Before he couldn't see her face properly but this time her features were clear to him.
He lifted the blanket and got out up, sitting at the edge of the bed, his head in his hands. He wished these nightmares would evade him. He just wanted one night where he could sleep through without being haunted by the visions of his past. But that was impossible. Ever since that fateful night the dreams, the flashbacks, the sleepless nights just would not stop. He heard footsteps outside his room and looked up at his door. The footsteps stopped so he got up and went to see who it was.
Aarzoo was stood there with a glass of water. He looked at her, confused as he read a look of concern on her face. "What do you want?"
"I heard you scream"
"You must have misheard"
"No. I'm sure I heard a scream coming from..."
"I said" he interrupted sternly "you misheard"
"Okay" Aarzoo replied, shaking her head. The last thing she wanted was to get into a debate with him in the middle of the night.
She offered the glass of water she was holding but he shook his head. "I don't need it" he told her and she sighed and pushed past him before he could protest. "Wh-"
"I'll leave it here all the same" she placed it on the bedside cabinet.
"I told you, I don't need it" he told her as she made her way back to the door and turned to him.
"I know you did. But I don't wanna go back to the kitchen just to put it away"
"Are you done?" He asked and she nodded before he closed the door on her.
"You're welcome!" She called quietly through the door and he heard her walking off.
Alvira stood in the hallway with a victorious smile before making her way back to bed. Every night she wanted to go and comfort him. But she knew he wouldn't let her. She knew that he would continue to punish himself but not letting anyone have any kind of contact with him. So she stopped herself. She stopped her motherly instincts that would plead with her every night in bed whenever she heard his scream.
"Anam's nowhere to be seen" Sahir commented the next morning to his mother as Joe handed him his jacket to put on. She was sat at the breakfast table, watching her son.
"Yeah, she's gone away for a few days. She said she'll be back by the weekend" Alvira told him and he rolled his eyes.
"And she wants to own Saiyara" he muttered.
"Good morning Aunty" Aarzoo joined them "Assalamo Alaikum"
"Wa Alaikum Assalaam beta" Alvira smiled "Come. Have breakfast" She said as Aarzoo was about to sit down beside her.
"She hasn't got time for breakfast" Sahir told his mother "We're getting late"
"Sahir.." Alvira began. She wanted them both to eat but at least one of them should.
"It's okay Aunty, we'll have breakfast at the office"
"Okay" She smiled and Aarzoo glanced at Sahir who was busy reading a file that Joe had just handed to him. Aarzoo gave Alvira a look but she smiled back, confused.
"You know Aunty. Ammi has always told me that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. One should never miss it"
"There's more important things to focus on than breakfast" He was sure not to dismiss her mother.
"Nothing's more important than breakfast" She said grabbing a piece of toast and made her way over to him. He raised an eyebrow as she offered him the toast. "For your mum. Haven't you noticed? She hasn't eaten a thing yet" She told him and he looked over her shoulder to see that Alvira's plate was actually empty. He hadn't even seen that she wasn't eating anything.
He sighed. "Well?" She asked and he took the piece of toast from her. "Eat it then" she told him when he stood there with the toast in his hand. This girl was beginning to get on his last nerves! So damn bossy! Who did she think she was? "Your mum's waiting" She added, making him feel guilty so he took a small bite. "I'll be in the car. Don't be long" he said before leaving.
Aarzoo gave Alvira a smile and Alvira reciprocated. He may not have eaten the whole thing in front of her, but he took a bite. And that was good enough. Aarzoo grabbed a piece of toast for herself before rushing out after him.
