Chapter 11: Speaking of Sons, Daughters and Daughter-in-laws? It's all one and the same to me!
With the paperwork out of the way Badi Ma and Annika headed home, while Ram Singh expertly navigated the Mumbai evening rush hour and they chatted about all the current and future contracts that would be taken over by Annika. Anil would ease her entry into the position till she felt capable of handling it herself and for knowledge of any financial accounts Badi Ma suggested Papa would be best to guide Annika. He was the real genius with numbers Jhanvi informed Annika, but while he was quiet about it, while Shivvay just liked to show off she laughed.
We pulled into the driveway at the entrance almost the same time as Tia was entering the house. As we stepped out and climbed the steps we caught up with her at the entrance, she smiled and greeted Badi Ma and completely ignored me as she swept past me.
Fair enough, I thought, as I recollected this morning's prank that could not have gone down too well with Mr.Oberoi who would have, at the very least, burst a vein at Ms. U's shocking actions. Ms.U, short for Universe as per Sumaya and for Hey! U , Protein Shake!! as per DevRu).
Once in our room I quickly freshened up and changed for the evening as I had taken it upon me to supervise two of the three major meals that we had at home, breakfast and dinner.
Saumya and Prinku liked to do the lunches after they got back from college and I enjoyed the new recipes they would try out.
I was ready to walk out when I saw Mr. Oberoi walk in, shut the door behind him, lead against it to block my exit and casually cross his arms across his chest.
I almost laughed at the pose because he closely resembled the Oberoi Security Guard that stood at our gate, only the uniform and baton were missing and yes that guy was taller.
This man should really 'kick-start' that dead brain of his I though because I could leave the room via the French windows that faced the poolside if I wanted to, just like I always did when I wanted to escape him.
'Duffer Singh Oberoi", I thought and smiled secretly.
But I was feeling lazy today and not only was that was the longer route but it was also too much work.
I decided I would take the direct route out and use my newly found 'super power' if I needed as a last resort. What Bade Papa said was true; he loved sparring with me at least once a day. What an unhealthy habit for him considering he lost most battles or was outsmarted by me I smirked.
"Not now Mr.Oberoi",I said with a tired sigh as I hastily put on my wrist watch, checked the time and walked towards the door noting the steel grey eyes accompanying the anger on his face while I calmly continued , " I have dinner to supervise and I am already running late. Can we discuss these 'sweet nothings' after dessert in the moonlight by the pool while we gaze at the numerous twinkling stars in the sky??"
I finished in a voice laced with sweet sarcasm and followed that with the most charming smile I could put on. As I stood very close to him and looked up at him with an infatuated adoring look of a girl completely smitten by him, I felt him take in a sharp breath.
It had been 4 days after we married that I had unexpectedly stumbled upon this secret weapon I possessed over Mr. Bhagad Billa. It was my very own 'super power' over him. I had learned that this smile and this look had the most unexpected and wonderful effect on the man when tied in with a few patent 'Shivvay' practiced moves.
After all I did warn him once that I was a very fast learner and Shivvay's lessons had not only been repetitive but lasting. I had learned from the master himself.
This 'super power' was good for me but I guess not so much for him because it left him at a huge disadvantage. I rarely used it and kept it only for emergencies and today was one such emergency.
I took a step closer, still wearing that look, and placed my hands lightly on his arms, closing the distance between us till our bodies were almost touching; as my upturned face almost touched his lower chin while his nose was angled at the famous 90 degrees it would be when he wore his arrogant look, I waited for that magical change.
... and ...three, two, one... I mentally counted until it went poof! Magic!! I almost forgot myself and clapped in delight. It happened every single time without fail.
Shivvay's eyes turned a shade deeper than my shawl and his eyelids lowered till his look was almost hooded. He took in a quick, sharp breath and then his breathing slowed, his body relaxed as though in a trance and lowered his head and leaned into my face. Hands still on his arms I took a small step back and he followed like a moth to a flame... another small step ... and then another till I knew he was no longer leaning against the door.
Then steadied him before I released my hold on him to make sure he would not fall on his face like he did the first time, side stepped deftly and calmly, walked quickly to the door and opened it calling out as I left, "Don't be late for dinner Mr. Oberoi. Your favorite sizzlers are on the menu today courtesy of Rudra and Om."
I knew I had just a minute or 2 before he recovered and reacted by running after me and catching me.
I sprinted down the hallway and rushed down the stairs while I was being stared at by a very baffled Tia who was sitting with Pinky Aunty in the living room. She looked at me with disdain, shaking her pretty head in disapproval at my ungraceful act.
I didn't care what she thought because the 'Devil Himself' was not coming for her, he was coming for me!!
I ignored Pinky Aunty's question about where the fire was because I could almost feel Shivvay's third eye opening to burn me to ashes any minute now and had to make sure I was not in the line of direct fire when he took aim.
As I reached the bottom of the stairs and swung around the banister towards the kitchen I stopped to catch my breath and that's when I heard the roar, "ANNNIIKKAAA!!! Come back here this instant!!!"
Not bad I thought as I checked my wrist watch and grinned. This time I made it down in 2 minutes flat. I was getting good at this.
I heard him running down the hallway and thought to myself, time to find cover and reinforcements. He would dare not do anything in front of Papa who I knew would be reading his paper over a cup of tea in the dining room now.
As I ran towards the safety of the kitchen, I looked over my shoulder to see a very worried Pinky Aunty following me haltingly as she alternated between looking up towards Shivvay and then back at me trying to understand what may have happened up there.
I smiled at her over my shoulder as I beat a hasty retreat and almost bumped into Prinku who wore an alarmed look. I said hello, hugged her and ran into the dining room and almost collapsed on the chair next to Papa.
Anni Bahu??!!", asked Papa worried and concerned, "what has happened??!", he stated as he set his mug down slowly on the table.
Before I could reply the cause for my breathless collapse on the chair rushed in and strode up to me looking down at me like the God of Thunder. "What the hell was that??!" he asked angrily his hands on his hips.
"What is the matter Shivvay??!!" asked Papa sternly as a caution for him to back off and lower his tone while he spoke to me.
"I was trying to have a conversation with her but she tricked me and then ran out on me!!", he said in a much lower but exasperated tone, as he took a step back.
"And that justifies you yelling after your wife while you chase her around the house and talk to her in a threatening stance??!!" Papa inquired in a quiet but patronizing voice.
Shivvay was visibly uncomfortable at that very vivid description from his father and self-consciously rubbed the back of his neck. Om and DevRu who had come out of the kitchen, were now leaning against the dining room walls enjoying the whole exchange between father and son.
"And please enlighten me as to what exactly can one do to trick the Great and Mighty Shivvay Singh Oberoi that will distract him long enough to let one give him the slip?? This is one for the record!!" said Papa in a puzzled but teasing voice and glanced in amusement towards Om and DevRu who already had their eyebrows raised questioningly.
"Actually not much if you are Annika Singh Oberoi apparently", drawled Bade Papa as he jumped into the conversation while he entered the room and firmly clapped a very embarrassed Shivvay on his back.
"Is it that hard to figure out Shakti considering your son is a young red blooded Oberoi male with a very gorgeous and elusive wife who shares his room and not only keeps him at arms distance but on his toes as well to his distress and frustration??!!", laughed Bade Papa in good humor.
"I think I am going to go and freshen up", muttered Shivvay as he turned on his heel and walked away. I was sure, as he strode back to our room; he was recollecting the fun Bade Papa had at his cost at lunch today.
"Anni Bahu", said Bade Papa softly as he patted my head and laughed, "I have not seen this side of Shivvay since he was a child! You do bring out another Shivvay that has been long forgotten by Shivvay himself! He squabbles with you like an equal partner, chases after you around the house like a child, is possessive of you like you are his favorite stuffed toy that someone else is stealing, is insecure and less sure around you that makes him more human, is confused around you because you question him and his wrong actions and of course puts up with every name you baptize him with no matter how irritating. What exactly did I do to deserve a daughter like you, however brief that might be, in my foolish and obnoxious son's life?"
"Papa", I whispered in a low voice choked with emotion, not able to hold back the tears anymore as I clung to him and broke down. This is what it felt to be loved by a father I realized in amazement. I was going to soak this in and never let it go.
