What is the story with Sonu Nigam and Indian Idol?

I've only followed II3 ... was Sonu a judge before? Why did he leave?

he was the judge with indian idol 1 and 2...and the best judge there ever cud be!!

he left becuz he had his stage shows around the world scheduled during the time of indian idol 3...so he cudnt take part....and he wasnt too happy with the standard of singing...he felt regionalism was given more importance than actual talent..

if he had been a judge on idol 3...imagine how upset he wud have been..

Then I understand your point this way :

He wasn't too happy with falling standard of singing in Indian idol, and his own failure to keep the level high. So, he quit from there with a good excuse of his "world tour" <by the way, how many concerts did he do during the time ?>

By the way, I have never heard from his side that he left II for the issue of regionalism or whatsoever. This opinion must be yours srk. He is probably upset now as he was only a guest judge in indian idol 3. The II3 boys are shining much more than Sonu's lads of II1 and II2. See, Amit already got more than 2 dozens of contracts, Prashant already has album released, Charu, Dipali, Ankita, Amit, Prashant et al are all busy in traveling the world (probably more than Sonu's concert in such a short span of time) for giving concerts here n there.

ahan...we'll see how long these concerts last...

i met him personally in may...to be specific, may 23rd...he had a concert in toronto on may 20th...and he was here till the 23rd...so i met him on the 23rd...and this was supposed to be his last concerts that were scheduled (he had more later on...but they were scheduled later on)..

so obviously...if may 20th was his last scheduled concert...that means the concerts must have started by april or sumthing...no?? i dont remember exactly wen they started....but i can do sum research for u and get the details...if u want them...

and just a reminder: idol 3 started on may 4th...

newayz...there was a mini press conference here in toronto...and there he was asked why he quit indian idol.....thas wen he mentioned about factors other than singing talent and voice quality taking over the show...one being that ppl are voting just becuz a contestant is from their own city (he didnt say the word "regionalism", but wat does voting for a contestants just bcuz they are from ur own city mean??)...and other factors such as trp gimmicks...more preference on x-factor and performances etc etc..

im sorry i dont have any proof for this on print or video...cuz he said it...and i heard it with my ears...if u believe me, den great...if u dont, den thas not my problem...but for sure this isnt just my opinion...i wudnt declare my opinion as his...he said it onli.. 😊

he even mentioned it on the show many times....singing, singing, and onli singing...dont u remember?? he even requested the audience to vote for derserving contestants...not just cuz they are from ur city...vote for the deserving one thinking they are from india....watch the previous seasons and ull see him talking about it....i dont have to provide any links for that...u shud noe about that urself if uve seen the previous seasons....and if u havent....well search it 😊

and his world tour was not an excuse.....he had said he quit the show long b4 idol 3 dates were even announced...wen we found out about idol 3...we already knew sonu isnt gonna be apart of it....it just happened that idol 3 clashed with his world tour...so he said, EVEN IF i WANTED to do it, i wudnt be able to as my world tour wudve clashed with the show...

Interesting.

When Sonu-ji was back as a guest in the 8th Gala, it seemed to me that there was more to it than just issues with tour dates. The way Mini asked "Any mixed feeling about being back?" . . . thats why I started this thread.

I wish I'd watched the show while Sonuji was still a judge. The whole regional thing bothers me too, it should be about the singing and the performance, who cares where they are from?

exactly...

if u havent seen sonuji judge b4....den u shud definately be watching lil champs rite now....ull noe he's all for singing onli.....no other factors...

yeah those are kids...so sumtimes he's nice to them and mentions about their performances and all to encourage them...but his major concern is just singing.....like in 2dai's episode...he said that u ppl (the channel) like to follow the format stuff....and other things....but we are judges here...we onli judge based on singing....(they had to break the format last week, becuz of the channel's mistakes....and the kids had to suffer becuz of that...)....he was pretty upset over it...sonuji and sureshji didnt let the kids suffer and gave them another chance by breaking the format...cuz for him, it doesnt matter wat the channel or show ppl do....the contestants shud just sing and thas it...

and for idol 1 and idol 2...he was totally against dancing performances and regionalism and all this...he mite not have said it directly...but wen he wanted to get his point across....he made sure he did in the nicest way possible...

Sonuji was quite busy with some shows in the US. and his wife was also pregnant at that time.
He states this in a TB article:

Interestingly, while he refused to judge the third season of Indian Idol, he agreed to judge Little Champs. Why? "Three reasons. I refused Idol 3 because my wife was pregnant and I was going to be in the US for some shows, so we decided to have our baby there. Secondly, when you have been part of a show for two seasons, it tends to get a bit monotonous and methodical. The spontaneity is lost. Thirdly, I felt Sa Re Ga Ma which was originally my baby had seen a lot of mind-games of late. The show had become a platform for bickering among the judges, gimmicks, controversies, fights etc. I realized it was reduced to a drama. I wanted to restore the soul and purity of the show, so I approached them to let me be a part of Little Champs. That's why I got someone like Suresh Wadekar to be my co-judge because I think he truly understands music. We both don't have to pretend we are fighting because we genuinely don't fight. We get along very well and we are there only for music", explains Sonu.

Hope this helps 😊

. . . and the interesting just keeps on coming!

I haven't watched any of SaReGaMa or Lil Champs to compare, but there are definitely a lot of fake set ups in Indian Idol . . .
