Saleem-Suleimaan on Indian Idol

The Indian Idol 2 stage has never looked so gorgeous and stunning!! The stage's set with red, white and pink flowers; red and pink ribbons floated everywhere on the stage and the best part was tha the top five looked stunning in their traditional attires as they performed for the wedding special episode.

The top five with the music director duo!
Music director duo, Saleem-Suleimaan, who have worked on films like, Kaal and Neal 'n' Nikki will be the celebrity judges on the show this week.

"I had heard praises about the show and the contestants…and so I had really wanted to visit this stage and the performers who rock the stage to experience it myself…and such a platform is always very useful for composers like us who are forever on the look out for fresh talent!" commented Saleem.

"Being the only girl left in the race now, I quite fear a vote out…well known music directors like Saleem-Suleimaan give us the hope that our music career might just not end with this stage…this exposure helps us a lot in establishing our name in the industry even if we don't win the title!" commented the pretty Antara.

Shocking! India says no to female 'Idols'

Happy Women's Day, India! On the eve of International Women's Day, India voted out the only girl contestant on the show. Antara Mitra, much to the shock and dismay of the judges as well as her fans exited the show after she was judged on the popular Sridevi song from the 90s, 'Mere hathon mein nau nau' in the wedding celebrations round.

The case however is totally different on the other side of the world. Americans are favouring women 'Idols' and how! Out of the four seasons so far, three winners have been women. This year too, in the fifth season, some of the favourites in the show are women. Other countries as U.K, Indonesia and even the Arabs have had a female Idol in the first series itself.

The top 5 contestants sang 'Sapnay mein milti hai o kudi meri' but unlike the song the only 'kudi' on the show went back without becoming the dream girl of 'Indian Idol'. Antara, along with the others was criticized by the judges especially Sonu Nigam. In this round even Amey Date who usually gets praise from the judges was criticized by them. Karunya was the only contestant who got good remarks from all of them.

The stage was set with red, white and pink flowers and the contestants looked stunning in their traditional attire. Antara feeling the pulse of the nation had said before her elimination, "Being the only girl left in the race now, I quite fear a vote out...". Antara got loud cheers of applause from the live audience and the hosts of the show, Aman Verma and Mini Mathur when she said that she didn't want votes on the pretext that she is the only female contestant left on the show

The results were devastating for the audience as well as the judges who had always believed in Antara and the fact that she had the perfect voice for playback singing. Farah Khan had felt that her makeover had been brilliant bringing about a positive change in her personality. While all the judges felt that Anuj or Sandeep should have been voted out, they were quite shocked when Anuj was declared safe. Anu Malik couldn't bear his disappointment and walked up to Antara and declared that she will sing for him.

'Indian Idol' judge, Sonu Nigam lashed out at the voting public accusing them of regional bias. "We made the same mistake a long time back when British ruled us. We cared only about our region or state. Why do people forget that they are Indians first and then, Bengalis or Himachalis or Marathis," said an exasperated Sonu.

The nation voted out Antara Mitra

By: Goher Iqbal Punn
Friday, March 10, 2006

The nation continues to shock once again with its decision to eliminate one more finalist in final rounds of Indian Idol 2. This time around the needle went to the only female finalist Antara Mitra. She was voted out of the show. The highly talented and judges hot favourite Antara left the show with tears in eyes. Now the show will move on next week with Top 4 finalists - Amey, Karunya, Sandeep and Anuj.

As per all the judges she has the perfect playback singing voice and talent to make mark in the world of singing but the nation wants something else. At least one thing is clear from the results so far that the nation is anti-female. Judges felt that Anuj and Sandeep should have been voted out since they had not performed well. But when it was announced that they were safe, the judges were shocked to hear the result.

Farah was of the view that Antaras makeover had brought her positive changes. "It is true that I know regret our decision of getting back Anuj...he hasn't shown the kind of talent that we expected out of him...we should have considered better options," regretful Sonu expressed.

Anu Malik could not believe that his hot favourite Antara was voted out of the program. He went up on the stage and promised her to give songs in films. Antara, who was shattered with being voted out, said that she had learnt a lot on this platform. "This stage has given me so much, glamour, recognition. I am upset about being voted out but I am quite content with the Indian Idol stage! Though out of Indian Idol...I am not going back to my village, I am going to stick on here in Mumbai and make my name in the music industry," tearful yet confident Antara said.

The last girl voted out of Idol

ANTARA MITRA the only girl remaining on Indian Idol 2 was voted out on Tuesday night amidst high drama. And now only four Idols are left running for the coveted title. In the last gala the five finalists Amey, Antara, Karunya, Sandeep and Anuj performed on the Idol stage draped in red, white and gold for the shaadi special and tried to earn maximum audience votes to ensure their place in the next round.

The results showed that Antara and Sandeep had received the least number of viewer votes and one of the contest's best perfor mers, Antara, was voted out. Antara's story was like no one else's on the show and pulled at the heartstrings of many of her fans. The simple girl from Maslandpur village in West Bengal made her way through the competition beating other competitors from different cities. Her makeover stunned audiences as she transformed into a chic metro-girl, brimming with confidence and with a melodious voice. With Antara out, the last girl on Indian Idol leaves the stage for the remaining four guys to slug it out for the title.

Last woman standing

Antara Mitra is the only girl finalist in Indian Idol 2, and she is super nervous about that, as she says, "There are four guys against me, so there's a lot of pressure on me to perform well because everyone wants the Indian Idol to be a girl this time. Till Meenal (Jain) was here, I could share with her a lot of things that I can't be comfortable talking about to guys." But all the nervousness apart, Antara has found a good support in music director Bappi Lahiri, who is very impressed with her crooning skills. So, Antara had a meeting with him, and Bappi told her that he has been following her performances. Not only that, Bappi has also decided to give her a chance to sing in his film, like he did with Rahul Vaidya and Amit Sana. "I was so thrilled to hear this, especially since he is such a big name in the industry," gushes Antara.

"I fear for Karunya"

She was the final chance for Anu Malik's prophecy to come true on Indian Idol II! Antara Mitra's elimination from Idol not only put an end to her own deam run, but it also laid to rest Malik's hope of a girl Idol this time round. But the lady from an obscure village in the outskirts of West Bengal, hasn't given up hope, she'll soon be in Mumbai to pursue her career in music.

Antara Mitra: Mumbai bound!
Ananya Sengupta spoke to Antara, who's now in her hometown, relaxing and taking time out to gather her energies to take on the fast life of Mumbai after she returns.

How do you feel now that you are back in your usual lifestyle?
I am missing all those things that I would previously be embarassed about on Indian Idol. Like when the camera followed us around! I miss all the attention, really!

Did you feel let down when you were voted out?
The worst thing was that I let a lot of people down. Specially, Anuji! He had said that a girl will be the Indian Idol this time! And at that point of time, I was the only girl around!

So who do you think will be the Idol this time?
Nothing can be said! I am really at a loss of words! In the last version, there was still some hope, but this time...really all the good singers have been voted out! Now, I fear for Karunya!

Antara practising with other contestants

How was the response back home?
It was great! The media has been great to me and not only my parents but my neighbours are proud of me as well!

Are you doing any stage shows now?
No, I am not doing anything at the moment because I don't know where my contract with Sony stands. I am coming down to Mumbai and then I'll decide.

Are you in touch with any of your fellow contestants?
I am in touch with most of them. Karu (Karunya) calls too. Monali calls too, but now she's busy jetsetting between Kolkata and Mumbai!

What happened to the offer made to you by Anu Malik?
It's still to happen. I have to wait for as good banner and a really great song!

Bengali girl in Idol chase

n It's official — if the second Indian Idol is a girl, she is going to be a Bengali, Antara Mitra. With Meenal Jain being voted out in last Tuesday's episode, the girl who hails from a small village on the Indo-Bangladesh border is now left with four male competitors in the final race to the title.

Among other things, Antara met up with Bappi Lahiri to take expert advice on how to approach the remaining few weeks of the show. The Dada of Disco was very impressed with the Bengali girl and tipped her to win the title.

"She has all that it takes to be a good playback singer," Bappi told Metro. "If so much money is being spent on a show like Indian Idol, we should expect at least one good addition to the music industry from here. I have already worked with Amit Sana and want to work with Abhijeet Sawant. They are the future of Indian music."

Also, for the first time in the history of Indian Idol , Antara along with the other finalists has composed the title track of Indian Idol Takaa Tak, the "insider's look" show on SAB TV.

The song's turned out so well that the show judges are really impressed. "I was deeply touched when I saw the final output," says Anu Malik. "I truly appreciate the amount of hard work and dedication which they underwent to create this magic."

Preity inspiring
Screen On & Off
Judgment girl: Preity Zinta

From appearing at derby competitions to innovating new colours for bikes, Preity Zinta has been making most of her non-shooting phase. Last Saturday she came to the Indian Idol sets in Mumbai as the chief guest of the popular talent hunt show.

And after her judging stint for the Sony show Preity sounded very excited. "I am so happy to have come to Indian Idol, these performances were mind-bowling," said the Salaam Namaste lady.

Preity was particularly impressed with two performances — N. Karunya and Calcutta's Antara Mitra. As Karunya sang, Preity couldn't help but tap her feet and confess: "It is very difficult to judge and give pointers to such talented singers." For Antara, she said: "Wish you could sing playback for me some day."

On the film front, Preity is set to appear in two big movies this year and both of them are set in New York. While Sajid Nadiadwala's Jaaneman, directed by Sirish Kunder, will have her opposite Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan, Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna has Preity alongside the likes of Abhishek Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.
