Monday, May 29, 2006 (New Delhi):

Anti-reservation student activists held more protests on Monday after rejecting a compromise proposal from the Central government.

Protests are underway in Delhi and parts of north India for the past 17 days against quotas for members listed in Other Backward Communities.

Students of Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University have started an indefinite relay hunger strike and they would be joined by students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi on Tuesday.

The faculty of Maulana Azad Medical college also staged a strike and are not attending OPD services.

Doctors at the University College of Medical Sciences went on mass casual leave for a day.

Hunger strike

The student of IIT, Kanpur continued their relay hunger strike on Monday.

The faculty at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Delhi have planned a 24-hour hunger strike on Tuesday.

They will keep working but will not eat as a mark their protest.

On Wednesday there will be a complete medical shutdown in Delhi. All outpatient departments will be closed but emergency and casualty services will operate.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra's Public Welfare Department Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, on Tuesday, led a demonstration here in favour of reservations for backward classes even as the rest of the country saw protests against the quotas.

The rally was organised by Bhujbal, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) that is a part of the Congress-led coalition government in the state.

"The reservations include 80 percent of the nation. Those striking against reservations form a minuscule part," Bhujbal said.

Meanwhile, around 5,000 people, including doctors from some of the city's leading hospitals, engineers and Bhujbal's supporters, participated in a demonstration against reservations at the sprawling Azad Maidan in south Mumbai.

The anti-reservation stir reached Mumbai Saturday with police using force against medical students protesting proposed reservations for the backward classes.

On April 5, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh had declared that the government was planning to reserve 27 percent of seats in central universities and other higher educational institutions for other backward classes.

If the government implements its plan, the reservations in these institutions will go up to 49.5 percent. Currently there is 22.5 percent reservation in all government institutions for the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

Maharashtra minister to lead pro-quota protests

Mumbai: Battle-lines between pro and anti- quota supporters have been drawn in Maharashtra with state PWD minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal scheduled to lead a pro-reservation demonstration here today.

Yesterday, RPI activists had organised a pro-quota demonstration at the Maidan, a few metres from the spot where doctors and medical students had held a anti-quota dharna.

Hundreds of pro-quota activists and members of thev Mahatma Phule Samta Parishad, the outfit for OBCs floated by Bhujbal, have gathered at the Azad Maidan and awaiting his arrival.

The Parishad activists are planning to take out a morcha from the Maidan to the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar statue at Cooperage near Mantralaya in south Mumbai, a Parishad office-bearer told PTI.

While supporting the reservations, Bhujbal yesterday had criticised the anti-quota protestors and those condemning police cane-charge on them.

"Maharashtra has seen several social movements wherein people have sacrificed their lives for just causes. The overwhelming populace in the state is in favour of reservations", he said.

Bhujbal had recently organised an all-India rally of OBCs at Delhi, which was attended by prominent leaders of various political parties.

Medicos in Kashmir join countrywide anti-quota protests

Srinagar: Medicos in Kashmir Valley today joined anti-reservation protests demanding the scrapping of Union HRD Ministry's proposal to increase quotas in institutions of higher learning saying it would lead to brain drain in the country.

Hundreds of medical students gathered near the government medical college premises here and shouted slogans against Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh and the porposed reservation.

"The 50 per cent reservation is 100 per cent politics and it would lead to a brain drain among the doctors," a protesting medico told reporters here.

He said the main aim of the protest was to express solidarity with their colleagues all over the country who have been mercilessly thrashed by police during peaceful demonstrations.

He said the protest was alo aimed at highlighting the plight of government medical college here where the "standards have been falling by the day".

The protesting medicos also demanded scrapping of the proposals which would provide reservation to students from backward classes.

"Once we enter the medical college, we get same facilities and education, then why should the students belonging to categories get further reservations?" they asked.
