"A chain is only as strong as its weakest link" Proverb
Arpita went running, the phone call echoed in her ear, her frightened eyes searched for someone, anyone. She saw Bhauji and threw herself at her feet; nothing too great if it meant saving Avdesh's life. A small smile flitted across Bhauji's face at having Arpita at her feet.... she hears the tumbling words...that Avdesh's life is in danger, to stop him from going to war....
"Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up." James Arthur Baldwin
Bhauji walks out side and gathers all the men around her... one by one all the men turn to her, as if paying homage to their Queen... she was at that moment the undisputed ruler of these men; Arpita looks on expectantly waiting for Bahuji to recall them back.....Instead she gets them to touch a container full of holy water, making them promise that they will achieve victory and keep Avdesh's pride intact.... Arpita shocked could only stare speechless as the men make their vows one by one....Bhauji smiles pleased at being obeyed by all without a question.
Avdesh looks at Arpita before going and Arpita unable to send of her husband into a trap starts running towards him, only to be stopped in her tracks by Bhauji's warning... AviTa share a look before he drives off.....She turns to Bhauji...how could you send them off after knowing everything?..I told you about the trap?...you yourself said Avdeshji is the strength and might of this place....he listens to you!...why did you let him go?!
"Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do . . . but how much love we put in that action": Mother Teresa
Bhauji gathers Arpita in a iron hug.....muttering how women are like shoes, if they cut then they are discarded... that she will not let Arpita be a chain around Avdesh's neck...that she won't lose babuaji to a two bit girl like her.....finally Bhauji lets her go and grits out through clenched teeth that the man of the house has gone to fight and you cry here to bring bad luck on him....this is our world, this is how we are!...I have trust in him that is why I did not stop him!......Alone in the courtyard, Arpita yearningly stares at the gates of the haveli, her heart and soul with her husband....she runs through darkened corridor to her room, to seek solace and comfort from the familiar, a picture of a relaxed Avdesh looks on as she shuts the door and leans against it remembering haunting words.... she prays for the safety of all, the end to this fight that took her husband away from her...
"In dreams and in love there are no impossibilities." Janos Arany
It was a dark and starry night, the moon out in full glory. In a clear gathering, police stood around planning the capture of Avdesh Singh Thakur....He walks into their trap with his men. For a moment, the disparate group stood frozen like deer's in the glare of headlights.....and then survival instincts take over..... Cops and outlaws, sought the cover of darkness and played their game of life and death....the forest clearing rang with the sharp crack of guns, the slight thump as it found its target of human flesh.....Suddenly Avdesh stood clear, hand raised...at the same moment, his mortal enemy, RV, raised his gun and took him down... squarely on the chest....Avdesh's blood shone red and wet, falling like the tears of a weeping woman, silent and yet deadly....slowly, Avdesh's eyes darkened as he fell on the dark forest floor.......Avdeshji! Avdeshji!....the haunting cry of a woman could be heard...slowly the forest wavered and took shape of a darkened room and Arpita sat up straight, chest heaving from the nightmare that was so real she could taste and touch it....
Cold and deadly fear makes her get up and go running from the room and outside, crying hysterically for her husband...Avdeshji! Avdeshji...it was a mantra, a prayer on her lips that by calling his name, she could keep him tethered to this earth....her feet slipped and she fell, but she got up and limped towards the gate, her only goal was to reach her husband before he went away forever....behind her the lights of the haveli turns on, Bahuji and Co. all came rushing concern on their face...Arpita stands trembling, out of her mind with fear and terror, the one name constant on her lips...she run to Bhauji...Avdesh is in danger!.. Bhauji remained firm in her belief that he was alright.... a call was made to the men but no response...
.....Then the howls of dogs could be heard outside the haveli gates....the harbinger of doom....Arpita's eyes flare wide in despair...
My thoughts:
I understand Arpita's emotions. Everything starts and ends with love for her. The moment she knew of the trap, she fell at Bahuji's feet knowing that she is the only one able to command Avdesh and get him to listen.....Yet Bhauji thinks her weak, a not suitable wife for Avdesh at all. But this is where she miscalculates. For Arpita is strong. Her love gives her the ability to see things clearly; yes it does colour her emotions and actions but only for the sake of her love...not for any other gain at all. That is her greatest strength as well as her weakness...she see's Bhauji clearly but does not question, perhaps her promise to Avdesh keeps her quiet or perhaps her own mind is shying away from the horror of Bhauji's illicit feelings for him...I hope she does pick up on it soon and questions it...today they stood in contrast, one cool as ice and the other an emotional wreck....only on the surface though...
The question now: Is she reacting to fear itself or did she have a premonition through the power of her love for Avdesh?...It cannot be denied, she has a deep abiding love for him, that gives her an almost sixth sense when it comes to him and his well being. But she has never lived in a home where daily living consists of warfare, and to people living like this death has become second nature, kept at bay while life goes on. I prefer to believe in her love and her heightened sense when it comes to Avdesh, many people can attest to knowing when something is wrong with a loved one - a niggling concern, worry or an irrational fear, just like Arpita tonight...
But I shudder to think what will happen if she is wrong and has simply let fear take over...for Bhauji won't hesitate to use this in her bid to get Avdesh to realise Arpita is the wrong woman for him, that she isn't strong enough to cope with their way of life....if Avdesh was to see her in this state, and he is not hurt, even he will be concerned....lately there has been too much fear in her face...repeatedly she has been told that this is 'our life, be strong, cope with it'...There will come a time when Avdesh will realise the mental torture she is going through and his love will force him to remove her from a situation that is causing her pain.....
