Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam have said repeatedly that a good artist is the one who can sing all types of song?
Do you agree with this?

I don't. Reason, look at Nusrat fateh Ali Khan Saheb. Imagine him singing "Kuch na Kaho". Or imagine Jagjit Singh singing "Aaj Mere yaar ki Shaadi hai" or Adnan Sami singing "Pretty Woman". Does that mean that they all are not great artist. Of course not. Just mean that there are some songs that are suited to a particular artist and he is best at them.

What India need is a unique voice not "jack of all trade" voice. For that there are many "Babul Supriyo"s and "Sudesh Bhonsle"s waiting in line

No, I don't agree with Sonu Nigam and Anu Malik entirely. At the same time, the voice of India should be a unique voice, not a carbon copy of a popular singer. Also, we don't know what they mean by all types of songs. Its kind of vague but I guess it means singing everything from classical to rap.

Actually its another reason to not trust judges. Do you remember Lekha, she had such a "hat ke" voice. But judges at the time were of the opinion that her voice has limited scope. I think she was one of the most accomplished singer.

Brilliant!!!!! I appreciate versatility, but being extremely good in one genre is better that being okay in all types of songs..moreover,versatility should not mean having no original style..

I actually get irritated with Sonu, who is such an accomplished singer, sometimes when he tries to do too much gimmicks with voice change and all that.. nothing should distract the listener from the soul of the song to other gimmicks.. thst's just my preference as a listener..

But can we blame jsut the judges? If so-so contestant sings only one type of song, people will start blaming that contestant for sticking to only one type of song or style. What then? Part of the public thinks that way too, IMO. I first value originality and then some versatility...

I also liked Lekha...she did have a different voice, a bit more husky than most female singers. It seems like the judges prefer conventional talent...

Versality means singing all types of songs that suits you. I am sure Ravi was forced to sing "Pretty Woman" because he never looked comfortable doing that.

And think about Usha Uthup. Her voice is different (may be limited scope) but can anyone doubt her singing capabilities?

good point! sad but true.. public wants one singer to sing 'all types of songs'..though I am not quite sure what that means..but may be judges should encourage original singing styles rather that encouraging everybody to fit into the stereotype..it may not influence public opinion, but more importantly these judges are big people in the music industry.. if they only look for convetinal talents then it just strengthens the stereotype..

ya u r a bit right, but look the most femous singers like Kishore Kumar, Asha Voshle, Md Rafiq sahab, Manna Dey they r versetile, they can sing any kind of song. and versetility is an extra tallent in a singer which is very rare, Nusrat sahab is the master in his field but we will also get bore if we daily listen Nusrat sahab's songs, but we will never get bored with Kishore Kumar cz he is versetile. tht is the difference.... and i think Amey is very versetile and Antara too...
