CHAPTER 1
"Thank you for coming on such short notice. I have called all of you here today for a very important reason. As you all know, I have, time and again, stressed the importance of our latest mission. We can choose only the best Aurors for the job. You might have guessed by now that you all are my obvious choices. I am, of course, only informing you now. We will meet later to go over the details. I trust the four of you will do an excellent job."
Finishing his speech, Dumbledore smiled at James, Sirius, and Lily.
Looking around, Sirius felt proud of himself, James, and Lily. Being chosen by Dumbledore for something so important felt great.
"Excuse me, Professor," Lily said, "but you said the four of us. Don't James, Sirius, and me make three people? Is there someone who's joining us?"
Someone would be joining them? Who could be as good as them? Sirius looked towards Dumbledore, interested to hear his response.
"Yes, Lily, there is a fourth person joining you. I'm afraid she has been detained for some reason and couldn't attend the meeting."
She? This mission ought to be interesting, Sirius thought with a sly grin.
"Sorry I'm late, Professor," a voice said from behind them, "I was just completing my last assignment."
Turning around, Sirius came face to face with…
Her.
She stared back at him with equal disgust.
He could not believe this. Why should this happen only to him? Thinking back, he slowly remembered that time, seven years ago in his fourth year.
He was standing at the edge of the Great Lakeearly in the morning, awaiting his detention. He spotted Professor McGonagall walking towards him, with a girl at her side. He could not make out who it was. Both were wearing large coats to protect themselves from the light rain that was falling. Sirius had not bothered with a coat. He believed he looked dashing when his wet hair curled all over his forehead. Which, of course, was true.
McGonagall and the girl came up to him and stopped. As the Professor explained their detention, Sirius looked at the girl. He thought he recognized her as a Third Year. He had seen her around in the Gryffindor common room. She had startlingly deep purple eyes, and her burgundy hair which showed traces of its original black colour fell in waves down to her shoulder. She was looking at McGonagall with a bored expression on her face.
"…understood?" McGonagall said.
Automatically, Sirius and the girl nodded their heads. Their detention was to plant Professors Sprout's latest exotic water-plants at one side of the Lake. As McGonagall walked away, Sirius turned to the girl.
"So, you got detention too, huh?" he asked with a grin.
"Hmmm..." she said vaguely, examining the seeds they were supposed to plant.
He felt miffed. No girl EVER passed up the chance to talk with Sirius Black. And here was this girl, who hardly bothered to give him even a second glance.
As she took off her coat, Sirius noticed what she was wearing. It was a long, brightly colored top worn over deep green tights.
"What is that you're wearing?" he asked, before he could stop himself.
The girl turned for the first time to look at him. She held her deep penetrating gaze over him. He felt like he was a specimen being observed under a microscope. He decided he did not like the feeling.
"They're called clothes." she said coolly, "Why, don't you like them?"
Sirius had wanted to scream a NO in her face, but he controlled himself.
"Well…they're not what I'm usually accustomed to seeing people wear."
The girl narrowed her eyes very slightly. "It's good that you don't like it. Otherwise I'd have to go and change."
"Yeah? Well, I hope you don't wear stuff like that all the time. I mean, I'm sure you get a lot of guys who ask you out, what with you wearing those things."
Her wand was out of her pocket in a flash. He realized he had said too much, when, precisely three seconds later, he was sopping wet due to the jet of lake water she had put over him.
He gazed down at himself in disbelief. Sure, he looked good with wet hair, but this was taking it a little too far.
She summoned his wand to her so he couldn't hex her. He wanted to go hit her, but some gentlemanly instinct stopped him from doing so. They glared at each other for a few seconds longer. Sirius then turned about on his heel with what dignity he had left and set about doing the detention. She joined him, but an angry silence remained between the two of them. Later he had grabbed his wand from her and strode back to the castle without a backward glance at her.
That had been his first meeting with Alexandra Greene. Ever since they had been sworn enemies, crossing each others paths every now and then, each time with disastrous results.
And now he would have to work with her. Side-by-side. Partners.
The very thought creeped him out.
Both of them walked up to Dumbledore at the same time.
"Professor, isn't this girl still an Auror-in-training?" Sirius demanded, wishing there was some mistake.
"Professor, I don't think this man is mature enough to understand that even an Auror-in-training is capable of the mission." She retorted.
"But she…she's younger! She doesn't have enough experience!"
"Oh, and he's had a lot of experience, hasn't he, in ONE year?"
"Professor, she might get herself into something dangerous!"
"I think it's him, with his recklessness, who's likely to do something careless!"
Realizing that he was losing this argument, and quite badly, Sirius turned towards James and Lily in desperation for help. He saw that they had extremely funny looks on their faces. He realized with a start that they were trying their best not to laugh.
Dumbledore spoke for the first time. Even he sounded highly amused.
"I think that both Sirius and Alexandra are perfectly capable. The arguments that you both made to me (or, I should rather say, to each other) are meaningless. Alexandra may be still in training, but she is one of the brightest young girls I have ever seen in my career. Like I said before, I trust the four of you will enjoy your stay in a house in muggle locality together."
Sirius and Alex turned towards each other in horror.
They were going to live in the same house?
