KESAR AT THE PANCHAYAT

Kesar stood there nervously waiting for the proceedings to start. He was more anxious when Gulaal was explaining her stand and almost reconciled to her claims. He was feeling lost when she said that he should be ready now to lead a happy life with a girl of her age. When he looked at her then we could clearly see what was running in his mind that his happiness begins and ends with Gulaal and none else. He was hurt when she requested to free them from this "bondage".

With a slow pace yet confidently Kesar comes forward. Kesar said with a lump in his throat that he too was human. "Mei bhi insaan hoon" could make you feel his hurt and pain. Pleading his case he said he is not clay material that could be mold to any shape as required but a living breathing person full of life and feelings. How sad, he had to argue his point to be treated as a human being in the first place. The direct hit at Gulaal left her guilty.

Kesar was calm and composed even when he argued about the validity of Deeyarvatu, the significance of the ritual in society and that he lived with the thought that he was married. Kesar criticized the public in a way that when this relationship was forced on to him when he was a minor unable to understand the impact of this marriage, the society had given its approval. He defended his stand that being an adult even law would permit him to decide his future and that his happiness lies in Gulaal remaining his wife. ALL VALID POINTS, No one could deny anything that he said. And Kesar was firm in his decision so obviously separation on mutual consent was ruled out.

Yet after stating his opinion, Kesar with a shrug, was reconciled to abide by the Panchayat decision.

Dushyant's words first shocked Kesar that their Deeyarvatu's acceptance by the society was a wrong decision. Kesar was moved when Dushyant said it was an abuse to his childhood by forcing him into this relationship that denied him a normal childhood and adolescence that would have let him choose a bride for himself in the ordinary circumstances. His belief in the ritual and his loyalty to it has made him grow up with the notion that he is married and has a wife back home. Both Kesar and Gulaal were anxious to know the Panchayat verdict. Hearing the verdict, there was a momentary respite followed by total relief on Kesar's face that quickly changed to worry and concern when Gulaal decided not to accept this final decision.

I just don't understand Gulaal. As long as she was confident that the decision will be in her favor, Panchayat was important, when it did not work her way, she wants to revolt. I was thinking "Go girl, appeal to the Supreme Court!!" She is trying to tamper with judges' (READ DUSHYANT) decision. That is contempt of court. Sadly, Gulaal's plea was OVERRULED. Dushyant's harsh decision about the family (including himself) being ostracized left Kesar and the whole village utterly shocked. Wah Dushyant ji, such an impartial judgment without being subjected to family emotions'..you have truly become a saint!! Hope so!!

When for another time Dushyant cut it short as Gulaal spoke, Kesar was in a way wondering about what Dushyant did.

Kesar was totally ridden with guilt when Sudha requested justice for Talli especially he was extremely sorry and shameful for what he did when Talli steps in to say she does not want Kesar to be punished. He was willing to accept any punishment; his tears said it all because for once he did realize how much Talli loves him. When the Panchayat was dismissed there was a brief eyelock moment between Kesar and Gulaal, both realizing and acknowledging the impact of the verdict.

KESAR AT THE "GOSHALA"

The cowshed has been Kesar's favorite spot whenever he has been happy, angry or hurt. I remember the older incidents where Gulaal would hunt him down at the cowshed be it while making Vasant milk the cows saying he heard that playing music(his mouth organ)would yield more milk, for revolting against Gulaal visiting her parents leaving him back, when he was hit by Gulaal for gambling. And each time they would make up at the cowshed.

Gulaal realized she could find him here. She still believed that he was punishing himself and Talli instead of punishing her for deciding his life against his wishes. In spite of the tension between them, she has no qualms in holding his hand and asking him the real reason for it. Very calmly and confidently Kesar told her in a low voice 'Reason is simple, I am in love with you. For him that was the most simple and real reason that he loves her. That realization was his truth. Gulaal was shocked beyond words, she had to step back to recollect herself but Kesar came forward to her and repeated the same. For each step Gulaal would move backwards, Kesar has always come forward to her. Very softly he said he realized quite late what makes him seek her or pulls him towards her, it's nothing but love. He had a sense of contentment when he said "yeh pyaar hai" as though he was cherishing the word "pyaar" just because it was meant for HIS GULAAL. His tears were out of love and he was exhilarated in shedding those tears for her.

I actually loved Manasi's expression here totally befuddled and bewildered by that confession from him. The reaction was expected, more so from Gulaal because it was as though asking him "How can you fall in love with me?" as though it was a biggest blunder. But have to be fair to her though she was hysterically violent with him. But Kesar kind of expected it from her and let her vent out her frustration. It was required so that they move forward at one point in time. He did not stop her, he was submissive. The way the scene was done was really beautiful. Though the slaps were exaggerated it showed her final frustration being vented out, he had to remain calm to let her be, the pull towards her and the pushing away along with flute playing in the background gave a special touch to their relationship. Her slaps was her denial at play. His quietness was his acceptance of punishment for what he had done to her so far or probably for his late realization.

l was soo looking forward to reading your take on today's happenings , specially the long awaited confession !😊 you never disappoint ! lovely post as usual ! 😊

By the way, just one observation, in KB you generally wrote on both Neil & Smriti' performances .
Here you rarely comment on Manasi.

I am saying on all posts - that i loved the last scene
As you said it was done so beautifulyl, portrayed beautifully - Manasi's reaction and how she played it was wonderful and so was Neil with his simple soft confession
Everything went well in the scene, and i still say the slaps added more to that scene, coz it wasnt meant to be harsh, but her reaction in saying 'how can you' 'how could you' and so on - and the music that went with it, made that scene even more great as i said the slaps with the music wasnt meant to be harsh
Kesar would of took everything she would of dished out at that point, and he understood she needed to vent out, one thing that remains is his love - no matter what she would of done there, nothing will change that

Thanks Ojasi. I am sorry that my response is long too.
In KB, Smiriti essayed a character which had layers of emotions attached to it. Simi was someone who was troubled and wronged by everyone. Her expression changes under that suppression from family was a treat to watch. When Abhi came into her life, the youthfulness in her returned. It was varied when she was a total young child who looked for support from Abhi though she always felt she was right in all that she did, her role as the older submissive daughter, sister opened up a gateway of emotions from her. The subtle expression changes that came about from her made me discuss on Smiriti and Neil of course.
Here Manasi essays the role of a DIL who is being almost worshipped by everyone. After Vasant's death, she has lived a mechanical life until Kesar came by and her concept of life what she planned for everyone went for a toss. Here Gulaal was wronged by Dushyant alone. When Vasant lived, Gulaal was bubbly and chirpy. When he died, her world changed. The scenario shifts from happy to sad. She is hurt from within but there have not been so many instances when her pain was focussed so much.Because she lives a mechanical life in front of others. I have watched all episodes after Neil's entry only.
The character of Gulaal is yet to see sea changes in emotions in the coming episodes. As of now, Gulaal does not show her pain and hurt in front of people and half the time since she is the "know-it-all" DIL, her emotions are unfathomable. When according to my perspective or capability to understand subtle expression changes come by, I shall certainly do for Manasi too.
This is not being diplomatic, but I need to mention that in KB, Neil and Smiriti were together as Abhi and Simi right from the start. So we get attched to the characters as one. So there were more scenes of them together and ofcourse their sizzling onscreen chemistry ( which will always be something close to my heart forever) forces one to analyse the scene together.
When Kesar and Gulaal scenes are more to come in future, when Gulaal reciprocates feelings for Kesar, probably it would become easier for me to analyse their scenes together.

Beautifully discussed. Actually what you have mentioned about Kesar at Goshala, when he was young left me nostalgic. Nice to know you have taken the effort to understand the Kesar Gulaal bond from start.

MeySimi, great insights again.

I loved the panch scene, it was so well done and gave Sushant an opportunity to display his skills. I am happy that the creatives showed the integrity of a panchayat for a community - I have witnessed a Pancahyat in real life and I am in awe of that grassroots institution in India.
Of course I loved the confession from kesar (the imli, aam ka bageecha and now the goshala are some of my favorite parts of this serial) - I am not a big fan of this slapping business that Gulaal is getting comforatble with...It is the first time I have seen NeilB in a serial and it is amazing how he stays consistently true to the character and changes his facial expressions at the drop of a pin - case in point being the change in his face after Gulaal's first slap. Both NeilB and ManasiP did a great job. And I am so glad that the bigamy track did not happen!!!
I guess the creatives are not hiring me as a panditji after all 😭...

Hi meysimi,
Very brilliant insight into Kesar's character and his emotions. I really loved how u desrcibed how both Kes-Gul used to make up at cowshed.
You asked why gulaal was still stubborn. You have already written the reason in your take. If you think from gulaal's POV, she could not find a single reason as to why Kesar was willing to continue the deeyarvattu. She somehwere felt that he is doing it to hurt her and she was trying all the way possible to break the deeyarvattu so that it dont spoil his life. Never she would have thought that he is doing tis coz he loves her. We as a audience are able to see Kesar's pain, his love for Gulaal but Gulaal has yet to see that.

Another thing is I saw Neil for the first time in Gulaal as Kesar and I got really really impressed just with one scene. That explains what a brilliant actor he is.
So out of curiosity I started watching KB though not whole. I loved Abhi-Simi Chemistry but for me I love him more as Kesar that coz I saw him first like that. So I think somewhere it depends on the first imprint about a person. Thats why we say first impression is the last impression I think.
