Radcliffe: Phoenix Darker, Complex

Daniel Radcliffe, star of the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, told SCI FI Wire that the fifth film in the series is bigger and more complex than its predecessors. "On an emotional level there's much bigger stuff than I had to do in the fourth film, like obviously what happens to [a key character] and Harry's reaction to that," Radcliffe, 17, said in an interview during a break in filming last September at Leavesden Studios outside London.

In Order of the Phoenix, based on J.K. Rowling's book, Harry returns for his fifth year of study at Hogwarts and discovers that much of the wizarding community is in denial about the evil Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), leaves the students unprepared to fight Voldemort, forcing Harry and his friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) to form "Dumbledore's Army."

Unlike the previous film, The Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix is more about political intrigue and the search for the truth. "There's no major physical action set pieces, other than, of course, the final standoff between Voldemort and Harry and Harry and Voldemort and all the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix," Radcliffe said. "That's going to be pretty spectacular, I think."

Radcliffe added: "Harry goes through what every teenager goes through, in a way. He feels angry. And, of course, Harry's feelings are exacerbated by the fact that he has had all of these troubles in his life, and ... [he] has had people trying to kill him at numerous times, really."

Harry turns to Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), worried that he may be turning into a bad person himself. "There's a lot going on inside of his head, and I think that, for me as an actor, that makes him more interesting to do," Radcliffe said. "And I think, for an audience, he becomes a more charismatic sort of character to watch, because he is so of two different sides." Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opens July 13. —Patrick Lee, News Editor
