'free' in isolation could mean many things but in the context it seems to mean 'for a price' or 'not for free' or 'achieving it on merit basis'...😕 🤔

hmmm...i dont think fun-words or any other kind of words used in books with reference to something or someone based on the concerned thing's or being's characteristic feature can be taken in literal sense... bcoz those words were used metaphorically in the books to begin with, so those words outside of books used for the same thing or being will not loose its metaphoric identity...
