Chapter 5:
MY FUNNY EXPERIENCE
"It was early in the morning, around 6 AM, maybe. I was taking my everyday walk along the path in the woods. Then I heard a noise, so I went to investigate. I saw a strange apparition of a skull with a tongue which was in the form of a snake, but it disappeared in a few seconds. It must have been my imagination. I should really stop watching those horror movies late at night!"
It was hardly one paragraph. But as Dumbledore read it out loud the entire Order let out a collective gasp. Sirius had investigated and found out that Mr. Whittaker had sent it as a contribution to the Funny Experiences column but it had been rejected, obviously because it sounded so weird to the Muggles. Everyone began talking at once. They came up to Sirius and congratulated him on his good work. He was grinning and taking all the praise graciously.
Too graciously, according to Alex. She was bristling with irritation at all the attention Sirius was getting.
"I was the one who picked up the rejected articles by mistake from the office. I got them home. I would have read them too if it hadn't been for my dumb assignment. And so Sirius gets all the praise!" she was muttering furiously to no one in particular.
Sirius heard her. He gave her a big toothy grin. She glared back in return.
Once all of them had calmed down, they settled down to listen to Dumbledore.
"Well, friends, this is my theory," he started, "the letter says Mr. Whittaker is from a locality in London. I happen to know for a fact that a very famous Muggle children's camp takes place near that area every year. It is possible that Voldemort and his Death Eaters may be deciding to create some havoc over there. The appearance of the Dark
Mark there certainly points towards the fact that death eaters may be residing in that area. Probably one of the death eaters cast the mark as a prank on the Muggle. I am sure it was not done on Voldemort's orders. I shudder to think of the state of that poor death eater now. But the important point is that the news has reached us. Actually I have already got clues that the death eaters might be in that area, but this is the most definite clue yet." He looked through his half moon spectacles at Alex and said, "I believe it was Ms. Alexandra who found those papers. I think we all need to applaud her on her brilliant piece of work, even if it was an accident." His eyes twinkled.
Alex's eyes widened. How had he known? She blushed as she released that Dumbledore must have somehow overheard her grumbling. But when the entire room broke out into applause for her, she beamed. She flashed a triumphant look towards Sirius, who was looking sulky. Then Dumbledore mentioned Sirius' name too, and he looked somewhat satisfied.
After the meeting James, Lily, Sirius, and Alex went back home.
"What about going out for a late lunch?" James asked.
"Oh, I can't make it," Alex said apologetically, "I have to get to Auror training. I can't even miss today because I have to submit my assign-" she stopped, her eyes widening, "Oh my God! I totally forgot! In the excitement of finding the news I didn't get to complete the assignment! Ms. Deanna is gonna kill me! It's already two days overdue!"
She started pacing, worried.
"Chill, Alex!" Sirius said, "I've got away without handing in about half the assignments! Let me come with you. I can help you get away!"
"Oh, can you?" Alex asked, sounding relieved. Then she suddenly stopped pacing and looked at Sirius suspiciously. "Since when are you interested in helping me?"
Sirius shrugged. "Since your teachers started having interesting sounding names like Miss Deanna." He said it matter-of-factly, sounding very serious.
The glare she gave him then frightened even Sirius.
"Ok, ok, bad joke," he admitted, giving her a weak grin, "But I'm serious. I can help you out."
She opened her mouth as though she was going to say something against, thought the better of it, and closed it. She turned around and walked wordlessly out of the room.
Sirius flashed James and Lily a 'Hey-what-can-the-world-do-without-me' grin and followed Alex out the door.
James and Lily looked thoughtful as both their friends left the house.
*~*
Once they were in the Auror building Alex led Sirius to the hall where she would be having her lecture. She had resigned herself to the fact that Sirius was going to try and get her out of handing in her assignment. She hardly wanted to see how badly he would fail. They stopped at the entrance and looked in. A witch sat at a desk in front, looking over a bunch of papers. She was very young with dark red hair. She looked beautiful. Sirius grinned and asked, "That's your professor?"
"Yeah…why do you ask?" Alex said suspiciously.
Sirius' grin widened. "Al, you needn't worry about handing in your assignment anymore." And, giving her a quick wink, he strode into the hall.
It had barely registered that Sirius had just called her Al and winked at her, before Sirius started flirting with her Professor.
Alex fumed as she glared at the both of them. Does that guy have no better job on this planet? She thought furiously. Every time a girl is involved, this guy decides to flirt his way into (or, in this case, out of) the situation. Even her Professor seemed to be lapping up whatever Sirius was saying to her. She was gazing up at Sirius with a rapturous look.
Grudgingly, even Alex had to admit that the Professor had good reason to look at Sirius like that. Sirius was talking to her with an easy smile on his face, running his hand through his hair every few minutes. How would it be if Sirius was talking to Alex (sorry, Al) like that…
Alex blinked. What am I thinking? She thought in disgust. This is Sirius we're talking about!
Suddenly Alex realized that Sirius was looking at her out of the corner of his eye. He indicated her to come in. Nervously Alex stepped into the hall. She was thinking about which excuse to use for not completing her assignment.
"Uh, Professor…" she started tentatively.
She was thinking about what she would scream at Sirius about his failed attempt to get her out of this situation…
Sirius, you are the most irritating, disgusting thing I have ever had the misfortune to meet…
"Huh? Oh, yes, Ms. Greene, go ahead, take your seat now." Her Professor said vaguely, waving in Alex's general direction as she continued to stare at Sirius.
…Sirius, you are absolutely the most wonderful angel to have been born onto this planet…
Not able to believe her good luck, Alex went and took her seat.
She looked at Sirius openly flirting with her Professor again. Her momentary elation turned sour again.
…Sirius, you are soooo infuriating…
Sirius turned then and gave a little wave. She glared at him.
He raised an eyebrow at her. Then, shrugging, he left.
"That's all the thanks you get these days in the world," he muttered, rolling his eyes as he walked out of the hall.
"Oh, uh, so, yes, students, I can start today's lesson…" Deanne was saying, "I mean, before we were interrupted by…" flustered, the Professor looked out of the hall, and said, "What…what did he say his name was again?" she asked with a weak smile.
Shaking her head, Alex smiled as she looked down towards her notes.
…Sirius, you are such a…Sirius!
