Chapter One
Anika
I woke up to the shrieks of my oh-so-lovely aunt. The sun had not even decided to show up at this ungodly hour and the drama for the day was already in gear. Sometimes it made me wonder, what about my life was so monotonous that I had to resort to occupying myself with daily soaps.
"Ankia, you little piece of crap, get me my green tea right now! Don't you know I'm on a strict diet starting today?" She screeched as I rushed out of my bedroom and straight into the kitchen.
To be honest, I wouldn't bother replying even if I was at my 2xx energy level.
And within ten seconds flat, my aunt gulped down her scorching hot green tea. She sighed and hummed in contentment as she shoved the cup back into my hands.
"Now get lost, I have an appointment with my salon-girl! And dare you return without my money!" She shooed me away and I decided to just let her be.
It is 5:16 am already and I had to get to the college canteen by 6:30 am. So there is a desperate need for me to rush.
By the time I got out of the house, the sun was glaring right into my eyes. This was the only moment when I wished to own a pair of decent sunglasses.
"Bye, Anika didi!" Sahil waved and I waved back, running out of the colony gate. That little boy was my life. He was the only one I loved and all I had. Before I could carry on with my happy thoughts a glossy black car came to a stop just two mere inches away from me.
I growled as the window rolled down, expecting none other than that foolish Prince Oberoi. But to my surprise it was my best friend Priyanka with an apologetic look masking her expression.
"I am so very sorry, Nika! I was coming to pick you up!" She smiled.
I got in and muttered. "Is it just me or am I really the bull's-eye for every single member of the Oberoi family?" She laughed.
"It is not that, Nika. I'd never try to kill you! But I may kidnap you from time to time." Priyanka beamed as she hugged me.
"What do you mean?" I questioned horrified at the thought of skipping another day of my job.
"Hold up, you forgot? It is Shivaay bhaiya and Tia's engagement soon and it is a huge deal!" She squealed.
"I don't exactly see myself in a bridesmaid's dress so why do I have to be caged in the Oberoi Mansion with you for the next three weeks?" I raised an eyebrow.
"It's because you're my best friend, duh!"
"Just in case you forgot, Pinku, everyone in that house hates me!" I pointed out.
"But Dadi loves you." She turned away and I sighed in defeat. The next fifteen minutes of the ride was silent as the driver smoothly drove into the Oberoi estate and slowed down to a stop right in front of the giant doors of the Oberoi Mansion.
I reluctantly stepped out of the car and the sight that greeted me, froze me right there on my spot. I had seen people in love. Be it an elderly couple or the childhood love thingy. From holding hands to comforting hugs, from interlocked fingers to light pecks on the cheek, I had seen it all.
But never in my existence had seen a woman pulling a man down to her level and pecking him right on the lips even if it was pretty offhanded and lasted for about 30 milliseconds. He straightened in part surprise and part shock as she giggled.
"What was that for?" Hints of pink highlighted his cheeks and the surprise was evident in his question.
"See you later, sweetheart!" She playfully pushed him away and walked back inside, her heels clicking against the marble floor.
Through all of this, Priyanka was obliviously sitting in the car, sorting out her shopping bags while the driver had mysteriously vanished the second he'd parked the car. But I, the mighty Anika, stood here like one of Omkara Singh Oberoi's discarded sculptures, with my jaw slack and eyes falling out of my sockets.
He turned around and walked down the steps with his chin high and a royal composure that made me question reality itself. This had to be the only incident in the history of the world that caught this man with a cold heart, pleasantly off-guard.
After all, it was not every day that you caught Shivaay Singh Oberoi blushing!
