The judge of small things

Judge Anupam Kher lashes out at contestants of Cinestars Ki Khoj for making excuses for their poor performances; calls them names.

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Judge Anupam Kher is not at all amused at the participants of Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj making lame excuses every time they give a poor performance. The veteran actor feels that a sincere performer will perform well, irrespective of the physical state he is in. He says he doesn't buy the stories of falling ill and spraining a leg, which have become regular lore after a bad performance. He says, "I've had contestants coming up to me, saying that long hours of rehearsals have resulted in goof-ups. There seems to be an increasing incidence of participants fainting or sporting an injury. Every time a performance falls flat, the contestants are quick to appeal for votes, explaining their back injury, a sprained hand, leg etc . All I can say is I'm no doctor and this is no hospital."

Livid judge: Anupam Kher
Recently, a contestant Aadil Sharma fainted on stage seconds after a mediocre performance. Aadil's parents went on to the stage and appealed to the audience to give him votes as he performed despite being ill. Kher was not impressed by this gesture. Says Kher, "Does talent need the support of sympathy? It's hard to keep my cool when I see this happening. Why can't they accept that their performance was below average?" Kher has decided to deal with this 'kind of nonsense' firmly. "I've announced that I will take serious action against the contestants who will use the stage to gather sympathy from the audience. I've had enough of their nonsense," he says.

RIZWAN SIKANDAR: Complained of a sprained ankle after a bad performance. Pleaded to the audience to vote for him and promised a better performance in the next round
RITWIKA GOSHAL: She was close to tears after she got negative marks from the judges. She explained that she had high fever and later added that she had a torn ligament
AADIL SHARMA: He said he felt nauseated during a performance and hence fainted, thus appealed for support from the audience
RAHUL MANCHANDA: Pleaded with the audience to excuse his errors as he suffered from a backache

The latest buzz on Zee TV's reality show Cinestars ki khoj is that a serious romance is brewing between Shama Sikandar's brother Rizwan and his co-contestant Mamta Dutta. Insiders from the unit claim the two have been attracted to each other from the start of the show.

They are often seen together, even after they finish their practice. Rumors are that their relationship can take a serious turn. In fact it was one such lover's tiff which had led to Rizwan threatening Mamta with a knife during one practice session. He even startled Mamta by slapping her and in the process shocked everyone present there.
As the practice was going on at his institute, Actor Prepares, Anupam Kher warned Rizwan and threatened disqualification. This is real life, not reel, he was told. (Sampurn)

The name Aditi Sharma might not ring a bell since Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj winner's debut film is yet to release. But after waiting in the wings for more than two years, the newcomer has got her due. She's been signed up for two films under the Mukta Arts banner. Ek Ladki Bholi Bhali Si is a Zee and Mukta Arts co-production that will mark the debut of Aditi and co-winner Sarwar Ahuja.

One hears Subhash Ghai was so impressed with Aditi that he has signed her for an exclusive Mukta Arts Film, Black and White, too. He feels this should be her debut film. "Ek Ladki Bholi Bhali Si is a musical comedy with Basu Chatterjee as director. But Subhashji wants his solo production to release before this one and serve as Aditi's debut film. Work on the project has begun," said a source close to the production house claiming that Ghai might just end up hijacking the Zee contest winner.

While Subhash Ghai was unavailable for comment, Aditi confirmed her upcoming projects. "It has been two years now but Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj has given me a lot. I have Ek Ladki Bholi Bhali Si which stars Moushmi Chatterjee, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik along with myself and Sarwar. I am also working in Subhash Ghai's Black and White and my co-star is a newcomer Anuraag Sinha," she said. When asked to tell us which film she thinks would release first and how she feels about being a Ghai favorite, she was not all that forthcoming. "I cannot say anything more about it now," she said.

'What do they think of themselves?'

Anupam Kher admits that he was miffed with the contestants of Cine Stars Ki Khoj.

In Shanghai shooting for Ang Lee's film, Lust, Caution Anupam Kher admits to being very upset with the Cine Stars... contestants. Says Anupam, "What do they think of themselves? Last week I was very peeved by their laidback attitude. These youngsters know nothing about struggle.

Anupam Kher ko gussa kyon aaya?

They're brought to Mumbai by Zee, put up in five-star comfort. They'd never know what it is to be struggler. I know. I've gone through the grind. When I came to Mumbai from Simla, I got pushed around from one producer's office to another. Even today my fellow-judge Madhur Bhandarkar tells me has 30 aspirants waiting outside his office every day… And then to hear these youngsters with their cushy prospects complaining about their paining backs and squabbling amongst themselves for stupid reasons was too much."

At present, Anupam is having the time of his life in Shanghai. Anupam adds, "Though it's freezing at minus zero degree temperature, I don't feel the cold. The people out here in China are as hospitable as we are backing home. Not for a moment do I feel like an outside. And Ang Lee has put up a massive lavish Hollywood-styled set, the kind we used to see in the films of Cecil de Mille, etc."

Anupam is the only Indian actor in the film, set at the backdrop of the World War 2. He adds, "So I play a normal guy dressed in a suit. That's it!"

Stardoom

Aman Verma made Abhishek Bachchan wait for him for over 40 minutes on the sets of Cinestars Ki Khoj.

Watch out, Aman! Abhishek Bachchan

Aman Verma has been written about often for his high-handed behaviour. But his behaviour during the shoot of an episode of Cinestars Ki Khoj clearly takes the cake. Recently, on the sets of the show, Aman kept actor Abhishek Bachchan waiting for him for a good 40 minutes, while he took his own sweet time to get dressed up.

A source from the production house says, "After the Anupam Kher incident, we wanted to rope in a celebrity judge to ensure a smooth run. When Abhishek Bachchan consented we made arrangements accordingly. We were to start shooting at 2.30 pm. Much to our amazement, Abhishek reached well in advance and got ready on time too. On the contrary, Aman who was supposed to report 30 minutes before Abhishek, came in late. And not just that, he took forever to get ready. He just could not get his costume right. What's worse, he was in no hurry either. He was relaxed and was getting his make-up done with leisurely intervals where he ate pizza and sipped coke. Abhishek had to wait for a good 40 minutes before Aman was ready."

Time and again: Aman Verma

Sanjeev Sharma, executive chairman of Optimystix productions said, "Abhishek is definitely a big star. But Aman is also TV's Peter-O-Toole. We knew that the shooting was held up for quite some time, but that is because of Aman's costume. Apparently, he had some problem with the costume buttons."

How did Abhishek react to the situation? "He is a true professional like his father. He did not express any disapproval," Sanjeev said.

The actor in question, Aman Verma, when contacted said, "As far as I remember, I came before Abhishek did. Moreover, I was shooting for Viraasat from six to 11.30 in the morning. Coming from Lokandwala to Mahalaxmi also takes time. And we always have some or the other problem cropping up on the sets. It's not a big deal."

Abhishek was not available for comment.

Hey Ram!

Across at Zee, it was better that judge Anupam Kher left the show midway in a huff this week. The downright derogatory way in which Kher had been berating the contestants was not funny. His argument that the current generation is getting opportunities too easy, while people like him struggled to make it to the top, is a bit dated. Times are changing, the competition's much stiffer and obviously the talent shows too are a product of the changed circumstances. Why agree to be the judge on one such show and then talk down to the participants, Mr Kher?

During the latest shoot of Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj, contestants Prabhjot and Kanchan were the first to perform. They gave a very good performance and Madhur Bhandarkar and Anupam Kher gave them good scores. Madhur jestingly said even if Kanchan doesn't become an actress, she would definitely end up as a politician. Kanchan More took offence to this and snapped back. She arrogantly said she had only revealed her true feelings through the reality bytes and it was up to the jury how they wanted to take it up.

This made the jury furious and Pooja Bhatt refused to give Kanchan any scores. She also said that if by any chance Kanchan did win the competition, Pooja will never cast her in her production. We tried to get in touch with Kanchan to know her side of the story. Kanchan's mother decided to talk on her behalf and angrily said, "We will not comment on this now."
Hope Kanchan More learns a lesson from this. In showbiz, acting like an angry young woman doesn't help. It's diplomacy that takes them places. Our lady's future in showbiz now seems bleak.
