Gulaal smiles shyly "woh aaj mera janamdin hai". Kesar replies angrily "tumhara b'day hai aur yeh baat tum mujhe ab bataa rahi ho". Kesar sees her smile dim, quickly gives her a sweet smile "chalo, koi baat nahi.ab tho pata chalgaya. Wish you a very happy b'day Gulaal". He held out his hand,Gulaal looks at him for a second and with a wide smile spreading on her face she extends her own hand. "Sorry,Kesar maine tumhe nahi bataya….". "koi baat nahi Gulaal,acha ab batao kya karna chaahti ho aaj?aaj jo tum chaahogi wahi karenge". "lekin tumhe office…", before Gulaal could continue Kesar replies sweetly "well, aaj office ki chutti.mere dost ka b'day hai bhai tho bolo kya karna chahti ho?". Before she could answer her cell rings and she excuses herself and takes it. It was her father "beta janamdin ki bahut bahut mubaarakbaad. Duniya ki saari khushiyaan tujhe mil jaaye..". "baapji,main aap hi ke call ka wait kar rahi thi.har saal aap hi tho mujhe sab se pehle wish karte hain na…..". "lekin beta is baar tho tujhe sabse pehle wish karne waala main nahi hoon na,main sab jaanta hoon" . "baapji aap ko kaise pata chala ki ke…..". Revji's laugh stops her "arre beta,itna chaunk kyun rahi ho,tumhe sab se pehle tumhare pati ne hi wish kiya hoga na…". Her father was talking about Vasant and Gulaal looks at Kesar standing at her study table going through her books. Kesar senses her gaze on him and turns to look at her and finds her looking at him in a strange way. Gulaal stiffened and turns away "haan baapji,unhone ne hi mujhe sab se pehle wish kiya.main bahut surprised ho gayi thi.pata nahi kaise pata chala unhe.lekin aaj unhe achanak se Singapore jaana pad raha hai kisi business deal ke liye." Revji sounds disappointed "arre beta hum tho tum dono ko lunch ke liye bulaane waale the, baa ne kal se poori tayyari kar rakhi hai.hume tho laga ki kam se kam aaj ke din tho Vasantji tumhaare saath honge aur shaadi ke itne dinon baad finally hum unse milenge aur baithkar aaram se baat kar sakenge.sab theek tho hai na beta…koi problem tho nahi haina wahan …" Gulaal feels tears welling up "nahi baapji,koi problem nahi hai,main bahut khush hoon. Vasant mujhe aap logon se milaane laane waale the,woh is business trip ko mere liye cancel karne waale the. Lekin phir maine hi insist kiya ki woh aisa na karein…sorry baapji". "theek hai beta,lekin tum tho aaogi na.tum kaho tho main tumhe lene aa jaaunga", Revji replied in tired voice. "Nahi,baapji iski koi zaroorat nahi hai,main Kesar ke saath aa jaaungi.aap usse nahi mile na-is tarah milna bhi ho jaayega.baapji,baa kahan hai?unse baat nahi ho paayi". "beta woh tho kitchen mein vyasth hai.tumhari pasand ki saari cheezein bana rahi hai.subah se lagi hui hai kitchen mein." Gulaal smiles fondly "theek hai baapji main mandir jaake,seedha wahin se aa jaaungi".
Gulaal keeps her cell on the table nearby and turns around. She sees Kesar standing there stiffly with a hard expression on his face. "kya hua Kesar…." He comes closer and asks in a low but steady voice "kab tak jhoot bologi Gulaal?" Gulaal is flustered and tries to laugh it off "jhoot, kaisa jhoot,yeh tum kya bol rahe ho.mujhe tho kuch samjh nahi aa raha". "samajh nahi aa raha yaa samajhna nahi chaahti Gulaal",Kesar asks with an edge in his voice. Gulaal unable to face his intense scrutiny tries to turn away but Kesar gets hold of her arm and pulls her close "tum apne saath yeh na-insaafi kyun kar rahi ho Gulaal.isse kisika bhala nahi hoga.na tumhara aur na hi tumhaare parivaar ka.kabhi na kabhi sabko pata chal jaayega ki sachai kya hai.aur tumhaare parivaar ko us din bhi utni hi takleef hogi jitna unhe aaj hoga yaa shaayad isse bhi zyaada dukh pahunchegaa unhe yeh jaankar ki unki beti ne unse jhoot bola,unse itne dinon tak itni badi baat chupaayi. Tumne kabhi apne future ke baare mein socha hai.baaki sab ke baare sochti rehti ho,lekin shaayad apne baare mein sochna bhool gayi.Gulaal, aapne bare mein sochna shuru karo.kab tak doosron ke liye apni zindagi ko jalaati rahogi.kab tak, Gulaal, kab tak",Kesar spoke agitatedly,unknowingly tightening his grip. And Gulaal is unable to say anything except look into his intense eyes which held so much concern for her. She was overwhelmed. It was as if time had stood still for Kesar. He had no idea what was happening except that he could not see her pain and the tears in her eyes broke his heart. Gulaal's hesitant small voice broke the spell "Kesar mujhe dard ho raha hai". It was then Kesar noticed that he was standing too close to Gulaal holding her arms in a tight grip. He loosened his grip and moved away in an instant. Kesar's mind was in a tizzy and his heart was beating fast. He turned his face away from Gulaal trying to control himself and his emotions. "yeh kya kar raha tha main?is tarah se kaise ….baat tho yahin karne aaya tha na main, lekin main tho apna hosh hi kho baitha.mujhe tho use aaram se samjhaana tha aur maine kya kiya?main itna jazbaati kaise ho gaya. Lekin kya karta main,uski woh jhooti baatein aur fake smile mujhse dekhi nahi gayi.aur maine kis haq se usse aisi baatein ki?acha hua usne mujhe thappad nahi maara. Kesar beta,ab apne dimaag ko thanda rakh aur soch ki aage kya kehna hai". Gulaal's quivery voice once again broke into his thoughts "tum mujhse naaraz hog aye, Kesar. Mujhe maaf…..", Kesar interrupts "nahi Gulaal,maafi tho mujhe maangni chahiye na.aaj ke din jo tumhe rulaaya.maaf kar do Gulaal. Chalo ab jaldi se tayyar ho jaao. Humein chalna haina". Gulaal is surprised "tum chaloge mere saath". "aur nahi tho kya,tumne hi tho kaha tha apne baapji se ki mujhe saath lekar aaogi aur waise bhi main kabhi bhi khaane ko na nahi kehata.paap lagega",Kesar smiles. "Kesar tum bhi na bilkul bhukkad ho" Gulaal teases. Kesar smiles and leaves the room. But as soon as he comes out the smile vanishes and a troubled expression takes over. While Gulaal is in her room, happy about the fact that she won't have to go alone to meet her parents. She puts on a red bindi, humming a little tune, with a small smile adorning her face.
When she comes down Motaba calls her over "beta tumne bataya nahi ki aaj tumhara janamdin hai nahi tho kuch tayyari karte na". "haan Gulaal tujhe batana chahiye tha na",Panba chimes in. Gulaal feels bad "nahi main bas abhi bataane waali thi.woh kya haina har saal baapji mujhe sab se pehle wish karte hain isliye maine socha ki uske baad main sabko bataa doongi". She takes the blessings of Motaba "janamdin mubaarak ho beta,tum sadha khush raho.bas maavdi se yehi prathana karta hoon aur hamaari wajah se…..",tears well up in Motaba's eyes. "Motaba yeh kya,aap mat royiye.mujhe bahut bura lagega aur phir main bhi ro doongi". She then goes to seek Panba's blessing "Gulaal bhagwaan kare Vasant jaldi ghar waapis aajaye aur tere jeevan ki saari khushiyaan tujhe mil jaayen". Gulaal is slightly uncomfortable but before she could reply Jamna Kaki and Sudha bhabhi come and wish her "many many happy returns of the day Gulaal" Jamna kaki continues "aur yeh le laddoo kha.darr mat sugar free hain.main hamesha apne diet ka khayaal rakhti hoon na isliye yehi laati hoon. Arre iski wajah se hi tho meri figure itni achi hai.pata hai kal hi us Mrs.Sharma ki party mein……", "Jamna,bas kitna bolegi.thakti nahin ho kya",Motaba's request shuts Jamna kaki in an instant.Sudha bhabhi tries to control her snigger and even Gulaal finds it hard to hide her smile. Rewa enters shouting "Gulaal kyun nahi bataaya mujhe, main tumse bahut naaraz hoon.lekin aaj ka din tumhaare liye khaas hai isliye main chod deti hoon.Wish you a very Happy B'day Gulaal",and she gives Gulaal a tight hug. "tho phir aaj plan kya hai?",she asks to which Gulaal replies "woh main mandir jaana chaahti hoon..", she goes over to Motaba and asks for his permission to go the temple and then to her parent's place for lunch. "beta, zaroor jaao.yehi theek bhi hai. Revji aur Poonam bhabhi tho tumhaare saath waqt bitaana chaahenge.lekin beta tum akeli jaaogi kya.." Gulaal tries to say "Motaba woh main Kes……". "Gulaal, chalo der ho rahi hai",Kesar comes in screaming. Panba looks at him sharply "tu jaa raha hai Gulaal ke saath". "haan, kyun". Paanba is about to say something "tu….", Motaba interrupts "Paanba, acha hai na Kesar uske saath rahega tho hamein bhi chinta nahi hogi.jaa beta jaa". Kesar and Gulaal leave the room. Paanba is not very comfortable with what is happening and thinks to herself "abhi tak tho sab theek hai.lekin darti hoon ki kahin yehi saath aage chalkar chinta ka Vishay na ban jaaye".
Outside the house Gulaal is looking at the bike with distaste "Kesar tum mujhe bike par le jaaoge", "kyun kya kharabi hai meri bike mein.ekdum nayi hai,latest model hai",Kesar defensively replies putting on the helmet. Gulaal firmly refuses to sit on it saying"main nahi baithungi is par, mere baal kharaab ho jaayenge aur main bhootni lagoongi mandir pahunchthe pahunchthe". "bas itni si baat,tumhaare purse mein clip ya koi rubberband hai. usse tum baal baandh lo aur phir tum helmet bhi pehenogi na". Gulaal looks puzzled at Kesar's idea "helmet…". "haan helmet.uske bina tumhe main kahin nahin le jaaunga.hemet tho pehenna padega". Gulaal gives into his request,ties up her hair with a scrunchy and struggles to put on the helmet. She gets angry when she sees Kesar laugh. He continues to smile but he comes near her and helps her put it on tying the belt under her chin. Gulaal stops breathing for a second when she feels his fingers touch her chin. Kesar feels a spark and his smile vanishes when he sees Gulaal staring back at him with a wide eyed expression on her face. Once again the same feeling of confusion and some unknown emotion creeps up on him and he can't stop himself from looking into her clear, bright eyes. A horn from the road snaps them out of the moment and Gulaal feels embarrassed. She looks down feeling the heat rise in her neck and cheeks. Kesar cleared his throat and tried to ease the situation "ab jaldi chalo warna hum yahin khade rahenge tumhe helmet pehnaate aur mandir mein bhagwaanji naaraz ho jaayenge yeh sochkar ki janamdin ke din Gulaal mujhse milne kyun nahi aayi". This makes Gulaal smile and in an instant the awkward moment gives way to the usual bantering.
By the time they reach the temple it felt as if that moment never happened. They go inside the temple and Gulaal goes to do her pooja. Kesar stays back and sits on the steps nearby after the prayers. As she is finishing her pooja she hears some whispers from behind. They were talking about her. As she is leaving she hears them talk "arre haan yeh tho wohi hai Paanba ki bahu.pata nahi lekin koi tho chakkar hai. iska pati kabhi dikhta hi nahi.yeh hamesha akeli hi dikhti hai har jagah". The other woman continues "tho phir yeh ladka kaun hai uske saath.kabhi pehle dekha nahi hai" the first woman sniggers and says "hamein kya lena dena isse.yeh koi bhi ho…shaayad uska…", and they both continue sniggering and laughing. Gulaal quickly leaves the place and finds Kesar sitting on the steps "chalo Kesar chalte hain". "itni jaldi ho gayi tumhaari pooja.mujhe tho laga ki thodi der aur baithna padega". "haan khatam ho gayi. ab jaldi chalo", Gulaal almost screams and leaves. Kesar is puzzled at her sudden change in behaviour but decides to let it go for now. They get on the bike and soon they reach Gulaal's house.
Roopa comes out screaming "didi, wish you a very, very Happy B'day.maine tumhe kitna miss kiya patha hai. lagta hai aajkal tum mujhe yaad hi nahi karti lekin main tumhe bahut miss karti hoon.sab miss karte hain lekin koi kuch nahi bolta",Roopa starts crying and hugs Gulaal tightly. "Roopa,yeh kya tu ro rahi hai,meri Jhansi ki rani ro rahi hai.mujhe yakeen nahi hota.rona bandh kar pagli ab main aa gayi hoon na.ab chal". Roopa looks at Kesar,who was smiling and whispers "yeh kaun hai? ise tho pehle nahi dekha". Gulaal replies with a smile "yeh Kesar hai, mera dost. Vasant ka chota bhai". Roopa nods her head "acha chota bhai,wohi jo shaadi se gaayab tha yaani ye tumhara devar hai". Gulaal suddenly stops smiling and she looks toward Kesar who had a similar serious expression on his face. Roopa takes hold of her and Kesar "chalo na andar chalo,sab log wait kar rahe hain". Gulaal forgets the uncomfortable feeling on seeing her father and mother. She runs towards them and hugs them both. It had been so long. Poonam ba lovingly asks her "tu theek tho haina beta,tujhe dekhne ka kitna man kar raha tha.acha hua janamdin aa gaya nahi tho hum log tujhse milne aane hi waale the. Vasant kaisa hai beta?tujhe khush tho rakhta haina….." she suddenly spots Kesar who was standing awkwardly to a side. "arre beta,maaf kar dena beti ko itne dino baad dekhke baaki sab bhool gayi. Kesar beta,kaise ho.tum jab bahut chote the tab ek baar dekha tha.kitne bade hogaye ho". Kesar comes over and takes the blessings of both Revji and Poonam. "haan theek hoon Poonam ba". Gulaal asks "Yogesh bha kahaan hai?". "arre beta,woh tho abhi tak yahin tha.abhi abhi uske office se phone aaya tho jaana pada",Revji replies. He makes Kesar sit with him and asks him about his studies and work. Gulaal looks at them and smiles and then goes off with her mother to help her "beta sach bol,tu khush tho haina",Poonam ba asks her worriedly "haan ba main khush hoon.aap chinta mat kijiye". "kaise chinta na karoon aakhir maa hoon main teri….." Gulaal stops her,gives her a tight hug and assures her once more that nothing is wrong. Over lunch Revji speaks about a marriage alliance for Rupa "unhe hamaari Roopa kaafi pasand aa gayi hai.ladka agle hafte aayega milne .woh America mein settled hai aur agar baat pakki hoti hai tho jald se jald shaadi karna chahta hai.shaayad agle mahine hi……". "yeh tho achi baat hai.lekin baapji aapne ladke ke bare mein jaanch padtaal ki hai na". "haan beta sab theek hai.acha ladka hai aur Roopa ko bhi bahut pasand hai…". Gulaal smiles "bas phir aur kya chahiye". After lunch Gulaal and Kesar spend some time with the family and in the evening they leave to go back.
By the time they reach back home it was dark. Gulaal who was in deep thought suddenly calls out "Kesar tumne aaj subah mujhse poocha tha na ki main yeh sab kyun kar rahi hoon". Kesar looks back at her in confusion "main yeh jhoota rishta sirf apni behen ke liye nibha rahi hoon.main nahi chahti ki meri wajah se uski zindagi barbaad ho.suna na tumne uske liye rishta aaya hai.agar unhe meri shaadi ki sachai ke bare mein pata chalega tho kya woh Roopa ko apnayenge.nahi kyunki dosh chaahe ladke ka ho samaaj hamesha ladki par hi sawaal uthaatha hai.usi par ungliyaan uthengi.aur agar meri wajah se Roopa ki khushiyon par aanch aaye tho main apne aap ko kabhi maaf nahi kar paaungi.mere baa-baapji ko agar is rishte ki sachai ka pata chala tho woh mujhe yahan kabhi nahi rehne denge.mujhse bahut pyaar karte haina isliye mujhe dukhi nahin dekh sakte.lekin main apni khushi ke liye apni behen ki khushi ko kuchal nahi sakti". Kesar remains silent as he doesn't know what to say. Gulaal goes inside the house and as soon as she enters"surprise". The whole family was singing the b'day song and there was a huge b'day cake on the table. Rewa comes running "chalo ab cake cut karte hain.aur Kesar kahan hai.usi ka tho tha yeh saara plan". Kesar comes in looking disturbed and Gulaal looks back at him with a watery smile,tears falling down her face. Kesar quickly runs over and takes her to the table. He and Rewa stand on either side and she cuts the cake. They smear some of the cake on her face. Everybody has cake and enjoy the moment together except for Panba who is not happy to see the closeness between Gulaal and Kesar. After all the excitement Kesar realizes something "arre main tho bhool hi gaya". Gulaal asks him "kya?" "maine tumhe koi gift nahi di", Gulaal smiles sweetly at this "Kesar,tumne jo kuch bhi mere liye kiya hai wahi mere liye sabse badi gift hai". Kesar gives her a heartfelt smile and her heart skips a beat.
