Look at the "inspirations" that brought us the dance yesterday. I have to say, the first is the original, the second song is plagiarism, the last plays the song only while adding a different Western dance which is not a fault. The first was one of the hottest, most civil dances I ever saw. I feel that the CVs of Imlie possibly saw the dance or the cadence helped with the modern Western dance anyway. Fourth and final is the extra which helped the waltz influences in the dance.

First - original music and dance with a classical orchestra

Second - plagiarizes original classical composition hoping people won't notice

Third - uses Hindi song (with permission, hopefully) and incorporates standard dance - no plagiarism here

Fourth - waltz inspiration for the dance and cinematography above

I am icky about plagiarism charges on music and dancing because they truly are societal resources, they are collective and pass down from one generation to another.

Like, 60 years back, a single song would be covered by various established artistes. Music publishing has always been exploitative of PoC artistes.

On the other hand, Bollywood is notorious for ripping off songs/movies without doing any work themselves. The lines between inspiration and plagiarism is hazy at best.

The classical piece is old enough to not have copyright, but they are not acknowledging it's use. They are passing it off as their own music. Bollywood really got caught once the internet took off. Just about everything is plagiarized in the 80s and 90s. Funny thing is that getting caught didn't discourage them.
