Part 3 : Through Rose tinted glasses...

Rose stretched back and looked at her sketch pad. They had given each other a challenge that day. They both had to draw something out of their comfort zone. So she was forced to draw a portrait, and he had to do a watercolor landscape.

She peeked at him, and giggled. He was grimacing at his drawing with distaste.

"This will never see another set of eyes, okay?" he said warningly. She laughed out uncontrollably and he smiled back.

"No, we shall exchange our pieces for each other to display... and never say for whence it came! " she spoke theatrically. She was quite happy with her piece. Of course, artsy portraits and sculpting was Om's expertise, but she did know how to do a good anime...

Omkara was a very good looking man. She was not immune to his charms. He is calm and grounded and such a sweet man. No melodrama, annoying pranks, childish man-boy mind games. He understood her and didn't try to ask more of her. She was quite sure she didn't want a boyfriend and he respected that.

But he was oh so good looking ! They sat separately in lectures, but she often found his eyes on her. Those eyes are her weakness. They share laughter and concern, but there are times when they are intense, and those times her heart would start beating madly. Is this love? Why do I like the way he looks at me?

She wondered if she loved him, all the time. She probably did, in a light hearted way. She enjoyed the feeling, but didn't want to act on it. She was here to study, and it was gruelling. They were both doing well in exams and she didn't want to mess things up.

At the end of the first year, something weird and unexpected happened. Her ex boyfriend John appeared out of the blue. Yeah, the one who cheated on me with my best friend.

He just showed up outside the lecture theatre one morning as class finished. Dressed casually with roses in hand. She blinked in surprise as he came forward to give them to her with a wide smile. She glanced sideways and saw Om raise his eyebrows questioningly.

Smiling awkwardly she introduced John to Omkara.

"Om, this is John, we used to go out in college..." she saw Om's jaw clench, remembering the history behind that. The men shook hands and passively sized each other up. John was nervous , she observed, as he dismissed Om and asked to speak with her in private. Suddenly he wasn't the cute hunk she crushed on in college. He paled in comparison to Om.

Om raised his eyebrows enquiringly at the request for privacy. She blinked reassuringly and moved aside to one of the benches at the courtyard. Seated ill-at-ease, she watched John fumble with words.

"Spit it out John, what is it?"

"Heh, sorry Rosie. I know me showing up like this is very awkward, considering how things were when we last saw each other. "

"You mean when I saw you and Meena arguing about when you should dump me?"

John flinched. "Meena and I are over, Rosie."

"So? Why do you need to fly all the way here to tell me this?" she asked directly. An uneasy feeling crept over her. She looked up and saw Om lounging around opposite them just out of earshot. He shot a quick smile and she relaxed. Om gestures with his hands, What' up with him?

I dunno? She shrugged back.

Shall I come bail you out? he asked. She shook her head and all of a sudden John burst into tears in front of her. The man held both her hands to his chest and wept bitterly.

"Forgive me Rosie!! I feel awful for cheating on you. I am guilty, yes. But please allow me the chance to make it up to you. We were so good for each other, I miss that. Please Rosie, give me another chance..." He sobbed as she tried to extricate her hands.

She glanced up and saw Om's comical horror-face. She stifled a grin and gave him an admonishing look.

"But it's been more than a year, John. Why now? " she tried to piece the puzzle.

"Your father, Mr. D'Souza came to see my father. They had a long talk and your father called me out and told me off for the horrible state I put you in. Because of me, our families' business cooperation ended, and I must take the blame for it. Papa has taken ill recently and made losses, he had to take a loan from Mr. D'Souza."

"So what? For that loan I must marry you also?" she put it bluntly. John looked up with his red eyes and searched her face, which was clean of malice.

"Would you forgive me, Rosie?"

"Sure, I forgive you."

"Really? Thank you Rosie. Thanks for giving us a second chance... I promise..."

"Wait, I forgive you. But I want nothing to do with you..." she glanced towards Om who was unnervingly staring at her. " I have moved on.."

"You have someone else? " he persisted.

"Yes.." she said simply. But the repercussions were rising and splashing like waves inside her.

She left John there and walked away alone. Om sensed her need for privacy and didn't follow. She sat holed up in her room for two days to process what was going on in her heart.

Darn it, she'd gone and fallen in love with Omkara...

This story flows with such simplicity! Love the equation that Omkara and Rose have developed where they can converse with merely their eyes. ❤️
