Indian Idol, the Indian version of the famous international Idol series set the trend for which was followed by Zee Cinestars Ki khoj, Dance Dance, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa challenge 2005 followed by Ek Main aur Ek Tu, L'il champs and Rin Mera star Superstar etc. Reality talent hunt shows are the order of the day. But do reality talent hunt winners end up being as big a name in the industry as the ones who made it without such a platform?

Abhijit Sawant, the first Indian Idol is doing pretty well but the second Indian Idol Sandeep Acharya is nowhere to be seen after the contest that ended almost eight months back. Where are the winners of Ek Main aur Ek Tu — Ujjaini and Aishwarya? They just did a silly music video on the already sung songs of Madhur Bhandarkar's Corporate.

Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj 2 is here, but no one knows what the winners Sharwar Ahuja and Aditi Sharma are doing. Their co-contestants Divyanka Tripathi, Sharad Malhotra, Yuvika Chaudhry, Abbas and Amruta Khanvilkar are happy being telly stars now. Similarly, Indian Idol contestants Rahul Vaidya, Prajakta, Kaurunya and Aditi seem to only make sporadic appearances.

"These people are getting a chance to perform on this platform which itself is a big thing for them. Again they get a chance to meet the most important people of the film industry. For us, it was a long struggle. We even had to beg for work. Ultimately in the end, it's the talent and the marketing which drives them ahead," says choreographer Terrance Lewis and judge of Dance Dance which was aired on Sony more than one and half years ago.

Anu Malik, judge of Indian Idol analyses why Abhijeet has done better than Sandeep. "Who knew Sandeep before? It's only because of Indian idol that he is being talked about right now. So now you know why Abhijeet is a star," he says candidly. Debojit Saha, the winner of Challenge 2005 is doing as good as Abhijit Sawant. But the graph of the progress will be only clear with time. Young Sanchita has no doubt won L'il Champs beating the much younger Sameer and Dwivakar, but whether she lives up to all expectations will be another story altogether.

"Debojit sang in a film for me. Sanchita has got a scholarship and with time she will make a name for herself. Himesh Reshhamiya has signed Vineet, the finalist of Challenge 2005," says Bappi Lahiri, judge of L'il Champs. His co judge Alka Yagnik sums it up better. "All of them can't get their due. Only the best can. And it's ultimately the hardwork, the course of action they take and how well they handle themselves and their career matters. We can just give them their initial boost," she says.

Even if you feel that the singers have done ok, the actors for now are still wannabes. The fist acting pair to emerge out of a reality talent hunt show, Aditi and Sharwar are still to make their debut. But they have not lost hope. They are very proud of their upcoming film with Mukta Arts. "I am doing a film with Mukta Arts. It's tentatively titled Raaste Pyaar Ke. I don't have any regrets with Zee. I mean it's alright, as the project is happening. I think they would start publicising the movie from next month. I have done a Godrej no.1 soap ad. Then I shot a short film with Pankaj Kapoor. Getting a break is a big thing. It's just been two years for me since I came to Mumbai. I have heard stories of people struggling for such a long time," says Aditi.

Sharwar too echoes her opinion. . "Only a couple of songs remain to be shot. There have been a lot of changes in the Zee management after the contest got over. It took time for the new people to start afresh. Besides Raaste Pyaar Ke, I am also doing a film with veteran Basu Bhatacharya, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si, which is a comedy flick. The shooting of the film is almost complete. I am also in starring in Phir Mile Na Mile, directed by Manish Goyal. But Raaste Pyaar Ke would be my first release. I have no complaints against Zee as it bought me to Mumbai and introduced me to the film industry," he says.

Zee TV also thinks that they will hit the right notes with this couple. "The music release is in December while the film would be released in February. In the entertainment industry sometimes it takes time for the project to get started. It may have taken longer than the scheduled time, but at least they have got the right platform to take off from. In the movie business promotion only starts before a few days of the film's release. Once the date comes nearer, you will see them everywhere. It's a strategy. If we talk about them now the impact will be killed during the time of release as you media people get bored very soon," justifies Tarun Meha, Sr Vice President, Marketing, Zee TV.

It's evident that they are still expecting something big. But it does sound like face saving words too. When Mukta Arts' star studded Kisna, Shaadi se Pehle and 36 China Town has failed to get the cash registers actually ringing, so where does this film stand? Also all the other names too sound so very obscure. Sahara too also supposed to launch a film star hunt show but chickened out at the last moment. To make big stars out of wannabes is not so easy and that's how it is. Anyways, will have to wait and watch awhile to get a clear picture on the Sharwar and Aditi story.

:: Anupam Kher ::

A 20-something Anupam Kher did not have to run around trees to win instant fame and adulation. In his 1984 debut movie, Saaransh, Kher played a senior citizen in search of the truth about his son's killers. The film won him the National Award for Best Actor and was India's official entry in the 1985 Academy Awards for Best Foreign language film.

Since then, Kher has flitted from comedy to tragedy to villainy to TV -- and proved to be a master of all genres. From the tragic 'Daddy' to the terrorist Dr Dang in Karma to the father haunted by a secret in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara to the sporting dad in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

Anupam Kher has also hosted TV shows such as Say Na Something To Anupam Uncle and Sawaal Dus Crore Ka. He ventured into directing with Om Jai Jagadish and is also a producer.

Kher has also gone international with Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Bride and Prejudice (2004), his appearance on the hit TV show ER and most recently with The Mistress of Spices (2006).

Kher, a former chairman of the Indian censor board, is an alumnus of National School of Drama (1978 batch) and was its director between 2001 and 2004. He is married to Kiron Kher and has one son, actor Sikander Kher

:: Pooja Bhatt ::

Bollywood's bad girl or India's sweetheart? Actress or Producer or Director? Pooja Bhatt has juggled various roles & rumours with ease ever since she stomped into the film world at 17 with an endearing performance in Daddy. Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, the film showed Pooja giving new life to her lonely and alcoholic father (Anupam Kher).

Next came the superhit 'Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin', where Pooja was perfectly cast as the spoilt daughter of a multi-millionaire who falls in love with a penniless journalist (Aamir Khan).

She won acclaim for performances in Sadak, Tamanna and Zakhm. In 1998, Pooja turned to full-time production with Dushman and Zakhm, dad Mahesh Bhatt's final movie. One of her biggest hits as producer was the Bipasha Basu-John Abraham starrer Jism. Pooja turned director in 2003 with Paap.

Pooja has also dabbled in writing highly-readable Columns and is one of the most quoted celebrities in the country.
:: Madhur Bhandarkar ::

He is the man the Page Three people love to hate. Madhur Bhandarkar's look at the the ugly side of high life won him three national awards and a generation of fans.

Bhandarkar, a former assistant to Ram Gopal Varma, made his directorial debut with Trishakti in 1999. After two years he directed Chandni Bar (2001), a story of a bar dancer, starring Tabu and Atul Kulkarni. Then came Satta (2003) and Aan: Men at Work (2004). Page 3 and Corporate followed -- both hard-hitting, socially relevant films.

Bhandarkar's films stand out for their strong female protagonists -- Tabu in Chandni Bar, Raveena Tandon in Satta, Konkona Sen Sharma in Page 3 and Bipasha Basu in Corporate.

Aman Varma

The big screen and the small screen share one thing in common: They are hard taskmasters. Only a few are able to meet the challenge and make a name for themselves. Actor and anchor Aman Varma is one such person.

Aman came to Mumbai at the age of 25 with nothing more than conviction in himself as an actor, some passing experience in advertisement and degrees in English literature, mass communication and finance.

But hard work soon paid off. After making news in the DD serial Pachpan Khambe Lal Deewarein, he appeared in UTV's Shanti and, finally in the role that made him a household name almost overnight -- the role of Anupam Kapadia in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

Detractors may have tried to write off his success by saying that he just happened to be at the right place at the right time, but he insists that henever took the escalator -- He climbed the stairs like everyone else. Greater fame and name soon came his way. After Kyunki, Aman was approached to do Khulja Sim Sim in 2001. Star Plus wanted him because he could converse fluently in English and Hindi and, needless to say, he had screen presence. The game show went on to run a record 108 episodes, making him a much sought after host.

He went on to host Indian Idol I and II and the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monte Carlo and Portugal.

Rizwan: Pooja don't preach!
By: Vickey Lalwani
December 1, 2006

On my own steam: Rizwan with sister Shama Sikander
Ousted from Idea Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj in the second round last week, TV actor Shama Sikander's brother Rizwan has spent many sleepless nights. Having engaged in a verbal tiff with firebrand judge Pooja Bhatt, the wannabe actor is resentful of the judges decision. While Pooja said he was not up to the mark, Anupam Kher too said that he lacked good expressions.

Sources say Rizwan was heard cribbing backstage during the episode. Rizwan says, "Yes, I was vocal about my emotions. I feel my elimination was an unfair decision. The judges have told me that I have a good personality and carry myself well. I thought I deserved to go into the third round, so did the other contestants. But I've realised that I need to see this as a lesson and move on."

Second chance

According to Pooja, the second chance being given to some contestants is a waste of time. She also feels that Rizwan needed a taste of reality. "We all need to be humbled at some point. And since Rizwan's sister is an actor, he should've had an understanding of the situation. If one can't take criticism, Bollywood is not the place for him/her. We are driving home the point that this is not a beauty contest. Only good looks will not see anybody through."

During the competition, Rizwan enacted a scene from Don where Shah Rukh Khan was surrounded by the police after the Ye Mera Dil song. Rizwan says that his performance far from fell short. "Pooja felt I should have had some expression of fright on my face. In the scene, the police surrounds Don and he has no weapons. But Don is a very smart fellow, so I didn't think he needed to show fright," he explains.

So is Rizwan depending on sister Shama's connections at Optimystix (the same production house that produced Ye Meri Life Hai and now is producing Cinestars Ki Khoj)? Pat comes the reply, "I am not depending on anybody's connections. The judges told me my performance lacked expression and soul. I have worked on that. I believe in hard work. I will bounce back on merit."

Stuff happens

The ever-diplomatic Madhur Bhandarkar, who is the third judge on the show, says, "Pooja had her perspective but Rizwan thought differently. But yes, I think Rizwan needs to improve. It all depends on his performance tomorrow."

Kher will not comment on Rizwan's chances in tomorrow's episode, but says, "These things happen. People who stay in big cities do not take rejection easily."

Rizwan's fate in the competition depends also on public votes, which will come into effect after his histrionics are over tomorrow.

'I am still traumatised'

Back to Section Stories

Ram Kamal Mukherjee

A beautiful life: Pooja Bhatt

Pooja Bhatt met with an accident on her way to Mumbai from Goa, where she had gone to attend the 35th International Film Festival of India yesterday. Soon after being discharged from hospital, she says, "I am still traumatised. It will take me some time to get over it."

Pooja, who has suffered a hairline rib fracture, is still under observation and will have to undergo a few more medical tests at a private clinic. "I can't get over the fact that I met with such a serious accident. I was heading for the airport when a van rammed into my car. I was travelling with a friend, who had come from abroad and thankfully, neither him and nor my driver were hurt. In such a situation they both would have been dead. As for me, I still have to go through after some more tests," she says.

"We were in a Maruti Zen and our car turned over in the middle of the road. The first thing I thought of doing, was to come out of the car. But I was bleeding profusely. I started screaming for help, but no one stopped for us. Probably everyone got scared looking at me, completely smeared in blood. Finally someone was kind enough to stop and take us to the nearest hospital," Pooja says.

Now she is feeling better, but she has been asked to say in bed for a week. "I am feeling better and I am glad that none of us are badly injured," says Pooja.

Ain't never gonna break my stride!
By: Vickey Lalwani
December 4, 2006

BACK TO WORK: Pooja Bhatt
Even though Pooja Bhatt suffered a major car accident in Goa recently, the feisty filmmaker won't let the setback break her stride. Even though she's in pain thanks to the impact on her rib cage, Pooja will be back on sets to shoot for the Idea Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj from today. She spoke to us from Hinduja hospital yesterday.

How did the accident happen?

I think it was destined to happen. Actually, I was supposed to return to Mumbai a day before. But after the disturbances that took place in the city that day (the Dalit rampage), everyone advised me to postpone my return. I guess it was fate.

Can you tell us what happened?

My first reaction when I felt the impact was to turn right and see whether the person beside me was alive or not. The media wrongly reported that I was travelling with three people in the car; it was just a friend and I. He was driving me to the airport when we collided with another car. There was a foreign tourist in the other car, along with her driver. Strangely, both the drivers escaped without major injuries, while the tourist and I were bleeding profusely.

How did your dad Mahesh Bhatt take the news?

When I first got in touch with him, he was shaken up. I have never heard his voice so wobbly with fear. He never believed in miracles, but now he is a changed man.

Are you still in hospital?

Yes, I'm presently in Hinduja hospital. All the required tests have been done and I am feeling much better. I will be discharged Monday morning.

Have you cancelled the shoot for Zee's Cine Stars?

No, I will be back on the sets from today. I have spoken to the doctor and he thinks it won't be a problem. My rib cage felt the blow of the impact so it does get painful when I stand, but I don't have any bandages on my face and have to sit through the entire episode, so there's no stress. In fact, I told the Zee people that if I can't walk up on stage, they'd have to organise a glamourous wheelchair for me (laughs).

You are a brave woman.

Yes I am, and am proud to say that. I think being there for the Cinestars shooting is the best lesson I can give youngsters who want to enter showbiz.

At dagger point

Anupam Kher threatens to kick out Rizwan Sikandar from Cine Stars Ki Khoj after he chased a fellow contestant with a knife

Back to Section Stories

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Rizwan performing in Cine Stars Ki Khoj

His sister Shama Sikandar may have the image of Miss Congeniality on TV, but aspiring actor, Rizwan Sikandar has a long way to go before he comes even close to it.The youngster has already earned quite a reputation for his short temper and his innumerable squabbles. But things came to a head, when the Cine Stars Ki Khoj contestant got into a fight with some other fellow contestants. Apparently, after a heated argument, Rizwan lost his cool and chased a colleague with a knife in his hand. When contacted for his version, Rizwan panicked initially. "Please don't write about this as it could have an adverse effect on my career and also my parents might not like it!"

Later he said that he'd rather get his stand clear. He says, "It was a misunderstanding between me and my fellow colleagues. I'm not denying that I lose my temper at the drop of a hat but trust me, I've cooled down now." But what exactly happened? "Someone in our group passed a nasty remark about me. This happened a couple of times before I lost my cool. I can't handle people ridiculing me. I tried to explain it to them verbally but when it didn't help I picked up a knife from the kitchen and ran after them. The idea was just to scare them and nothing else," he claims. But Rizwan's 'innocent' scare tactics didn't go down well with Anupam Kher, one of the judges on the show. The team of Cine Stars Ki Khoj were rehearsing at Kher's institution where this incident happened. When Kher learnt about this, he was livid. Sources say the veteran actor pulled up Rizwan for his rash behaviour. "We make actors and not goons here" he is said to have told him. As if this wasn't enough Anupam later called Rizwan to his office and warned him that he will be out of the contest and his academy if there is one more complain against him. When contacted, Anupam said, "It was a personal matter between Rizwan and the contestants. My school has an impeccable reputation and I won't allow anyone to tarnish it.

I think the best person to speak with about the fight would be Rizwan. But one thing is sure, that I'll not stand such obnoxious behaviour in the premise of my school henceforth."
What happened? Rizwan got into an argument with a fellow contestant and chased him with a knife in his hand. When pulled up by Anupam Kher, he said that it was a joke between friends.

Where? The incident happened at Anupam Kher's academy in Andheri.

Result: Anupam Kher has warned Rizwan to change his behaviour or he will be thrown out of the show.
