I don't remember Kesar ever trying to wipe away Gulaal's tears(I mean literally)Even when Gulaal was being hysterical blaming herself for everything he encourages her to cry.He never wants her to hide her emotions, instead wants her to express it openly cause he knows very well how difficult it is to keep everything hidden inside.

The magic of the DOP in the beginning'^^ You know, for how often this reflection in the pictures trick was used, it never got old or cliche in this show. In fact, it became like this repetitive pattern - where physical reflections were used time and again to project reflections of the mind!
And here's what's awesome about this shot - the alacrity of it (thank you Nur, for always taking such GOOD caps! 🤗 ) you can notice Gulaal's eyes on Vasant, and Kesar's eyes on Gulaal, in the first one. And then, in the second shot, GK eyes meet in their reflections on the picture. The symbolism is so stark. Kesar's eyes having sought Gulaal, and only her - the real person, and then her reflection. And Gulaal's eyes shifting attention from Vasant to Kesar. Interestingly, reflections have a curious kind of physics. You know, like trying to a view a picture in a frame under the sun? You can either focus on the obvious object at hand - the picture itself - or, focus on the surroundings reflected in its glass. Which can figuratively be interpreted as viewing one scenario subjectively, versus looking at the big picture of the situation. This curious physics, and its hence interpretation, further, yields this stark symbolism, because while Vasant is Gulaal's obvious one-dimensional focus, Kesar's reflection draws her attention, almost like a distraction to begin with, deviating her focus from Vasant, but in the long run, becoming the kind of reflection one tends to have on second thoughts - like a slow revelation - that maybe, in seeing the obvious (her late husband Vasant) she is missing out on looking at the big picture, and thereby being oblivious of the not so obvious subject. While Vasant as a subject jumps at her, because he is the tangible picture, Kesar is a floating reflection, one that cannot subdue the prime subject, yet, is like this lurking deviation seeking attention, compelling to be noticed like an irksome thought at the back of our mind that eludes and intrigues us all at once, because it can feel secondary to the prime yet inexplicably a crucial point being missed all at once!
The shock in her eyes to be caught in this unguarded moment of vulnerability by KESAR is interesting...ofcourse her first defensive reaction is to try and hide those tears...but the emotion in his eyes as he watches her *sigh*I tend to think she would have reacted similarly to anyone's presence. The difference is how easily she goes back to the vulnerability - happy and sad - in Kesar's presence, which would not be the case otherwise ... an exception might be MB, but that too depends on how vulnerable she is! The moment Kesar comments over why the need to hide her tears for VB - is like, not a moment of license for Gulaal, but this moment of intimacy - where Kesar has been included in the GV space. Its like that one statement sets him apart from being an outsider, which is categorically everyone in her life otherwise. And like you said elsewhere Nur - the perfection of this script in being so precise with dialog, never ever going overboard 👏 in how much is conveyed of Kesar's heart, and how much perceived by Gulaal! For Kesar, his pride in her fidelity and his love for her co-existing; for Gulaal the ease of not having to hide herself from someone, who at times becomes suspiciously concurrent with her own person!
It's one of the most beautifully treated relationships in this show...that there was never any resentment in Kesar...to him Gulaal always belonged to him and he knew that Gulaal loved Vasant madly...no two ways about it...there was nothing bitter in his heart about it...he respected and loved her more than ever FOR her love towards Vasant...I think what's different here, than every other such love story with one hero, and then another, is not just the respect Kesar has for Gulaal's love for his brother, but the ironic need he has of her having this love for Vasant. Like its a criteria that MUST be fulfilled, for his own love to gain blood! He doesn't just allow her love for Vasant that space it deserves for her sake, or Vasant's, but as much for his own self. Interestingly, his grudge stems from how he subconsciously translates her betrayal towards his brother as a betrayal uniquely towards himself. And his love too has a similar sense, like her love for Vasant in an odd way gives him firm reason believe in her love for him. And how beautiful is it, that it is Gulaal's love for Vasant, for his sapna, that in a way paves path for her love for Kesar to become what it does!
And for the first time in this scene, at Gulaal's prompt, does he finally move his eyes away from her, to oblige bade bhaiya ki photo 😆 Reminds of the jay parvati vrat time, when his eyes are all for Dushyant and Gulaal nudges him to pay attention to the praying, he obliges with half a mind and no heart and only momentarily, before returning to his target 😆 Just like his cursory hello to Vasant Bha's photo here, to return focus to Galool ☺️
I love this shot! There is this kind of melancholy mixed with satisfaction in Kesar's little smile as Gulaal fails at her upkeep of khushi ke aansu act and goes back to her real emotions. A satisfaction, partly from her candid fidelity, and satisfaction, perhaps subconsciously, from how she gives up on trying to act falsely around him.Kesar's dimag ki batti jalli expression - I love the whole range of these we have, don't you all?! 😆 It's so cute and adorable, how quickly his mind responds to the cues - like the most recent one we saw when Gulaal and him share that quick exchange over cheering up Talli. Or say, the night they play ludo? 😆 Or like the time he notices Gulaal's off expression when her friends have just given her that you need to value Kesar and his love pep talk, and remembers Champa... or again, when Gulaal is in such throes and leaving his room and he orders her not, then at her broken person, remembers Champa yet again 😆 And oh-so-many more! Nur once said how Kesar was not the brightest bulb 😆 but at the slightest cue from Gulaal, or at the slightest sign of her need, he becomes this powerhouse of dimaag ki battis 😆

And Gulaal's eyes shifting attention from Vasant to Kesar. Ahaa! You caught that too! LOL...that's why I capped it...the pictures seem very similar until you look closely and notice the shift in Gulaal when she notices Kesar...the way her eyes move from Vasant to Kesar...Kesar's gaze has been on her throughout...she finally looks up at him and their eyes meet as you said...beautiful symbolism, truly.

Ahhh LOVE how you put this👏👏👏...there is too too TOO much to them...I feel overwhelmed just reading and thinking about it😆...it's all there...Her love for Vasant in a sense always solidified his love for her...a pre-requisite almost like you said...and that is why he takes that possibility of betraying Vasant as a betrayal towards himself as well...just like her love for Vasant makes him have faith in her at every level including her love for him...and yes for Gulaal too...how that love grows is just GENIUS writing that is very hard to explain to a viewer in passing.
