Versatility vs being very good in their style? What do you prefer?

I think Indian reality show fans really like versatility in their winners. Probably because of that winners are not as successful as other non versatile eliminated contestants from Indian shows, Like darmesh and raghav (he was initially not selected because of no versatility) are one of the most successful reality show contestants ever !

Personally I appreciate versatility but it's not the main thing for me . Versatility as an actor is good but as a singer I don't think anyone has ever been very good in all styles.

ALL of my fav ever singers sing in same style songs only. So , what do you prefer?

I think for reality show versatility as singer os best who can sing in any form

In real world if you perfect in one style is better than being medicore in various styles

Dance plus show encourages one dance style thought for Contestants and they reaching new heights using that form

If you are versatile that's great but the truth is not everyone can be versatile. But still they need to experiment, may be the outcome will be not be the same but we can say that at least they are trying.

But in reality shows it doesn't happen often. In SRGMP Ranjeet Rajwada was a ghazal singer and he sang ghazals in the whole season. Same for Mohammed Aman who is a pure classical singer and he did that in the show.

I understand it’s not easy to be versatile, but when a contestant sings only one type of songs while others have experimented, I tend to favour the one who experimented.

For us singers = playback singers and most of them are versatile.

I have just one choice.. Whatever I hear should be pleasing to the ears not screeching.

If its a peppy, foot tapping number it should make me want to dance Or at least tap my foot spontaneously 

If its a song full of romance, melody Or sadness it should evoke that feeling. Basically feel the song.

Being versatile is not important. There are many famous singers in industry who sing in the style only which they are comfortable with. I think reality shows should encourage them to focus on their talent rather than force them to sing in a style which they are not interested in.

Its like asking a romantic fiction writer to write a thriller.

Being best at their style. Versatility is cool but I am not complaining Nusrat Fateh Ali khan never sang trendy pop music, or Jagjit singh only sang ghazals. Be good at what you do, be the best at it. Versatility is a type of talent itself but it comes second to being experts in your area.

For watching these shows I feel it is a must, otherwise it is boring and predictable.

Wherein lies the challenge ? Your limitations as a singer are exposed if you prefer the comfort zone.

Since almost all of them are recycled what is the point in churning out the same songs which have made you famous in the past. What is your growth as a singer ??

Who would look forward to the show unless you are a die hard fan or related in some way to the contestant ?

Songs are allotted to contestants based on the theme of the episode. They get a choice of 3 or 4 songs and they sing one based on the advice of the Content Team. The song selection often restricted by the rights owned by Sony. You can't choose any song that you want.

In most years, serious contenders do get tested on versatility at a later stage. usually around the Top 7 stage. Some of these are episodes without star guests. So if any contestant has to make the Top 5 they will be tested through their range.

This was very evident in Idol 10 when much was made of Salman being tested with stuff he was not known to be comfortable with. I would expect a Qawwali Night at some stage of Idol 12. That will test some for versatility.
