This is a really short and sweet and meaningful pair of scenes from the initial episodes of RSR, it is not included in the more widely available HQ dvds of the show so though I optimized the pics to the best of my ability, you can tell they're not all that clear. We just love those editors, don't we 😡 Anyways, the first scene shows Kaikeyi expressing her sadness and worry over the princes being sent for Gurukul so early. She very sweetly wonders what they must be eating, since they probably wouldn't like the fruits and roots available at the ashram very much, and asks Dashrath if she can send them some sweets to perk them up. She then makes him feel a little guilty about separating mothers and children during the most enjoyable phase of their development. We then see a somewhat conflicted Dashrath visit Kaushalya and ask her whether he was really wrong for sending them off, if it made him cold and heartless as Kaikeyi made him feel it did, and she assures him that duty is above all and in fulfilling it, he too was expressing love for the kids - just in a different way.
I LOVE these scenes because the performances of the parents and the interaction between them are so natural and understated and real that you don't even realize how much you're learning from them, it seems so matter-of-fact... and more importantly. the meaning itself. You get such deep insight into the characters in a matter of 5 minutes - Kaikeyi being driven by emotion, Dashrath being susceptible to conflicts between duty and emotion, and Kaushalya having the the purity of heart to experience emotion as well as the wisdom of mind to move forward in spite of it. She manages to give Dashrath strength without undermining Kaikeyi's vulnerability, indicating the importance of both duty and emotion - a message that would become one of the most beautifully presented signature lessons RSji's work offered for many scenes to come (a prominent example being SiyaRam's farewell conversation in Uttar Kand). So... that was my rant, here are the pics, enjoy!
