Sony offends Nepalese community
Indian Idol 3 has stirred yet another controversy in Darjeeling. This time, it is over the portrayal of the Nepalese community.

It all started after the Thursday episode of the contest was telecast. Kolkata Police constable and boy from the hills, Prashant Tamang, enacted a song from the Amitabh Bachchan-Hema Malini starrer Kasauti. Prashant was dressed in a chowkidar costume complete with a Nepali topi with a pair of crossed kukris. And, he crooned the number Hum bolega to bologe ki bolta hai.

Prashant's costume triggered off protests in the community. People have been wearing black bands and black flags, and posters condemning the TV channel have been put up.

"They have degraded the Gurkha community by using the stereotype of a chowkidar. There is widespread resentment in the hills," says Roshan Giri, president of the All Gorkha Students' Union.

The protests have spread to Sikkim and Nepal says Gyanendra Aryal, who had travelled to Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi to drum up support for Prashant.

Even while condemning the TV channel, people are urging others to vote for Prashant. "We have asked people to increase the volume of votes for Prashant. But, as far as Sony Entertainment is concerned, we will not allow them to telecast in Darjeeling if they don't change their perception," says Giri.

According to a senior Gurkha official, "There are writers, poets, film stars, lawyers from our community. There are people who fly to Bangkok to buy a pair of socks. Our boys serve in the armed forces and die fighting for the country.

"Yet, the stereotype of a Gurkha as a durwan seems strong. And such shows only reinforce them."

According to Shola Rajachandran, publicity head of the channel, "It is being misinterpreted. Earlier, two other contestants — Abhishek and Emon — enacted the song from Padosan. Abhishek dressed up as a Tamil in a lungi just as [actor] Mehmood had. It's the same in case of Prashant. The song suited his voice. Moreover, Prashant is one of our favourite boys. Even the judges on the show love him and praise him for his good Hindi and diction. Why would we do anything to malign him?"

But the community is sensitive to such stereotyping.

Not the first time
In May 2007, Kolkata Gorkha Dukkha Niwarak Sammelan served a court notice on Radio One, a Delhi FM radio station.

The notice said: "In a recent programme broadcast by you under the heading Learn New Words with Kapil Dictionary, the words 'night watchman' in the said programme was purportedly translated as: night means raat and watchman means gorkha".

Advocate Anand Bhandari, who served the notice, says, "We sought an unqualified and unconditional apology in writing as well as by broadcasting such apology over the radio with written intimation of such broadcast to me on behalf of my clients within seven days from the date of receipt. If they failed, we said that we would initiate appropriate civil as well as criminal proceedings."

And within seven days the station issued an apology in writing as well as broadcasting.

i know it's not fair for all those ppl being stereotype, all nepalese r not chowkidar and i too strongly believe that this concept should be changed. and why can't they see all the army who r dying in kargil n kashmir after punjabies it's nepalese. u should shalut them and disrespect them. in every other hindi films they call nepalese chowkidar or saab ji. yea it may b in those early days they used to say saab ji but now everything is changed and comparing to now n then we have not only good accent we have better accent then those indians who r in london washing up all those dishes in restaurants.
NO OFFENCE BUT AM REALLY HURT.
