The lady officer smiled to herself as she was ushered in the DIG office. Well, it was not always when she had a case like this. A clear open and shut case, in which the top police officer was involved.
Her mind went back to the instant when the detective assistant brought in some fresh revelations. The driver of the bus was willing to testify that the man walked in the bus, just as it was about to depart, picked up the sleeping kid and got down, the lady with a hand in sling running behind him. The man was positively identified to be DCP Virat Chavan. Then the booking clerk stated that tickets to Kankavali were purchased using a credit card issued to Dr Sai Joshi. Sai Joshi’s Aadhar card was used as a means of identification. The officer had stared at this new piece of information incredulously. So there was no attempt to hide her identity and movement? No…the detective ascertained. The Officer had done a mental facepalm. How stupid could a DCP get? Not just stupid, overconfident, arrogant…He himself had handed over the piece of evidence to her.
The CCTV footage from the patio of CN was another clincher. It showed clearly a woman, still in a hand sling, being pushed and heckled by a uniformed policewoman. And when the woman had raised her hand in self defence, the policewoman had overbalanced and landed on the ground. So this was an assault on a uniformed policewoman? The judge wouldn’t buy it even for a penny.
“Yes, Ma’am?” The DIG smiled his welcome as he ushered her to a seat.
“DIG Sir, this case is a total open and shut case. In fact, DCP Chavan can be tried on many charges of child lifting and causing hurt to a woman..”
The DIG interrupted her. “Wait, wait.. You mean the accusations levelled by Sai on Virat..”
“They are true, there is plenty of evidence to suggest it that way..”
The DIG was silent for a while. “I had assumed it as such. Let me speak to DCP Chavan himself..”
The Lady from the DCW left after a while, her detailed report on the DIG’s table. The conclusion was crisp and to the point. Prima-facie evidence of child and woman abuse against DCP Virat Chavan. Her own suggestion was comparatively mild. As a woman and as a mother, the welfare of a child lies in a peaceful reconciliation between the parents. I would thus suggest an out of court settlement, a legal battle would further traumatize the child.
The DCP was shown in a bit later.
It was a further chastised officer who walked out of the DIG chamber an hour later. He was boiling within. How dare she…what did she think of herself? The DIG’s words, uttered in a no-nonsense fashion, hit him like tiny mallets. Virat, your situation is hopeless. There is enough evidence to convict you in court. Better go for an reconciliation with your ex-wife and decide amicably on custody of your child..
His own desperate words came back him.

The Superior officer had still tried to drill some sense in him.
“Yes, you cannot be. But your daughter is still a minor and that will happen only with the consent of the mother. And moreover you have married again, even have a child. So your case is weakened further. Had you not done that, I myself would have persuaded Sai to give up the child to you. But now I cannot..”
He swore colourfully as the engine refused to start in the first attempt. Was it something like his own life? His marriage with Sai. Which was a roller coaster ride to start with. Finally they had settled down in some sort of bliss. Then Sai had walked out, the accident…left him broken from within. Then the little boy Vinu..had led to his marriage with Patralekha, his brother’s widow. Cursing himself for the day, he never realized when he had arrived to his mansion. Entirely on an autopilot.
“Hey you are back!” Patralekha, rearranging the cushions, looked up. Something was wrong. The seething rage could be realized a couple of feet away. Virat stamped off to his room, without a glance at her.
BK gestured her to go and attend to him. “See if he needs something.. Maybe some juice or soup..?
PL would recall that moment in future with horror.
She walked in the room and was greeted with a volley of choicest verbal invectives. Virat sat on his bed, aimlessly throwing things around, trashing every bit of anything he could lay his hands on.
“Viraaaahhhttt…” She whispered carefully, touching his shoulder. He appeared not to have heard her. She repeated herself, a bit louder.
He turned to her and she froze to the marrow. His eyes were blank.
“Virat..” she shook him gently. “Kya hua? DIG sir ne kuchh bola kya?”
That triggered it. He burst out like a volcano and she took a step backwards. “Baat mat karo uss DIG sir ki. Main sab jaanta houn. He has a soft corner for her. And that officer from DCW, usko bhi dekh loonga. Mujhe zhoota kehti hain…Kehti hain kidnapping ka case to mujhpe lagega. Sare saboot mere against hain…Court main yeh prove ho jayega ki maine Savi ko kidnap kiya…!”
“Virat…dheere bolo..bachhe next door playroom main hain!”
“Koi farq nahi padta mujhe…” He brushed the concern off. She stole a quick glance to the connecting door. It was closed. Phew…She poured him a glass of water which he drained completely. She settled down next to him, entwining his fingers in hers.
“Acchha ab batao. Exactly kya hua?”
“Sai ne ek counter FIR file ke mere against. Yeh ki maine uski beti ko use chheen kiya aur use door rakha hain, causing her mental agony. DCW se ek officer bhi aayi thi, iss sab ke bare main janane. Usne pata hain kya bola? Ki main culprit houn. Mere khilaf sare saboot hain. Agar court main case gaya to..”
PL knew where this would lead. BK would blow off her top. And on top of that if it was true, whatever DIG sir said, even to an extent of10%..it would be a doomsday. She ventured cautiously.
“To…aage kya karne ki sochi hain?”
“DIG sir says, Sai se sulah kar lo..Bachhi ko apne pass rakhna chahte ho to Mother ki sehmati zaroori hain..”
PL was quiet for a while. Sai se sulah..was her worst nightmare coming true? But if that was the only way Savi could be with Virat, then he would make a bargain with anyone. Even Sai.
But she was mistaken. He burst out the next moment. “Sai se sulah..out of the question. Wo Sai, apne aap ko samajhati kya hain? Mujhpe case karne chali? Aur use kya lagta hain, main apni beti ko aise uske pass chhod dunga? Naaaa..meri beti hain, mere pass rahegi. Aur Sai, wo overconfident badtameez muuhfat Sai, rahegi aur sadegi Jail main…” He went on and on, momentarily forgetting that the door to the playroom had opened. The children obviously wanted something and now stood in the doorway, mouths wide open in surprise.
“Dr Aunty jail main hain?” Vinu was old enough to mouth his shock silently. But this was not the case with the little girl standing next to him.
“Meli aai jail main..kyoun? Police uncle?” Tiny feet walked the way from the door to where he sat in no time. The child tugged at his uniform impatiently.
“Bolo Na police uncle, meli aai jail main hain? Aapne dalana..kyoun?”Virat barely had the time to gauge the impact of how much he had revealed to his daughter. “Maine sab sun liya. Meli aai isiliye nahi aarahi. Aapne usko jail main dala. Aul aap kehte ho ki main aapki beti houn. Aap mele baba nahi hosakte, nahi ho sakte…” Heavy choked voice led to hiccoughs and tears rolling down the cheeks. “wwaaaahhh …mujhe aai ke pass jaana hain…”
“Arre Savi Bazha ruk…jara sun to…!”
“Nahi ho sakte…nahi ho sakte…Main meli aai ke pass jarahi houn!” The girl ran out of the house with two adults and a boy in close pursuit. The girl clearly had the lead.
“Savi…ruk, main bhi tere saath aa raha houn!”
That cooled down the matters a bit. The girl slowed down, just enough for the boy to join her. He looked back to his father and muttered with a hint of scorn in his voice. “Mere Baba ne Dr Aunty ko jail main dala. Yeh mere bhi baba nahi ho sakte. Savi, ek kaam karte hain. Jaisa tum DCP Virat Chavan ko adopt karna chahti thi na, waise hi main Dr Aunty ko adopt kar loun? Phir main, tum aur Dr Aunty..ek family ki tarah rahenge…khushi Khushi…!
