Starry selfies

Recently, senior actress Jaya Bachchan lost her cool when a fan wanted a selfie with her when she was out for Ganpati darshan.

Jaya Bachchan and Varun Dhawan are recent examples of actors snapping at fans clamouring for selfies. We explore what makes actors lose their patience and cool with fans.

Fans always want a piece of their favourite stars. And often cross the line in their eagerness to click a selfie with them. While celebrities usually indulge fans at public events, they often don't appreciate such intrusions at personal outings like a temple visit, or holiday or simply a lunch.

Recently, senior actress Jaya Bachchan lost her cool when a fan wanted a selfie with her when she was out for Ganpati darshan. "Don't do that, stupid! she snapped. The actress is known to discipline those she finds rude or too intrusive. On the other hand, actor Varun Dhawan, who is known to usually be even-tempered, was upset during a promotional event of Judwaa 2, where people asked for individual selfies with him.

What makes actors lose their patience and snap at fans? "It gets very exasperating when you are out for promotions and every single person wants an individual selfie. After a point of time, it gets very tiring. You can't even sit at a coffee shop peacefully at times without someone unabashedly intruding into your space. It's a Catch-22 situation. It's like paying a price for being popular, rues actress Tannishtha Chatterjee, who feels social media is a big reason why things have got worse for celebrities in present times.

"During our parents' times, stars could only be seen on the big screen. I really liked that idea, she adds.

Television actor Mishal Raheja mentions how fans often tend to ignore the human side of celebrities, and the fact that even celebrities can't always be in the mood to treat fans with patient indulgence. "Some people don't even say hello before taking selfies. We're also as human as they are. We get used to shelving our personal feelings and greeting fans with a happy face. But when we request them to not click any more, they should cooperate rather than pushing for more. I get very agitated when guys start tugging at me for selfies, or ask me to dance with them, says Mishal.

However, some stars enjoy the attention of fans and the paparazzi. Actor Rohan Mehra agrees, "I love when fans come to me for autographs and selfies. I think this is what every actor dreams of when he enters this industry. But it's true that sometimes fans cross their limits and ask actors to pose in a certain way which an actor may not like. People must realise that even actors have their personal life and want to spend time with family and friends without any interference, says Rohan.

Actress Shama Sikander says that fandom is something actors earn, and love from fans is something they always cherish and enjoy. "It is the love from fans that makes us who we are. We all crave for this attention. But when they push physically or want a picture in a pose we don't like, it's like asking for too much. We all have our boundaries and fans cannot expect us to not get upset when those boundaries are crossed, she suggests.

He's the one actor I find too intimidating to meet in person. 😳 What he's saying is right to an extent, but I still feel that he isn't all that patient with his fans even when they're complaisant. He's notoriously moody, therefore I can't imagine a fan pushing him beyond his limit. 😵 I know what I'm saying sounds baffling coming from a devoted fan, but MR doesn't give me an affable vibe when it comes to the equation of his personal space and his ardent admirers. 🤔 In his case, I feel that admiration is best from a distance. 😳

Whatever I have read so far, fans gave good input about him who met him personally.
Reporters, I think, what you wrote is correct. I saw one interview and I didn't like the way he talked with the reporter. But then I don't know the whole story, what triggered him to talk like that.

The thing is (my POV), our hero can't act goody goody, if it doesn't come from heart, the way others do...You have to be true to yourself. I think he will need to learn to be diplomatic or take things sportingly...I guess.

As a fan, I feel one needs to have dignified distance... We are just seeing 1 or 2 minutes moments of their lives based on the post. Not sure how they are in real life..

I respect your point of view, my darling! 🤗 Ami, I recall that interview as well and I wasn't very pleased either. 😕 The media is a separate issue altogether. My particular comment pertained to MR's direct interactions with his fans in his own personal space on his own personal time. I'm sure his fans that have met him on set, a shoot, or any other location professionally have all had good experiences. 😳 I think he's a wonderful person to his loved ones and colleagues, but I'm unsure of his attitude when he's not obliged to be nice to his fans. 🤔 I honestly didn't understand MR's input in this article. How many times does he get harassed for selfies when he steps food outside his flat? How many fans camp outside his apartment complex for eons for one glimpse. How many times has he stopped traffic on the streets? Mishal has been blessed with the rare luxury of fame and freedom to freely move about as per his wish. I think he's very lucky because film stars don't have the same privilege. It seems juvenile for him to be complaining about public attention at this point in his career. 😳

From this angle, you have a point, DAZZ. I understand you completely.
The only thing, I feel is he won't have such input unless he had some bad experience, may be from LTL days... Not sure. Would he give this input just for publicity, I don't think so.

I hope his PR company guides him in proper direction...

I hope so too, Ami! 😊 He's a fantastic actor! All he needs to develop now is some media savvy and his overall interpersonal skills as an entertainer. 😎

Nice discussion here 😊
I agree to some extent what Jaya Bhachan said about seeing/admiring stars only through their work
It's just my POV that it's always better to admire their work from far and with social media if you want convey that in their post etc.
As far Mishal is concerned i think he might have experienced that or just be expressing his opinion being in the same field.thats just my guess ofcourse 😊
