CHAPTER 3
"Thank god this is over!" said Monica as she entered her room. Sirius had led her to her room, lest that she lost her way.
"You bet!"
"Don't tell me there is going to be another party tomorrow night! I cannot stand one more evening of girls throwing themselves on you…" she stopped short and kicked herself for saying that out loud. Sirius, however, just smiled at the comment and to Monica's relief did not press on that comment.
"It's our bad luck there is! And engagement party!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"Promise that you will never leave my side!" Sirius looked at her with intense depth in his eyes and Monica realized exactly how her words had sounded.
"No… I meant … just for tomorrow evening… to give me some company…"
"I will never leave your side Nicky!" she broke away from his gaze and blushed. He abruptly walked out to his room. She looked down at her fingers… blushing and remembering her school days…
*~*
"Monica, hey Mon! Wake up!"
She rubbed her eyes and looked up at Lily staring down at her.
"Lily… what?"
"Listen, you have to help me today! Ill go crazy!" she yelled.
"What? Why? Why are you waking me up and yelling at me already?"
"I have to make arrangements for the party… and you HAVE TO HELP!"
"I'll be down there!"
*~*
"Thank god you are here!"
"What do I have to do James?" asked Monica looking at James. James threw up his hands in surrender.
"Ask Lily. And whatever you do please do NOT disobey her. she is a little crazy…"
"Shut up James!" said Lily punching him playfully on the arm. He laughed and pulled her into a short, sweet kiss.
"What are you standing here and kissing me for? Go and get the flowers arranged out there!" she chided him, pushing him out.
"What did I tell you? Crazy." He said whispering to Monica and rushed out when he got a glare from Lily. Monica laughed fondly after James.
"You both make the cutest pair!"
"I think I will go out and help James since I won't be doing much cooking." Said Sirius looking around the kitchen.
"Oh no, you don't! You and Monica are going to decorate the party hall!"
"Every bit of it?"
"What are you? Muggles?"
"I think I will stick to cook…"
"Get out of my kitchen right now and do what I say! NOT A SINGLE WORD OF PROTEST. SHOOT!"
Sirius looked startled and caught Monica by her shoulders, leading her outside before Lily attacked them.
*~*
"For the last time Sirius, we cannot have flesh-eating pumpkins adorn the tables!"
"Why not?"
"Well," she started, as if explaining patiently to stubborn 5-yr-old that 1 + 1 = 2, "for one, it is not a Halloween party and for the second, it would not help if all our guests are eaten up before the wedding!"
"Oh! I didn't think of that!" said Sirius scratching his head in mock-thinking.
"Doofus!" said Monica fondly ruffling his hair and conjuring glowing fairies with heart-shaped wings to light the lamps. Sirius ran his hand over the spot on his head where Monica had touched him. He looked back at her.
She was adding final touches to the ice-sculptors of Life-size images of Lily and James. Her long hair was worn up in a crab clip on the top of her head and strands of hair fell down on the sides of her face, covered with drops of sweat. She was wearing an over-sized red t-shirt with rolled up sleeves. She wore black tights and loosened the collar and fanned herself with her hand. Sirius stared at her profile, not able to take his eyes away from her. She walked over to a big white couch and sat down, closing his eyes from exhausin and letting her hair loose, falling over the back of the couch. Sirius saw that she was too tired even to fan herself and used his wand to blow some air on her.
"Thank you so much Sirius!" she muttered and opened her eyes lightly. He sat down next to her on the couch and placed his hand on hers.
"Doesn't the place look great?"
"It is so romantic!" she said dreamily.
"You know what would make it better?"
"No flying dragons circling the couple on the stage!"
"That is not dangerous because flying dragons don't have teeth."
"Let me remind you that this is an engagement party!"
Sirius mock-pouted.
"You are so cute! You remind me of the times we used to …" she stopped short as they looked into each others eyes [for the enth time since they had met] She got up suddenly and pulled her hand away.
"Nicky…" he called after her.
"Don't! Don't call me that … it … it…"
"Hurts, doesn't it?" he said in a husky voice, "We need to talk."
"No Sirius… I hear Lily calling… gotta go…" she said rushing out.
