Indian Idol – Sandeep Acharya Performs One Last Time! Sprout

The second part of Antim Yudh (Last War) on Indian Idol concluded with performances by Sandeep Acharya! Sandeep Acharya was under the spotlight as the judges and the audience dissected him for one last time! Ok, I have to start with rants! I will be honest; I have no vested interest in supporting one and not supporting the other! Titles and awards don't make any artiste great – what makes any artiste great is how s/he challenges her/himself! I frankly had a moment last night where I thought why I am bothering myself with all this crap – there is much more to my life than I need to confess! However, I also realized that I was bothering myself because as biased as my words may be to some people, there are others, who wait for them! So I have to thank them sincerely! Right, now we can move on! The show started with Gruesome Twosome – I love this title – Aman Verma and Mini Mathur telling us about N.C. Karunya's performance the night before and informed us that the second night was dedicated to Sandeep Acharya! Aman – Mini introduced the Resident Judges – Sonu Nigam, Farah Khan and Anu Malik! And then introduced the Guest Judge – Arbaaz Khan – Son of Salim Khan, Brother of Salman Khan and Sohail Khan and Husband of Malaika Arora Khan! Oh yes, he is an actor as well – but unappreciated in my opinion! I had a problem here, I think that Javed Saab should have judged both the contestants to be fair – and in my opinion, Karunya got a better deal, because Javed Saab actually knew what he was talking about! Not that Arbaaz is ignorant – but experience rules sometimes! Arbaaz Khan said that he was a great fan of the show and was extremely impressed by Karunya's performance the night before! The Gala-E-Sandeep (as mentioned by Mini Mathur) started with a challenge given by N.C. Karunya! Karunya decided to give Sandeep a peppy number (something Ajay was dying to hear)! "Eena Meena Deeka" is an extremely tough number, because it is an extremely fast number and the words have to come out in fast succession! For a major change – Sandeep Acharya performed rather brilliantly, yes, he was evidently breathless, but I would not hold that against him! Ok, here's the deal, I closed my eyes, because I have this chemical reaction that dictates that I rip my left arm and throw it at the screen, while he performs! Closing my eyes worked, because for once the entire concentration was on singing, and nothing else! I had actually imagined that Sandeep might screw up with this song and I was glad that he did not! The judging started with N.C. Karunya who said that although he gave Sandeep, a ten, he would cut two points because apparently Sandeep and Farah had a moment, which I never really witnessed! Karunya was asked if he could perform the song better than Sandeep, to which he said yes! Now, here's the thing, how can anyone give ten and then say they can perform better? I don't get it! Anu Malik said that he liked the performance! Sonu Nigam said that Karunya gave a tough song and Sandeep managed to sail through effortlessly! Farah Khan said that no one was expecting Sandeep to perform the song so well, not even Karunya! Arbaaz Khan was impressed as well! The Second Theme was Indi-Pop and Sandeep polished an apple by singing Sonu Nigam's "Tu"! Ok, I hated the song – it was a very safe song and I frankly did not care for the song! Sandeep rendered it rather well though, but he definitely was not flawless! Sonu Nigam said that the song was not that simple and that he too had difficulty singing it as there is no breathing space and he demonstrated what he meant! Stating that Sandeep did well! Anu Malik was again impressed and recited poetry! Oy! Farah Khan, the Maestro went crazy again and said Sandeep reminded her of Ricky Martin and I thought to myself that somewhere Curlio's head is exploding! Seriously, Ricky Martin? Give me a break here! Arbaaz Khan was satisfied with the performance and stated that Sandeep was good enough! The Third Theme was Patriotic Song – Sandeep decided to render "Aye Watan"! Ok, he was not good with this one! The dynamism required for patriotism was so missing! I had closed my eyes, so I am not sure if he was smiling, because if he was, it was a bad call! The Judges were apparently waiting for pounce on him as soon as he finished! Farah Khan was like Sandeep was waiting to make people cry and after this song people from all-over India would vote for Sandeep! However, the other judges had an opinion far from Farah's view! Sonu Nigam said that the performance was awful as Sandeep just did not get the essence of the song and at such a stage was unacceptable! Anu Malik also cared very little for this performance and he was vocal about it! Arbaaz Khan gave a weird critique – he said that Sandeep was an imitator and even in Indi-Pop song, Sandeep sounded like he was copying Sonu! Arbaaz Honey, you could have said that during the critique of that song – why didn't you? He furthered that in "Aye Watan" Sandeep blindly aped Rafi Saab and as a layman, he would have loved to see more originality! Before the last theme – Both Competitors sang the title song for a new series called "Aisa Des Hai Mera"! Now, the reason I am mentioning this is because I love the voice of the lady who has rendered this song! Anyone has a clue as to who she is? The Last Theme became Amitabh Bachchan Theme and Sandeep gave a Ho-hum performance of "Khaike Paan Banaras Wala"! I told my gal, "I cannot believe I will have to write about this!" Look, I am in minority and I have a great dislike for this song – it's a personal thing, however, Sandeep sang it the way he always sings most songs! I found the performance boring – if people disagree with me that would be ok! I know at least Californian would agree with me! Sonu Nigam liked the performance Anu Malik liked the performance Farah Khan liked the performance Arbaaz Khan said that the starting was good, middle part was good and ending was good – so it was like a movie – on the whole it might just work well! Or something like that! Ok, I am sorry but I did not pay attention to what the judges actually had to say – so I am giving you a gist of it all – if anyone remembers the exact words, please go ahead and add them! Ok, I also kind of ran through the segments that come after each performance! The First Segment was about Bikaner, again, Sandeep rather nagged about how he was mobbed and could not go home as easily as he would have liked! I am sorry, but am I the only one who thinks that is extremely ungrateful attitude? The Second Segment was about his visit to Indore – same old story! By the way, why did the producers send him to Indore and send Karunya to Kolkata? I don't get it! Oh yes and one segment had Karunya and Sandeep enacting dialogues from old Amitabh Bachchan movies! Karunya with a wig looked ridiculous, seriously guys, stop torturing people like so! Mini – Aman said that apparently hundred million votes were in – that's three hundred million rupees! And Karunya was leading (pause) or was it Sandeep! Everyone is dying to know! Ok, for a second I was scared for Karunya, because such declaration might send Sandeep's fans in an overdrive! Karunya and Sandeep performed a face-off song and it was as forgetful as the Night! They ended the show with the title song of "Hello Brother"! Ok, comparatively, I thought Karunya managed to give us a good performance despite having a bad day! While Sandeep managed to surprise most by doing justice to at least the challenge! At this stage, I came to a conclusion that I really don't care who walks away with the title, because Karunya is a better singer and has a great bright future irrespective of getting the title or not! While Sandeep will have to work really hard after getting the title! I won't say let the best man win, because we all know that the best man is Karunya! I would say that even if Sandeep wins – it would not affect me, because the proof is in the pudding and Karunya can outshine Sandeep even with frail health! Besides, I think Karunya's ill health just might work for him – not against him! 19-year old Karunya is all set to play his version of Hyderabad Blues at the Indian Idol finals on April 22.

"I love the weather, food, Birla mandir, Telugu movies, songs and everything about Hyderabad," says Karunya, who was in his third year at the B Tech Engineering college in Hyderabad when he was selected for Indian Idol 2, the hugely popular reality show.

'Things can go against Karunya'

The aspiring singer claims that he never side-tracked education in favour of his passion for singing. "I have always balanced my singing and studies," he says. "It's always been work and practicing for music."

'Karunya's been a find, like Abhijeet'

Though the finals are only a couple days away, the young singer claims he doesn't feel nervous. "There is no time to even breathe! We start our day rehearsing, and end it rehearsing. We practice the whole day. Before, it was only about five hours of practice before the show. Now, we sing the whole day. But the best part of this is we love what we do, and we're getting famous while we're at it! I think I will feel the tension only on the final day. I might even get giddy with all the excitement and nervousness then, but I'm pretty cool now. I'm just thinking about the performance."

On Saturday, Karunya will compete with Sandeep for the coveted title. What songs does he hope will do the trick? "I will sing Whimposh mal from Mission Kashmir, Sayonee from the album Junoon, Badan pe sitare from Prince, Ek mein aur ek tu hai from Bluffmaster and One love from Rakht," Karunya says.

He adds, "One love and Sayonee are my favourites. I wanted to sing Sayonee during earlier episodes, but didn't get a chance to. I hope it brings me good fortune!"

Who will be the next Indian Idol?

But though Karunya is the nation's favourite to win the title, luck isn't favouring him at the moment. He is presently suffering from a throat infection and cannot stop coughing. "I had the infection during the shooting of the last episode as well. I managed to sing with that. My lymph nodes are swollen. I hope it gets better for D-day."

Karunya believes he is the luckiest contestant amongst all who have ever featured on Indian Idol. "The comments and applause I got from the judges and audience; the favoritism from the judges has never been seen before. It's phenomenal! I will never forget these moments ever. My favourite co-contestant was Minal Jain. We would get up at 2 am and heat pizzas in the oven. Due to hectic schedules, we had irregular eating habits. I can't forget those days..."

Who do you think the next Indian Idol will be?

According to me, Karunya is the better singer. But luck favours the brave and I find Sandeep very brave. He has a charming personality. Things can go against Karunya because of his confidence. I still feel Amey Date had a chance. Audiences are the deciding power though. They should select a proper candidate, as they have to live with the Indian Idol.

When Indian Idol 2 started, I believed we would have a female idol this time. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and it is really funny. Women are ruling in every sector, so why not in music? It's all about the audience. How can Monali, Meenal, Neha or Antara not get astounding votes? Strangely, somewhere down the line, we still feel boys should be given first preference.

Do you think too many winners from contests will flood the market?

There is always room for talent. Talent sticks out like a sore thumb. India is a huge country with so much talent. We Indians have one problem though. Something suddenly excites us, and then we suddenly lose interest. Reality shows give you instant fame. Otherwise who knew Karunya, Abhijeet Sawant or Rahul Vaidya? When we were struggling to come up in life, we knocked at the doors of producers for months. We had to plead to them to listen to us. If we have new talent coming in, existing talent too will be on their toes. I look at it positively.

But isn't it bad to offer everything on a platter?

Finally, if you give something on a platter, they have to retain it too. If they get it on a platter, it doesn't mean they will be stars forever. I have been working for more then 25 years. Still, on the day of an audio release, I get nervous. The media decides who is good and who is bad. People go against the media, but I am very happy. I feel it is one of the best watchdogs of society today. When the media criticises me, it helps me work harder.

Is there any change in musical trends at the moment? Movies seem to have changed drastically.

Things have changed, music formation has changed and ideas have changed. We can't compare this generation to earlier ones. Change is necessary. Things are very progressive now. We are in a renaissance period -- the most creative phase. Look at technology and sound production -- it has changed drastically. Therefore, we have remixes, but they should be done aesthetically. In fact, every composer and singer is trying to be different. When I look at my own music -- whether it is Soni Mahiwal, Baazigar or my music today -- haven't I grown? In the 1980s, we had four tracks. Now, we have 400! World music has arrived at our doorstep. My own music was taken for Moulin Rouge.

What is the success mantra for a song?

As far as I am concerned, the success of a song depends on various factors like melody, sound, good actors and some luck. But it is teamwork. Sometimes, good songs are not heard. At other times, you don't expect much from a song but it becomes a hit. For example, Asoka had good tracks but it didn't click. However, for me it was my best work. Songs from Judwa were funny, but I didn't consider them big hits.

How different is your music for Humko Deewana Kar Gaye?

It is very different. Bhula denge tumko sanam is my favourite. Rock star, For your eyes only and the title track have also been appreciated. But Fanah is becoming very popular too.

In the past, you had two music composers working on the same film. So why were you upset about Humko Deewana Kar Gaye?

What has happened in the past is over. This is the new Anu Malik. Now I will do all the songs. In the past, I didn't have contracts and people may have taken advantage of that. If somebody does something behind my back, I cannot do anything about it. But today, I have contracts and people cannot take advantage of me. I don't think two composers are necessary for any movie. It may be good for the film, but not for me. I have got a 25-year brand name. I don't want anyone to piggy bank on it. I have created music alone, unlike Shanker-Jaikishan or Anand-Milind. I always wanted to be known as Anu Malik. Why should I change? If anyone wants Anu Malik, they should sign a contract. I have no fights with any composer. Anyone will trample on you if you are not strong enough.

Why do you think so many music directors are singing today?

Everyone should sing. Even S D Burman and Panchamda sang beautifully. It does not affect the music. I have sung innumerable hit songs too. I do not think I would like to sing all my songs though. I understand the script and the situation, and if there is something that suits my voice, I request the director and sing it. I don't insist on singing. I need talented and professional singers.

You were the one who started the trend of albums by music directors. Now, many appear to be doing it.

People want to be seen more, that is the only reason composers are singing for albums. I don't blame the composers for singing. If they have a decent voice and want to sing and do shows, why not?

I have Pyare Mohan, Rockin, Umrao Jaan, Love Story 2050 and Maa Santoshi Maa lined up.

Amey Date answers, When it was declared that I am out, for two minutes I was little shocked and blank. After that I was back to my normal thoughts. Judges and audience were asking for rematch. I was pretty cool at that time and I decided not to sing for the rematch.

Amey Date answers, What should I answer to this. It was a spontaneous reaction from the judges and it showed that they love me so much. But offcourse I feel very sad for Anuj. It was not his fault that he was in and I was out.

Mini and Farah on Indian Idol 2

There is so much fun, enjoyment, gossips and comments behind the Indian Idol's stage. Recently Farah Khan depicted the secrets about the chemistry between Mini Mathur and Aman Verma commenting that this jodi had resemblance to Hema Malini and Dharmendra. Since Anu Malik's poetic lines on the show are being liked hugely, Farah says that when Anu begins to recite his shayari she and Mini keep exchanging quick glances and giggles in between the shoot.

Mini confesses that her chemistry with the co-host Aman is good on stage. And she also said that Aman is a thorough professional and initially she did not know him but gradually they became friendly to each other. Since Rakhshanda is her good friend, Mini tells that "She feels nice when she shares her make up van with Rakhshanda other than anyone else."

Mini and Farah are of the view that Sonu Nigam is the best mimic of the country. "Sonu and I share lots of things behind the camera, our take on contestants, on Anu Malik and his comments on the Bottom Three. We sometimes even make fun of the contestants who are really bad," Mini chimes in enthusiastically

Meenal Jain tours with Sonu

Meenal Jain Meenal Jain, one of the finalists of Sony's Indian Idol 2, is now ready to embark on a tour with Sonu Niigaam to London. Jain is scheduled to perform with Sonu around May 12, at the Royal Albert Hall. Cover versions "I am really excited about performing with Sonuji, that too at the Albert Hall. It's a very prestigious thing for me," she says. Jain reveals she will be singing her signature number, Lambi judaai, along with a medley of other songs. After Indian Idol, Meenal has been busy trying her voice at playback singing. "I recently sang a portion of the title track for Ram Gopal Verma's new film, Go. It's also being dubbed in Tamil and Telugu." Meenal says she was happy with the Idol results, though she hoped Karunya would win. "I like them both. Sandeep has an amazing quality to his voice, that will take him places. Karunya, on the other hand, is a very dear friend."

Indian Idol - Indians Can't Vote! Neha Leaves!!! Sprout 2006-02-01 02:50:23 Ok! I am officially pissed off! I don't get what the Indian audience hears! I am sorry but I don't think Indians who watch and vote for Indian Idol can be called sound judges! In fact I would love to know what in God's name do they think before voting! I mean how can the best singers go to bottom three, while the worst pack survives? I was going to report on Indian Idol Performance Night, but then I thought that not many might care to read who sang what! Besides I don't really know all the songs to make a sound judgement! However, I do know a good rendition when I hear one! I have decided to launch two 'Save the Contestant' drives! I think the net friendly Indians can read this and go in an overdrive to save two great contestants! They deserve to be on top! Honestly! I will take you to performance night for a quick summary! The show started with Sandeep Acharya! He sang an overheard song and frankly I think he is an imitator and his voice reminds me of Udit Narayan, one of the playback singers of Hindi movies! Obviously Sandeep chose an Udit Narayan song! I was so under-whelmed that I pressed the mute button after listening to first stanza! Obviously I did not miss much because the judges also did not think much about his performance and on result night he was coined to be a part of Bottom Three contestants by the judges! He survived bottom three though! After Sandeep, Neha Kakkar took the stage and she sang this peppy number which was unfortunate because it was nothing new and I think most know that she could handle such songs without any problems and as one of the judges Sonu Nigam pointed out she could do much better! Neha has a fantastic voice! She has the voice that would shine in traditional Indian folk genre! Obviously the performance was very simple and I knew that Neha might land in Bottom Three and I was right! Amey Date is a favourite with most of the net surfing folks! Amey has a fantastic voice and his slow rendition of a ballad was fantastic! My gal went into an overdrive voting for him because he lands in danger zone almost always and I still have not figured out why! I mean he looks good so his looks can't be the problem! He sounds great so his voice can't be the problem either! So what is wrong with Indian voters? Amey landed in bottom three and the popular vote was Indians should not vote! Sorry! I am launching a Save Amey Drive and I want people to participate because Amey is a great singer and he is Top Two material!!! Meenal Jain – I love this gal! Seriously! She has this amazing voice! Her voice shines in songs that need belting out and belting out in tune is a feat! I personally loved her performance of Lambi Judaai, a song made immortal by Pakistani folk diva Reshma! Meenal's performance was the best in my opinion and frankly when she landed in bottom three I was not just pissed off – I was like I don't want to see this show! Seriously if less than perfect is Indian Idol Mantra, what's the point of having such a show? I am launching Save Meenal Drive! Please don't fail her! She has a bright future! Ravi Tripathi! You know something – this guy was the one to leave! It was a horrid performance! I mean please he sang one of my favourite songs and I was like Jesus what is he doing? I am sorry the guy is not that great and he needs a lot of practice to remain in this game! I was not impressed with him and I felt rather distraught when he did not even make it to bottom three! Hello! He deserved to go!!! Don't give sympathy votes! This is a show about finding a true talent and when compared Ravi just is mediocre and that's the fact! Sorry, I don't think sympathy should play any part in such shows! Antara Mitra – Ok, she is a darling of the audiences! I like her as well and I frankly coined her as the idol! However! Her last two performances were nothing to report home about! So she needs to get back on track and sing what she believes otherwise I think she will not be the right choice! Sorry Antara game is on… Panna Gill – He is a good entertainer and I know why he survives! The teen gals have a crush on him apparently! As long as he can sing in tune I have no qualms! He was not a bottom three material so I am fine with the fact that he survived! Monali Thakur – Like Antara, this sweet gal is a crowd favourite and after having some voice trouble last week, she came back with a bang and she was wearing a saree and looking darn cute and sweet! Loved her performance! Loved her look and glad that she remained safe but then she always is! Saving the best for last! NC Karunya! Karunya is a South-Indian bloke who sings brilliantly in Punjabi! His rendition of the popular song from Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding – a great film might I add was just awesome! Yes I agree with him that his performance was the best! Way to go! After landing in bottom three in the last gala, this guy came back and conquered them all! So the result shows nights are always disturbing and as I already mentioned Amey, Meenal and Neha landed in bottom three! Neha was expected and the other two were on wrong list! Thankfully the blow was not as severe because Meenal was sent back first and Amey stated that since Neha was like a younger sister, he would prefer to leave the competition than see Neha go! However, Amey survived as you all obviously figured it out! But Amey was crying with passion when he was told that Neha is out and he survived! Amey, I love your passion and more so your mom, she is darn sweet lady and frankly my gal and I always are tenser about her than you, if that makes any sense whatsoever! Neha sweetheart! You are just 17 and the future for you is darn bright! The plus is your elder sister also was a product of Reality Television Contest and she was NOT selected and now she has a fantastic career – so I am very certain that you like your sister Sonu Kakkar would be heard by Indians soon! I wish you all the best! The greatest highlight of result night was the inclusion of Anuj Sharma who replaced Jolly Das who is still down with Chicken Pox! Sorry Jolly! Now the great thing about Anuj is he is cute, he sings very well and he is taken, which makes him even hotter! Ok, so that's my gal's take but I sincerely like the guy, so I was glad to see him back, although I think Farah Khan was kind of mean when she delivered the news! But as long as he is selected, I will not hold that against Farah! So now here's the deal! The net savvy Indians need to wake up and participate in Save Amey campaign and Save Meenal campaign because if we don't wake up, these great singers just might leave and frankly I would not continue reporting on a talent contest where talent is ignored! It is the carnival, which has got the eyes of the entire nation fixed on the TV screens. The viewers are found biting their nails in anxiety. And when their favourite contestant gets good comments from the judges and handsome amount of votes from the nation, they simply jump on their seats with enjoyment. Out of the very long list of 30, 000 singers, now only Top 06 finalists are left. They are the lucky and exceptionally talented vocalists of the series who have touched the heights of the show. And as it is obvious, only one amongst them will be the Indian Idol of the nation, nonetheless they all have become the celebrities. Even to some, Anu Malik has promised to give songs to sing in movies. The nation now has given its decision for this week. And out of the top 6, Meenal Jain was voted out and she had to leave the show. Once again, the nation did the same thing and sent the real talent out of the program. Antara Mitra (whom Anu Malik has confirmed to give a song to sing in a movie) was called first in Bottom three. Then Meenal Jain was called followed by N C Karunya. These three were called the best singers of Indian Idol's bunch but unfortunately they got the wobbly position. And finally the result was announced and Meenal was voted out of the show despite the fact she was the best performer of Indian Idol 2. The nation once again made a big mistake. "I promise to make Meenal do playback singing for me", Anu Malik promised to her being really upset with the decision. Sad Meenal reassured her fans and judges, "I promise to be back with a bang". Farah was looking upset for her criticism on Meenal for her past performances and said, "I am now feeling guilty as to why was I critical of her performances. I gave those criticisms with clear intentions of improving her but I guess the viewers took it in the wrong sense. She was one of my favourite finalists".
