm pick him up and settle him against a familiar hip. He felt a hand run through his hair and a familiar heartbeat under his ears.
He smiled. "Nia..."
"Ah, so you finally learned my name..." She grinned down at him like a mischievous cat, "Well, at least half of it". He blinked curiously when her face turned stern and her grip around him tightened protectively.
"Hey you codger! What kind of goonda are you?" He face softened when she glanced down at him. "Hurting a defenceless child, you should be ashamed of yourself! The next time I see you here it won't be stones but boulders that I throw at you!" she sneered at the man in anger.
Stones? Boulders? He owlishly blinked when his eyes fell on a heap of stones to their right. And that's when it hit him!
She had left him momentarily to gather stones to pelt his offender. The sudden realization made him look at the face of Nia with new admiration and love. She had saved him yet again and promised to do so in the future!
"Well, that takes care of him..." his Nia huffed indignantly before looking down into his eyes. She carefully raised her palms and brushed off his tears before hopping towards the bench and plunked herself down with him on her lap.
She bent down to give him a quick kiss on his forehead. "I wish I could find your mama and papa..." he saw her scowl cutely, "...and give them a piece of my mind. What parent would leave their cute, bubbly child all alone? I mean I would totally adopt you if I can't find them!" He squealed at her enthusiastic laugh.
"You are such an adorable baby..." she chimed in, pinching his cheeks and tickling under his chin affectionately, "I bet you would grow up into a fine, dashing lad!"
He sighed happily at the petting and leaned his back against her, revelling in the tranquillity surrounding her. Her voice, her delicate touch and her concerned eyes made him feel warm, loved and safe. A feeling he remembers sharing with only two other souls in the world.
Suddenly, a pair of kanji eyes and a soft voice assaulted his cloudy memory. Broken phones, sculptures, hot chocolates, swimming pool, sleeping in the middle, late night cooking, secret thappads, a yellow apron, affectionate pats and warm hugs...
He felt his heart rate accelerate when no name or faces came with these memories. Who was he? What was his name?!
He felt his body jolt awake and a scream pierce through his abused throat.
"Bhaiya!"

Veer froze midway on his walk to the room that held the young Oberoi heir, the tray of medicines he held in his hand crashing onto the tiled floor from his surprised jerk at the unexpected shriek reverberating through the house.
It took a minute for him to process that the painful, heart-wrenching wail had indeed come from a human and the second his mind caught up with him, he found his legs rushing towards Rudra's room.
Did he reopen his wounds? Was he in pain? Did the morphine wear off?
A thousand questions ran through his head but what he didn't expect was to see the partially healed boy break through the door and rush down the stairs with tears streaming down his face.
"Oi calm down!" For an injured person, the kid was pretty light on his feet. "You will hurt yourself if you keep this up!" He howled and sped down the stairs. But Rudra seemed wild, screaming for his Bhaiya like a chant as he made a mad dash for the...
Veer swore loudly when the boy ran outside their mansion and into the busy street. Curse Svetlana for leaving the front door open! When she came back from her little scouting, he was having her head on a platter!

"Shivaay, maybe we should call Om..." and before he could growl at her again, she quickly added,"...and have you sit in the back seat while he drives."
When he made no move to reply, Anika sighed tiredly and observed the passing houses and plots with red-rimmed eyes. Ever since the inspector gave out the official notice of Rudra's kidnap, Shivaay had been driving nonstop, street after street, into every possible nook and cranny in search of the ambulance that had held his brother.
And she had gone along with him to provide a fresh pair of eyes. She gave him a quick glance taking in his hunched shoulders, his unwavering eyes and his steady gaze through the windshield.
He hadn't eaten, bathed or slept since the incident at the mansion and Anika could see the strain it was doing to his body.
"Shivaay..."
"Do you know how long it took?"
She was startled at the sudden question aimed at her just as much as the hoarse voice coming out of Shivaay's mouth.
"Four years, 6 months and nine days."
He turned towards him and their eyes met briefly before he turned back to observe the road.
"Four years, six months and nine days, I patiently waited for him to utter the magical word, for my Rudra to call me Bhaiya'" His voice choked at the intensity of his emotions and Anika felt her heart grow heavy and warm tears seep into her eyes.
"But you know what..." he chuckled humourlessly, "He called me Papa' instead". He sniffed before taking in a deep breath.
"I still remember the adoration in his eyes, the feel of his tiny hands around me and that cute head nuzzling into my shirt in search of comfort..." The rear mirror reflected the scowl of self-loathing in Shivaay's face.
"I was his hero..." Shivaay gestured wildly to himself in disgust.
"And I..." his voice wavered and Anika immediately reached her hand out and laid it comfortingly on his shoulder.
"Shush now, Shivaay". Anika cooed at him. "Like Gauri said, as long as we are here he's going--"
She screamed and jolted at the impact of Shivaay suddenly hitting the breaks and literally falling over the steering wheels to side-track the car from the road.
Her heart thundered against her ribs when the sound of screeching tires hit her ears and she felt the cars swerving into a halt. What had happened to cause this?!
"Shivaay!" she admonished his recklessness. He almost gave her a heart attack!
"Those damn kids..." she heard Shivaay growl under his breath.
Kids? What kids? She reached out to Shivaay when he abruptly got off the car and slammed the door shut. She swirled around in her seat to see where Shivaay was heading off to when her eyes fell on a pair of young lads crouched on the middle of the street.
Anika squint her eyes against the twilight as one boy seemed to be hugging and shielding the other from his surrounding while the other seemed to be trembling and...crying?
Before she knew what hit her, she was out of the car and beside Shivaay on his stroll towards the other two. They seemed to pay them no attention and were absolutely rooted on spot.
"Hey, you two!" Shivaay called out, annoyed at being ignored. "What's up with you jumping in front of a car in the middle of the street?! You could have been killed!!"
The elder of the two, Anika assumed from the aura of composure around him, seemed completely focused on pacifying the other who seemed to be having a panic attack.
"Shivaay!" She held him back from charging the two men on the middle of the street, "I think the younger one's having an attack"
Attack...the word resonated in his ears. On closure inspection, he could make out the silhouette of the boy's trembling frame in the arms of the other one. It reminded him of his baby brother.
Shivaay's eyes narrowed taking in the boy's build, the almost subdued sobbing and the familiar tranquillity that filled his heart.
He took hesitant steps towards the pair, almost afraid when a sudden anticipation filled his heart.
It was the sense of peace and giddiness which he usually acquainted with the presence of his Rudra.
But he wasn't here now!
Or was he?
