Totally agree. To my reading she was never obsessed with Voldermort and his form of evil and was more focussed on upholding the rule of law. Now her methods in so doing are questionable, especially in DH.

Pardon me here though, but 'Sadistic' is word too strong , and knowing what it means after a dear friend of mine I met on the forum once explained to me I don't think any of the characters of HP series qualify for the word , no , not even Voldemort.

Well as for Umbridge, she made me want to kick her in her butt, but for all I know she was twisted in her head, you know a wiring problem, this uncannily neat person ( physically, she couldnt stand a small deviation) and yes certainly misguided, not because she jus followed cornelius, the woman sent dementors on her own judgement and not on Cornelius' instructions, so yes she is twisted and an arrogant fool which is more dangerous!

You may be right about Umbridge not being sadistic, but why isn't Voldemort? I always though sadistic meant having pleasure in seeing others' pain, and Voldemort certainly took pleasure in seeing others' pain.

Yes, sadistic means taking pleasure in seeing others' pain ...but it also means taking...err...well yea... I don't want to mention it...you could say Voldemort falls into the category in a way

I think HP is full of grey characters and I love that. Those are the most interesting and compelling characters for me. The only white characters I can think of are Luna, Neville and Lily.

@Musical Aishwarya - Coz voldemort did it for the simple reason to feel powerful, it was not a cheering act for him. He was too obsessed with his power and his battle to conquer death! But to just enjoy the pain of others for pleasure is something that qualifies for sadistic which I dont think voldemort fell into.

In many parts of the books, Dumbledore and other characters like Arthur Weasley wrote about how Voldemort and his Death Eaters enjoyed seeing the pain of Muggles while they tortured them. In Half Blood Prince, Dumbledore told Harry that as a child, Tom Riddle tortured the other kids in the orphanage and that became the only source of enjoyment for him, because seeing others' pain gave him the pleasure of being in control.
And during the Death Eater attack in the beginning of Goblet of Fire, Arthur Weasley explained to Harry and the others that the Death Eathers, when torturing those three muggles, had used a technique often used in the 1st War against Voldemort.
Maybe Voldemort did not feel pleasure when torturing other Wizarding people, but he did feel pleasure when torturing muggles, and it's written in many places in the HP books.

@godisone - I see what your point, but the bottom line for torturing the less fortunate than him for voldemort gave him the sense of control, and well the book might have used the word pleasure, but its always been control... and sense of feeling powerful... his desire to conquer death was the same.

Deriving maniacal pleasure out seeing someone suffer for no other reason but to cheer oneself up is something that is well...I dont Voldemort classified for that!

These are just my thoughts, no offence.
