Do wizards need maths?

How do all the magical folk survive without basic knowledge of the sciences, maths, geography, earth history. I can understand how their magic supersedes the sciences and they do study their own history, but what about geography and maths? Surely, math is important?

Perhaps they just use spells like Add'em and Mineus 😃 😛

Wizards
By Daniel Adam Bergstein

Harry Potter is strong and gifted with power.
He can do marvelous things, make enemies cower.
But he doesn't know math; they don't teach that at 'Warts.
So I'm wiser than he, and his mathless cohorts.
Suck on that, Mr. Potter. You're not so great.
What good is a wand, if you can't calculate?
Run away with your spells and philosopher rocks.
I'll rule your world with a basic knowledge of stocks.

I think Arithmancy (arithmetic) must be kinda like Maths, right? That's what I thought.

well basic math like addition, subtraction and etc are pretty elementary. and the kids don't enter hogwarts until they are 11. i don't think the kids are completely unaware of basic math until they are 11. i can't imagine them just sitting at home and playing till they are 11. i mean that is a long time. i would believe that hogwarts expects the children's parents to have taught their kids basic math and other other stuff. i think the wizard parents are responsible for teaching them all these basic stuff.

Agreed. Arithmancy is advanced Math.

"Arithmancy is a branch of magic concerned with the magical properties of numbers. As neither Harry nor Ron take this class, almost nothing is known about it. It is, however, a favourite subject of Hermione. Arithmancy is reportedly difficult, as it requires memorising or working with many charts. The subject is taught by Professor Septima Vector."

I doubt anyone managed to teach Ron 😆 The twins are exemplary at the basic maths though especially in counting money 😊

Seems like wizarding parents have a lot more teach their offspring than the muggles. Wouldn't it be easier to simply send the kids to muggle school till they hit 11? Of course, it might be heard since even open minded wizard parents are lost on the most basic muggle amenities. Possibly Ms Rowling didn't do this because it would take away so many witty moments from the book (think Ron shouting on the telephone 😃).

lol i dunno about the other subjects, but i am pretty damn well sure that the weasley's know how to do the basic math like addition, subtraction and etc, given their financial background. and yes u are right, the twins WOULD know! 😆 as for the other subjects, i dunno! i was just taking a guess that they would be taught from their parents.

and i agree that JKR probably left all this out for the particular witty moments. and i say it was a smart move! i personally enjoyed those moments (ron shouting on a telephone, weasleys filling the entire envelope with stamps when they mailed harry at privet drive through muggle post!😆).

And Mr. Weasley's forever fascination with all things muggle. Why would anyone collect plugs?! 😆

OMG! This sounds so much like numerology...magical properties of numbers WOW! And there are lots of charts and calculations involved in astrology too, nice. In all, sounds like a mixture of advanced math, numerology and astro,. combined. Sometimes, I feel, the kind of stuff they teach at Hogwarts, who WOULDN'T be an A plus student? I mean, this stuff is so interesting, no wonder Hermione goes psycho studying 24/7, I don't blame her. 😆

True, It'd be easier to send them to school but then again, maybe some wizard parents do adopt that plan (of sending their kids to nurseries/primary schools like Harry/Hermione did...at least the ones who aren't staunch Muggle haters, who knows). But yes @ Rapier, I think even JKR mentioned that they are home schooled up until 11...so yep, that's what the Weasleys did. \

Damn guys, Now I want a Weasley book all about Arthur Molly home schooled Ron etc...you guys have put ideas into my head. 😆

It's basically to show a human being's fascination for the unknown. Just like how there are many people who fear/loathe the unknown and different (case in point - Lucius's hatred for Muggles and their Muggle ways), Mr Weasley is an example of the people who are forever curious about the unknown. Lol @ collecting plugs...'eckeltricity' is such a great word. 😆
