Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant reportedly got engaged to his childhood friend Shilpa, in a secret ceremony on his birthday on October 7. Strangely, though the engagement was common news in his locality, Abhijeet and his parents denied the reports. "Abhijeet bahut chhota hai, he's only 25. Why will he marry so soon? We just celebrated his birthday," his mother said. Worse still was Abhijeet, who said, "There are many Shilpas in the colony and I'm not close to any of them." However, rumour is he was under a lot of family pressure to get engaged to Shilpa, since the Sawants and Shilpa's parents are family friends. "The engagement was a private affair and the ceremony took place in Shilpa's relative's house in Goregaon," said a resident of Shahu Nagar, where Abhijeet lives. Another resident, Abhishek Nair, said, "Yes, Abhijeet and Shilpa got engaged in Abhijeet's flat. Shilpa has been in Abhijeet's life for a very long time. It was she who forced him to take part in the Indian Idol contest. Shilpa and Abhijeet go out to Shopper's Stop often, in Abhijeet's Honda City.
