The arrival of the sixth Harry Potter book on July 16 is a great excuse to get your child to learn some science. These Harry Potter-themed camps are still taking applicants:

The Sci-Port Discovery Center in Shreveport, La. ($70; sci-port.org) is holding weeklong camps based on the fourth book's Triwizard Tournament. At a book-release party, students take classes on plant science and learn how to care for owls.

Pennsylvania State University offers three one-week programs (starting at $295; sciencecamps.psu.edu). Students learn about nanotechnology and mineralogy.

Infotonics Tech Center in Canandaigua, N.Y., offers seven weeklong sessions ($225; infotonics.org). Counselors wear wizard outfits and students learn about physics in the Hogwarts world, with experiments comparing a rocket launch to that of a topnotch broomstick. Ready for takeoff?
