Let me tell u the whole history in short so that u'll understand more.
Gulaal is a girl gifted with unique powers to detect water even in a dessert through her anklets which will produce sound if water is present beneath the land.Talsagra gao was lacking water,their village head mota ba's big son vasant heard of gulaal and brought her there to get water.Though rashipur,gulaals gao and talsagra had differences,it cleared out due to vasant and gulaal.Eventually they fell in love and got married inspite of the fact that dushyant,vasants brother,(motaba's brother giga's son),loves gulaal.Dushyant,who wanted gulaal even after she got married to vasant and became her bhabhi,due to his evil intentions,when got an opportunity,killed off vasant by throwing him off to a lake or water.This happened when gulaal,motaba,motaba's wife paanbaa and vasant were going somewhere and their vehicle was accidented by durgesh.Durgesh was the first choice to marry gulaal but was rejected for being half male and half woman.(@ night he turns to a woman for serving his god)Gulaal knew that dushyant loved him after his confession when he was drunk.The young widow wanted to stay in the house to fulfill her husbands dreams to make kesar,vasants young bro,10 yrs old a good man and tc of family.But as a widow,she cant do so.She was supported by paanbaa mainly.Giga's dushyant;s evilness wanted to get gulaal through deeyar vattu,a custom through which a young widow girl is given chance to get married to her devar. Dushyants elder bro raman wanted property and pushed kesar off the terrace as he may get them.And for property,jamna,dushyants mother and raman forced gulaal if she wants to stay in the house,he'll have to marry dushyant.Gulaal knowing all evil deeds of the entire family,for kesar and others,with her self determination,when time came to deeyar vattu with dushyant,she does it with kesar by making kesar wear vasants mojdi.After he wore it,nobody could change the fact that kesar became his husband.And through her talks,villagers accepted it.Hope this helped.😳
