India's very own idol | |
At first glance, he seems like any other schoolboy, sitting comfortably on a sofa and chatting animatedly with friends that surround him. But Abhijeet Sawant has more than just boyish charm to his credit. This 24-year old sang his way to stardom to become the country's first Idol. Fame, however, has not gone to his head, he claims. Ask him to describe himself and he says laughingly, "There's nothing to describe. I am me! I'm just here to entertain the people." Hours before his Lakhon Mein Ek Shaam concert in Bangalore, he spoke to Metrolife about life after Indian Idol. It has been a year since you were crowned the first Indian Idol. What have these months been like? It's been all about performances. I've done a lot of shows in a lot of places, although this is my first show in Bangalore. I have been appreciated a lot for my music and my talent, especially since I won the contest. The struggle has become a lot more easier now. Do you feel you have changed as a person after your win? No, not at all. What has changed is all external. If I hadn't become the Indian Idol, I would definitely have had to struggle for at least two more years to make my mark as a playback singer. But now, people recognise me. My name has been heard in social circles and people approach me with offers. I feel I am closer to my mark than ever before. Tell us about your music videos. Has acting proved much harder than singing? Yes, absolutely. It is harder to emote in front of the camera, while it is a totally different experience on the stage. Nevertheless, I felt good making those videos and all our hard work in creating them has been worth it. I'm sure you have a horde of female fans. Comment. Well, I cannot deny that. I do have a fan following and mostly women. During the first few months, I used to get greeted by fans everywhere. But now, I think it's time to give it all a backseat and concentrate on my music. I'm planning to bring out another album in December; this one will contain fast-paced numbers, with a little bit of romance thrown in for the youngsters. Any words of caution to the aspirants of the next Indian Idol? All I would have to say is that hard work is essential. Also, you must be prepared to handle the mental pressure that comes with competing on such a large scale contest. Any advice on how to handle Anu Malik? (Laughs) Well, you must be aware of him at all times. But he is a sweet person, so no fears there. |
