Chapter 2

Far away unware of what destiny has in store for her,the bride looks radiant and gloriously happy in her bridal attire."are isse dekho tho ,jiju ke khayalon mein aise khoyi hai ki hamari baaton ka kuch asar hi nahi hai-Gulaal abhi se yeh haal hai tho aage chalkar tu haemin bhool hi jaayegi"Gulaal blushed and smiled shyly listening to her best friend Dhani."meri didi ko aise mat chedo,woh haq tho sirf mera hai"says her younger sister Roopa with a mischevious smile.Right then her mother enters"chalo baarat aagayi hai,Gulaal tu tayyar tho..."and Poonam just stops taking in her daughter looking so beautiful ."aaj tu kitni alag lag rahi.ab ehsaas ho raha hai ki meri beti badi hogayi hai"she takes kaajal from her eyes and puts it behind Gulaal's ear"kahin tujhe kisiki nazar na lag jaaye"she says with a teary smile on her face."ba aap ki wajah se mera make up kharab ho jaayega" says Gulaal hugging her mother with tears in her eyes."acha chal ab jaldi kar-Rupa,Dhani,Bulbul tum log Gulaal ko neeche leke chalo"Poonam goes out to welcome the baaraat."main abhi aayi zara washroom hoke aati hoon"with that Gulaal shuts herslf in the washroom and she gathers her thoughts in the silence of the room.It seemed like just yesterday when she had met Motaba for the first time.He was her father Revji Shah's childhood friend and though now he was considered one of society's most powerful business men with his business extending to all parts of the world,the friendship continued.They may not have met each other frequently but they did keep in touch and to Revji he was still the old Soma.So when he put the idea forward of an alliance between their children,Revji was overwhelmed.Revji had simple dreams for his family.He trusted his children Yogesh, Gulaal and Rupa and gave them the freedom to follow their dreams.He definitely wanted the best for his two daughters Gulaal and Roopa ,he wanted them to pursue their goals,but this was something even he had not hoped for.Gulaal was happy with her father's choice,she knew he would never be wrong and the happiness on her parent's faces made her readily accept the proposal.She had met the person who was chosen to marry her a few times before and he had come across as a respectful,caring person and not to forget"quite handsome"thought Gulaal with a little smile on her face.The only problem was she was still studying and she did want to continue her studies and take up a job after that.Her father encouraged her to speak to Motaba."beta,mujhe khushi hui ki tumne apni dil ki baat mujhse kehdi.Main vaada karta hoon ki tujhe us ghar mein koi takleef nahi hogi aur teri padhai par bhi koi rok tok nahi hogi aur mujhe yeh jaan kar bahut acha laga ki tum apne dum pe kuch karna chahti ho.mujhe tum par garv hai "That answer cleared away her remaining few doubts and she felt very happy.Coming back to the present Gulaal looks in the mirror and thinks to herself"main kitni khush kismet hoon ki mujhe aisa parivaar mil raha hai.aur ek aisa jeevan saathi jiske sapne har ladki dekhti hai..."With a smile on her face,Gulaal comes out and her friends take her downstairs to the mandap where the rituals have already started.She looks at her groom sitting there with a solemn expression on his face and gets an uneasy feeling but is soon distracted by the happy smiles of her sister and friends.With the pheras taken the Panditji announces "Vivaah sampan hua.aaj se aap samaaj ke saamne pati-patni hain"Soon the bidaai ceremony begins and Gulaal tries to remain strong but saying goodbye to her family gets to her and her emotions flow freely.Revji tries to console her"beta mat ro,tu humse door kahan jaa rahi hai.Tu jab kahe hum tere saaamne haazir ho jaayenge.aur yaad rakhna tere baapji hamesha tere saath hain.waise mujhe poora yakeen hai ki tujhe us ghar mein koi mushkil nahin hogi.woh tujhe beti maankar tera khayaal rakhenge.isliye chinta mat kar .aur ab woh tera parivaar hai,hamesha unka khayaal rakhna"He makes her sit in the car and she starts on her new journey.In the car she looks towards her new husband for comfort and finds him preoccupied with a serious look.Once again the uneasy feeling that something is not right grips her "aap theek tho hain,koi baat hai kya jo aapko pareshaan kar rahi hai"she asks in a small voice."nahi, kuch nahi"he answers abruptly without even looking at her leaving her confused but before she could ask him anything more they reach their destination.After reaching her new home the Griha pravesh pooja is completed and then the ladies take her away.Panba embraces her"Gulaal,aaj hume ek bahu nahi beti mili hai.Tu is ghar mein Lakshmi banke aayi hai,isliye aaj se is ghar ki zimmedaari teri,iski maan maryada aur prathishta ka khayaal tujhe rakhna hoga"just then she hears a loud noise.It was Motaba screaming with anger holding onto a letter.Panba quickly takes him to a side and asks him calmly"kya hua aap aise'"Gulaal who had come there hurriedly after Panba was just about to call out when she heard Motaba"Panba,Vasant chala gaya hai,Woh hum sabko,Gulaal ko chod ke chala gaya'"
