Hi guys this is my first short story, I hope you like it. In my AU Ishaana isn't a con girl, instead she is an upper middle class girl who meets Omkara in college. Please leave behind comments and feedback, and also if you would like to receive updates please add me as a buddy.

An Artist and his Muse.

Chapter 1:

Sculpting a masterpiece to perfection is never the intention of any artist; it's always the end result of their sheer faith. One can never achieve it through calculated preparation and well-planned strategy, it comes with its natural and primal instinct. And that was something Omkara had learned how to live with. Inspiration couldn't ever be conjured, it always had to be discovered, whether it was in the most intimate of places or the most mundane and obvious of ways, and that too at just the right time. There were far too many paths and endless possibilities, but never a correct recipe.
As Omkara scraped away the excess clay, his hands focused on the mere precision of creating a perfectly textured surface, one he had previously visualised. An immediate calmness settled over his heart as he continued to shape his piece using such a learned precise action, one only he knew how he had perfected over time. Probably to any other human eye it would have come across as an insignificant or just a plain and irrelevant technique. But for Omkara it was the real difference between his genuine craft and the useless mediocrity other eyes settled for. It was what the buyers were unknowingly paying for; his craft.
This studio for Om was his arena, though, his playground where he was always in a complete serene space with just himself and his art. It was a dialogue no other human being could ever understand, and one he refused to explain.
Along with his art, he had a passion for music, but unlike how most perceived him or his personality, he loved it all. From the Beetles to Nusrat, it was all music to his ears. It was the perfect background to completely block all those behind and around him. Their constant nagging and quarrels could be put on mute for at least the time he had alone with his art. It wasn't that their thoughts never occupied his mind when he was alone, they always did, they always played on repeat even if sound could be manually blocked because he could still see his mother drinking herself into oblivion, he could still hear his father and his mistress parading around their filth in front of everyone, and he could still hear Choti Maa unnecessarily screaming her lungs off at something that Shivaay wasn't prepared for or wasn't doing to her will. This was just the house he had grown accustomed to, and had unfortunately had to grow up in, but silently watching them go about and suffer still made it somewhat more bearable.
Like any other day Omkara was lost in his music so he could concentrate on his upcoming exhibition, moulding away a bust similar to the one he had sketched on paper. His eyes and ears couldn't dare to leave the work in front of him.
As he worked away Janhvi stood by the door silently watching over him and deliberating how to speak to Om. She was never the regular visitor in his studio, cause he never let anyone just come in, and neither was anybody in the family understanding enough to enter sincerely, so they just let him be. She hesitated as she made her mind but eventually walked in hoping that the conversation she planned in her head would go somewhat as she had fictively imagined.
Seeing Om completely consumed by his work only caused Janhvi to walk around Om's sculpture so she could fall into his line of sight. Omkara without a second thought noticed his mother's unusual presence in his studio, and that too if he wasn't wrong while she looked sober. He dropped his headphones onto his shoulders and immediately smiled in surprise acknowledging her presence.
"Is everything okay Ma?" Janhvi returned a smile knowing her son knew too well that she was here because something was wrong. Even though her smile went straight through her lips he could tell it wasn't a genuine one, it never was with Janhvi.
She turned her gaze towards the sculpture Om's hands were busy with, as she moved her eyes to examine it carefully her eyes lit up, "this looks impressive Om." Omkara just smiled at first, but looked back at his mother, "It has a while to go before the exhibition. Once you see the entire installation I have in mind you'll actually like it far more. I have a new approach in the gallery, this time, they finally caved in and let me access the exact space I had been fighting for."
Janhvi was evidently proud of her son's work, it was pity that no one ever gave him the credit he deserved, but as she gazed at the sculpture once again she couldn't help but say, "a work in progress tends to look far better Om, probably cause it shows the effort being put into it to make it so neat."
Om tilted his head to the side at his mother's unusual yet philosophical comment, since she was never the one to talk in metaphors. If anything it confirmed that she wasn't talking about his sculpture anymore.
He looked back into his mother's eyes and saw a genuine concern, "what's wrong mom, has dad done something again?"
She just laughed in an unimpressed and a nonchalant manner, "I'm afraid it's not him Om that I am here for, it's you instead."
Omkara just looked perplexed at his mother's cryptic tone, "me? What about me?"
Janhvi looked away for a second and gulped unsure of how to tell her son this piece of news that she had found out much earlier, but now he would find out anyway if she didn't tell him soon enough.
"You know our annual charity fundraiser, mostly all our major shareholders and associates end up coming." She asked hoping for some acknowledgment.
Omkara now just looked utterly confused and even felt patronised, "uh yeah... Ma I may be an artist but I am not an idiot, it's on tonight and I'm actually the one who practically organised the entire event since Shivaay Bahia was too busy with bhabhi to care a damn about it this year." He was genuinely disappointed at how unaware Janhvi took him for these things, "plus its such a hoax of a night, we end up splurging triple the amount we actually raise for social causes, I can't even comprehend something like that, and yet you guys still go ahead with it every damn year." With that, he momentarily returned to face his sculpture, yet his eyes remained on his mother.
"It's not that Om, and I know you're not stupid. It's just you probably didn't have enough time to check the guest list this year." Omkara just half smiled and then secretly smirked at her, "seriously Mom? Come on! Who could possibly be that special that it would actually surprise me that there on our guest list? I went by previous years so I know essentially everyone that should be coming tonight. How often do we let new people join our special club'," He mocked her using his hands to quote their exclusive stuck up society?
Janhvi knew this was the only moment she was going to get to drop the one name that would explain it all, "Ishaana."
And with that Omkara finally closed his eyes realising why his mother was playing charades with him all this time, why she was so damn cautious as of how to bring her up. Dreading the one name with an un-natural amount of guilt for over the last five years clearly had seemed to have gotten him nowhere, because the one mention was enough to stir up all buried emotion.
Janhvi didn't stop there, though, she continued, "she's engaged Om, to Rohan Mehra. She will probably be arriving with him tonight, I just wanted you to know this before you crossed paths with her tonight."
Om stayed silent, he didn't exactly know how to react to the second part of the news. It shocked him none the less, moreover that Rohan was Shivaay's biggest business rival, which made him think that how did such information go of unheard. But then he also realised that it was Shivaay, his biggest protector, he could have done anything to never let Om even catch a whiff of this news. It's only because he got so busy with Anika that he completely forgot that she would probably be arriving with Rohan tonight. All Om knew was that a circus awaited him tonight, and Ishaana was no more than just a part of his exclusive society's ludicrous charade.
He returned to face his sculpture and let his hands start moulding again, trying to regain all his lost composure, "I'll be fine mom, I'm happy for her." And that's all he said hoping his mother would leave. Even though Janhvi still waited for more, nothing came. She could feel the heat radiating off him, he was shocked for certain and there was definitely much more that he would have wanted to say. But she was sure she would end up seeing the result of that tonight, and not necessarily the best of places to see it.

Hello there! Welcome to the forum! :)

The title to your story piqued my curiosity - it is apt. Omkara is an artist and nothing usually is more important to an artist than its muse. I really liked your writing style.

I also like how you are building the whole story. Omkara's thoughts here were interesting. I like Omkara. This middle brother has some unexplored territories that make him just the right amount of mysterious. Jhanvi is a fabulous character and a writer can really explore her various facets. Apart from the brothers, she is someone I really, really like. 😉 The way she is trying to subtly and tactfully bring up the topic of Ishaana had me all sympathetic and appreciative of her. So dearest bade bhaiya is already married to bane-of-his-existense Anika bhabhi? and also happens to be pretty happy with her? Sweet! O's disappointment on his mother's annual party declaration and subsequent dread that sweeps through him on hearing her name. Really brilliant work here.👏

Overall this a fabulous start to, I am hoping, a brilliant SS. Hoping for some absolutely entertaining and similarly enthralling chapters. This is a very well written chapter. Keep it up and keep writing.😊

Awaiting the update. Do you send PMs on updating? If so, please send one when you update. Also, accept my buddy request?

Cheers,
V😊

Chapter 2:

Ishaana understood the predicament she was in. The mirror gleamed at the sight of her, she precariously put on some mascara making sure not smudge it on her face. Unsure of how tonight was going to go, she could feel her finger tips sweating because today was the first time she would be publically going out with Rohan. Rohan was an odd man, with limited conversation, which showed his intelligence rather than a pretentious nature common amongst his people. She finished with her makeup and proceeded to put on her dress, a gift from Rohan after their first date. The cocktail dress had a plunging backline with hem well above the knees, definitely too revealing for her taste but she thought it was the appropriate gesture. Its colour royal blue only highlighted her porcelain cream skin, but as she continued to stare back into the mirror the only thing she could feel radiating off her was a false image she had carefully constructed for herself. The reflection staring back at her was of a person on very different path than she had ever set for herself, it was safe to say that this one lacked emotion to a large degree. By no means did she not feel loved in her life, or even happy, she just couldn't help and wonder if this was the so-called maxima one could ever achieve of happiness? When she was young happiness had a far more immature meaning, it was more instinctive, and high on euphoria at meaningless things in life. Now happiness seemed far more reserved, far more tamed.

Ishaana flattened out the non-existing creases of her dress and waited impatiently for Rohan. This event was his business rival Shivaay's fundraiser, and being a part of the same fraternity ensured that Rohan would be invited. If before she ever went to any of these events she only did so by being his public relations head. But now so much was different about these event, firstly she was going as his fianc and not just as an employee, then they were going to Shivaay's family home for the first time and not just any hotel. For all the time she had worked with Rohan all she had known about Shivaay was how rarely did he ever host anything at his family house or invite people in. He had separated his professional life quite significantly from his personal one, especially over the past three years from what she had learned from others.

But out of all these places this was where Rohan wanted to make their first public appearance as a couple. She wasn't going to lie to herself because she felt nervous for sure, if anything she had realised these people who were Rohan's colleagues were really just scavenging vultures preying on all outsiders. But Rohan had also assured her that it was the safest place to make such an appearance since he knew Shivaay, as he had once also married an outsider, making their home probably the most understanding environment to do so. Rohan may have been Shivaay's biggest rival but oddly enough they shared a weird comradery between them, maybe because they were both so ambitious and driven, or maybe because they both saw beyond the world they were completely consumed by.

Just as her thoughts were driving her in circles the doorbell rang and Ishaana walked over to open the door. Rohan stood there with a rose in his hand and dressed impeccably sharp in a black suit. He couldn't help but mock faint in exaggeration as he laid his eyes upon Ishaana, and she couldn't help but laugh back at his lunacy. Rohan may have been quiet but there were moments like these where she knew why she fell in love with him, it was his simplicity. She grabbed the rose and kissed his cheek slowly and then invited him in, but he told her straight to grab her purse as they were already getting late.

Before they knew it they were giving the Oberoi valet their car keys to park their car and instead head inside. Just as they were near the entrance Rohan clutched Ishaana's hand tightly so she could look back at him, "you nervous?" He asked quietly, "a little," she replied looking at the gates of the entrance. He pulled her a little closer so he could kiss her shoulder in assurance, and she smiled in return. "You'll be fine. Just don't let anyone intimidate you. You're strong enough to be fighting your own battles." Ishanna nodded in agreement and clutched his hand tighter as they finally walked inside.

To say that the Oberoi's had done an immaculate job of decorating the house would have been an understatement, it was truly a palace one would say. Rohan on the other hand was from a small town where his family still chose to live. He preferred his sea-facing apartment, one where Ishaana knew she would probably be moving in after they had gotten married. Though she couldn't help but admire this family's opulence, even though she could smell luxury from every corner of the house she couldn't deny sensing an unusual warmth as well. It was such a contradictory feeling because for her luxury was generally associated with plain isolation, this house though defied that. Ishaana could recognise most of the faces inside the party as they were all mutual acquaintances, and soon enough she caught a glimpse of Rudra, the baby Oberoi. Rudra was the other Oberoi brother alongside Shivaay that helped run their business, in most of Shivaay's absences it had been Rudra that Ishaana had interacted with. He was someone who was sweet most of the time, but there was something she could never understand about him. Rudra was known to be a growing businessman himself, but he was a far more accomplished flirt. Anything with essentially a pair of legs was his prey, but not when it came to her. It wasn't that she behaved rudely or had sent of signals to stay away from her, and neither was she hungry for his attention but she never understood why was she such an exception? She knew it had nothing to do with being Rohan's girlfriend or fianc, cause she knew very well that these titles for the little Oberoi never mattered.

Just as this internal analysis was going on she saw him approaching them, "welcome Rohan, welcome Ishaana." He smiled but only very slightly, as almost that it pained him to do so.

Rohan clearly didn't make much of it but Ishaana noticed too well, " how are you both doing?" Rohan answered immediately, "so far pretty well, right sweetheart?" As he put his arm around her. Rudra looked down almost as he was trying to avoid their casual display of affection but then quickly looked back up, "I'll send for some drinks, anything you prefer?" And once again before even letting Ishaana speak he ordered for her," sure she'll have a glass of red wine and I'll like your best scotch,"

Rudra smirked back. "I'll send for someone immediately, enjoy yourself guys," and with that he left. Ishaana looked around and saw some eyeballs staring, some mingling, and most just sloshed out completely. But the night hadn't begun on too bad a note she thought.

Omkara on the other hand silently sat at the bar sipping away his favourite scotch, it had been a while since he had a proper drink himself, and he knew tonight he was going to need one. As if he had eyes behind the back of his head he could see her come straight in, and it was enough to stop his breath and just take in her evolved appearance. She was still breathtaking, but much more refined, no longer a girl who's heart he had torn apart, but rather a women who was capable of ripping every heart in the room. She most definitely had an aura about her, but one that was no longer warm or radiating light, instead it was much cooler, reserved and even quite restrained. He could probably sit here all night and just stare at her because she would never recognise him, not like this, he was no longer the Om she once knew. His hair was much longer for starers, he refused to get a tapper hair cut like he used to. He liked wearing his reading glasses now, back in college the fad had been to wear contacts. Omkara refused to put himself through that torcher anymore, also he knew how to clean up well in a suit these days, back then jeans and oversized shirts would have sufficed. She was a true change in his life, if only he had paid her the respect she always deserved. Om then took another swing of the drink and felt the burn clench his throat but at the same time quench his thirst.

Thank you so much for all the likes and reviews, they mean so much to me as a writer.

Please read, like and review.

Oh the feels here!!! My heart is pounding with anticipation.! Res. 😊
Unres:

Apologies for the late unres.

Okay, so my heart was pounding while reading this chapter. It was a third person view of how Ishaana is faring, and I was hoping for a little possibility or tiny ray of IshKara here. *sigh* You know when you mentioned fiance anything would have done really - Rohan is abusive or he is blackmailing her or she is plain unhappy with the guy, but instead you gave us a likeable - okay scratch that - tolerable fiance. Damn girl why??? I am going to desparately cling to the part where Rohan is not letting her speak for herself as a minus point for this guy and Ishaana should break off with him😛😆

So Ishaana and Rohan have a fairly simple relationship and this guy will definitely not just let go of his girl without a fight! Can you see how everything is being analysed by me in an 'IshKara' sense? It is frightening😛

The arrival at the party as a couple is their first outing as an engaged couple - talk about irony man! 😆 Rudy boy's antics are so freaking obvious... I love him!

That last paragraph gripped my heart. The realities of the present with respect to the mistakes of the past. There is just something about desolate men and their brandy that tugs my heart strings.

Fabulous chapter 2, Rani. Absolutely engrossing chapter. 👏
Going to jump over to Chapter 3 now, it seems like an enthralling read already.
