I rememeber reading in one website(maybe "Mugglenet") that some fan had actually asked a similar question from JKR.I think the question that person had asked is that since Harry must have seen the death of his mother & also possibly his father(this had been asked before the 7th book was released) he should have been able to see Thestrals from his first day at Hogwarts. If I remember right,JKR's answer had been that in order to see Thestrals the realisation of death should "sink-in" I think what she must have meant was that you should actually feel it deeply.Ok,so Harry was too small to realise that his parents were dead at that time. But then given the fact that Harry had witnessed Cedric's death & he was actually even feeling somewhat responsible for it since he had told Ced to take the cup with him,Cedric's death would have sunk in to him enough for him to be able to see the Thestrals at the end of his 4th year.
This makes sense and I think (after reading your explanation) that the fact that he could not see the thestrals at the end of book four meant that he was still somewhat "numb" about Cedric's death and only over the summer did he really come to terms with it, in other words only then did it sink in.😕
I know that this is stretching the theory a little, but its the only explanations that make any sense to me. Anyone has any other theories??😕

i dont knew whether this is a blooper.in the books it is sid that you need the password to get inside the house common room.but in harry potter and the chamber of secrets when harry and ron wants to take the hair of crabbe and goyle to make the potion.they gave crabbe and goyle cakes that made you sleep.but how did they went to slytherin room iff they didnt knew the password.
It is not a blooper😛 After they take the polyjuice potion & turn in to Crabbe & Goyle, they run in to Malfoy who has been searching for them(i.e.Crabbe & Goyle not Harry & Ron😆) He leads them to the Slytherin common room & at the entrance asks them "What's the new password again?" Harry who obviously doesn't know the password says "Er.." &Malfoy answers his own question saying "Oh,yeah,Pureblood" So even if Harry & Ron didn't know the password to the Slytherin common room,Malfoy unknowingly saved the day for them😛
As for taking hairs from Crabbe & Goyle, they didn't get inside the Slytherin common room to get them. They placed some cake or something which Hermione had filled with a sleeping draught & placed them on a bannister outside the Great Hall where Crabbe & Goyle found them & ate them & then became unconscious. Then Harry & Ron took the hairs from them & hid them in a broom cupboard. It is all there in the book & you can also see it in the movie😃
