Versatility is also needed, but it isnt the most important factor! what I feel is whatever a singer does, he/she should do it with complete "Perfection", that is what makes you a Great singer!

well i agree..for me versatility is a very important thing..for tht esp asha bhonsle is the best...whether classical songs like piya banwri or cabaret or pure romance or pop and hip hop...she does all wid equal ease..it gives a diff level of respect for the control of her voice..
in today's singers i think its shreya ghoshal who does this..she can sing whatever u can thnk of..shankar mahadevan too,and of course sonu nigam..

It depends.
Because I think its wonderful to be a specialist in a certain genre and sing brilliantly in tat particular way. Rather than singing ok-good for all different genres.

IF you want to survive in the industry or in the singing show like this, I guess u've got to be versatile.

Agreed with xobile!

But also I would like to add, that IF a singer is versatile then it is an amazing accomplishment. Not everyone can be versatile. But yes, people have different voices which suit different kinds of genre. So versatility is not a must in terms of singing. BUT in terms of expression, one has to be versatile, to easily adopt the mood of the song.

For me, the perfect versatile singer is Sonu Niigaam, he can sing almost all genres. He has not reached this stage easily, that is why he is so much appreciated by everyone. It is really a commendable job to be versatile.

And also, I agree that singing can be done through sheer talent and hard work even without classical training. It is my personal experience of singing through which I have gathered that the more you practice singing, the more your voice gets stable and sur gets perfect. It only requires dedication and a love for music, nothing else.

Thanks for a good topic.

I love reading all the responses you all have. And I agree completely with most of them. My personal feeling is that versatility is very beneficial to a singer! It helps a singer grow! Just my two cents on versatility. Would love to hear what more people have to say on this! =]

ok..i wouldnt really expect Swaroop to suddenly break out into a hardcore rock and jam sequence,he is best with folk and semi classical numbers...similarly i wouldnt expect Arpita to suddenly sing Lag Jaa Gale with the same passion as Meghna..or for that matter Meghna to scream her lungs out and yet give out a perfect rendition of Teri Niyat Kharab Hai...they wont do justice to these songs...Indian Idol 5 is unique in the way that they have got a perfect motley of all kinds of singers...

i think,Judges should respect every contestants individuality...theres a market for all kinds of voices in Bollywood and fresh voices are in demand.no one expects a girl to sing like Lataji anymore,so i dont think versatility should be a deterrant for any of these singers. If a particular singer is good at one genre, they should stick to it instead of experimenting.
