'Kooke' girl Antara graduates from Genelia to Katrina

Antara Mitra - Does the name ring a bell? Not really. And no one - whether the singer or the audience - can be blamed for that. After all she is one of those newbie singers who has just stepped into the world of playback singing and sung two numbers that are out and out different from each other. As a Bollywood follower, it is impossible to miss the track 'Bheegi Si' from the film Raajneeti which is playing on music channels 24X7. The voices behind this song picturised on Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are Mohit Chauhan and, as you would have guessed by now, Antara Mitra.

However, what is difficult to guess is the fact that she is the same girl who had sung 'Kooke Kooke' [Life Partner] last year. Yes, the same song (picturised on Genelia D'Souza) where the brief given to Antara was - 'Sing it so bad that people would love it'.

"That was the most unconventional start that any playback singer could have ever vouched for", laughs Antara when reminded of the incident that paved the way for her career in Bollywood, "Dada (as she fondly calls Pritam) gave me those two lines of 'Kooke' and asked me to go 'besura'. I asked that 'Dada, are you really serious?'. Even when he said yes, I couldn't believe him. He explained to me the situation but it required quite a few takes before I could really go completely off key. I was scared and asked 'dada' if this was actually the right start for a newcomer. He assured me that I won't regret singing the song. The way 'Kooke' turned so popular; I had no reasons not to believe in 'dada' thereafter."

However, the situation was entirely different once Pritam offered Antara a chance to sing 'Bheegi Si'.

"The moment I heard that song, I told 'dada' that this is one of his best compositions ever created", says the 21 year old singer who hails from Kolkota and has been stationed in Mumbai for past 5 years, "He is always over critical about his compositions and was still not too sure about 'Bheegi Si'. However, even as the song still remained to be mixed, I promised 'dada' that it would be one of his most acclaimed numbers."

As things stand today, Antara's promise has turned true as 'Bheegi Si' has seen instant acclaim coming its way. Not just has the song turned out to be quite popular in quick time, it has also enhanced the graph of Raajneeti which till a fortnight ago was looking like an out and out political drama sans any song and dance relief. However, the presence of 'Bheegi Si' coupled with Antara's wonderful job behind the mike has made many stand up and notice the fresh appeal that the music album has brought to fore now.

"For someone who has been mentored exceedingly well by 'dada', word 'thanks' would be too small in comparison", says Antara who was one of the Top-5 finalists in the reality show Indian Idol, "Singers don't quite get a second chance in the industry but Hindi music industry seems to be embracing me well. Pritam da has been extremely patient with me and his 'Bheegi Si' is something that I would cherish forever."

RAJNEETI music review

EXPECTATIONS

The very fact that Raajneeti has come up with a musical score is a surprise in itself. Reason being that the film's setting of a political drama doesn't quite allow one to hunt for any popular soundtrack here. A few weeks back Ram Gopal Varma's Rann too had boasted of a soundtrack and as is the tradition with many a film coming from the house of Varma, these too mainly comprised of musical pieces that were supposed to be played in the background. However, in case of Raajneeti, it is different because Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif grace the album cover, hence suggesting at least a song or two which would be set as romantic pieces. The album has four different composers – Pritam, Aadesh Shrivastava, Shantanu Moitra and Wayne Sharpe – coming up with a song apiece.

MUSIC

It is a nice little surprise at the very beginning of the album with Pritam and lyricist Irshad Kamil coming up with a quintessential mushy romantic track 'Bheegi Si Bhaagi Si'. The moment Antara Mitra comes behind the mike, you are immediately transported into the world of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani that boasted of half a dozen romantic tracks like these. The results are very good this time around as well with Mohit Chauhan lending further class to the song. A sweet sounding number which sounds as fresh as it gets, also mainly due to the efforts of the lead singers, 'Bheegi Si Bhaagi Si' could well have been what chartbuster tracks are made of had it found a place in a quintessential romantic musical. Naturally, Prakash Jha can be expected to have lapped on to it in the first hearing itself.

What would also have impressed him is the semi-classical fusion number 'Mora Piya' that Aadesh Shrivastava has churned up for the film. Taking centre stage after a hiatus, Aadesh comes up with one of his best compositions in the form of 'Mora Piya'. The song requires a few hearings to be grasped but sticks on to your mind after a while. Aadesh entrusts himself with the job of singing this slow moving song as well and does a rather good hob here.

Reminding of 'Kya Karoon Sajni' (Swami) from the 70s, 'Mora Piya' also features supporting vocals by Shashi and English vocals by Rosalie Nicholsan which results in a true fusion track. There is a brief hint of M.M. Kreem's 'Tum Mile' (Criminal) as well but only momentarily. All in all, an engaging soothing track which also sees Aadesh coming up with a 'twilight mix' as well as a female 'trance mix' version where Kavita Seth lends her vocals. Does the song's repeated presence come across as an intrusion? Not at all as it only helps the song to be registered further into the listener's mind.

Prakash Jha's Gangaajal and Apaharan have boasted of rustic and earthy item numbers and Raajneeti is no different with 'Ishq Barse' finding a place in the film. Undoubtedly the best that Jha has seen in his films, 'Ishq Barse' has a hint of Rajasthani folk but that only stays in the periphery via vocals of Pronob Biswas and Swanand Kirkire. Otherwise it is Hamsika Iyer's show all the way who brings in just the right kind of sensuality in her voice that makes 'Ishq Barse' stand apart from numerous item numbers that one hears today. What impresses most about this Shantanu Moitra composed track is the 'The Bombay Bounce Club Mix' version which is bound to find a place in the clubs and discotheques. A definite hit in the making, this Swanand Kirkire written track helps lending a commercial appeal to Raajneeti.

Finally comes 'Dhan Dhan Dharti' which is based on the tune of 'Vande Mataram'. First Shankar Mahadevan and then Sonu Nigam come up with their own solo versions of this Gulzar written track which has been put to tune by Wayne Sharpe. The only true blue situational track in Raajneeti, this one is the 'call of the soil' number (as is stated in one of the versions of the song as well) and ensures that Raajneeti stays on to have a classy appeal to it. However, it's reach is restricted to the film's narrative.

OVERALL

Music of Raajneeti delivers more than what one would have expected. Since the film is not a romantic musical, there would be quite some effort required by the makers to help the music reach out to masses. Also, around the release of the film, the focus is bound to shift towards the political drama that would mean that music may take a backseat. However, those who would catch the music would certainly not be disappointed.
