Dhwaja,banner is the identification of gods and warriors in those days. The chariot will have a flag on which the emblem of that particular God or person who rides in that chariot will be painted. Vishnu will have emblem of Garuda on his flag while Siva has the emblem of bull(Nandi) on his flag. Hence Vishnu is Garuda dhwaja Siva is Vrishabha Dhwaja. Arjun is Kapi Dhawaja the ape bannered. Swayam Hanuman resided on his flag in Kurukshetra war.
