The main issue is not just the toxic content but HOW its shown.
Its like that debate about Kabir Singh.
MANY movies have shown misogyny and abuse but HOW it's potrayed is very important. If the way its shown makes it seem like its acceptable or glorified then it's a HUGE deal.
So the argument about Kabir Singh was that it was portraying abusive relationship as being ok.
If makers had actually shown all this and then shown V, PP and BK all actually pay a price, it'd be ok.
But they are doing a sham of showing Sai go to police but pp actually will get bailed out and Sai gets villainized as "swarthi", "immature", "possessive" , "revenge seeking" etc. Whereas pp is bechaari and V is mahaan, righteous, forgiving and BK is just conservative but heart in right place. Thats the crux of the problem. This highly inaccurate representation of the characters. What the makers show is exact opposite of what the characters are, but they are glorifying abusive characters.
This whole precap of pp arrest is just a sham for them to cover their ass and say- we did show police complaint being filed. Arey what use is complaint when ips himself is gonna bail her out and the leap promo is showing her happy with a son calling her maa?!
If the leap promo had been pp getting released from jail coming back for revenge, we would still look forward knowing that ok at least she was punished and they have to bring her back for more revenge for drama but at least the narrative is clear that she is evil. It won't be this bechaari, depressed person crap they are forcing.
The thing is most of the sane audience can clearly see that their narrative is inappropriate and call it out , yet they are shoving it down our throat.
But theres impressionable minds and many people out there who may be adversely affected. Either because content itself is too triggering pr because they get the wrong message.
Makers do have a social responsibility whether they like it or not.
It has been proven that years of conditioning from movies and songs etc is definitely responsible for men thinking "naa mein haan hai", ignoring a woman's consent. It's deep rooted conditioing and it has come e from people consuming many many such ads, songs, movies, tv shows etc etc . Infact in an Australian court a guy was acquited for eve teasing charges because his lawyer used his clients conditioning from bollywood movies as a defense. The court ruled that the client essentially didn't realize the gravity of his sctions because such behavior was normal where he grew up!
So its not just a tv show and they cant get away by saying fiction hai. Kuch bhi chalta hai.
Nahi chalta hai.
I really wish something would make them realize that!
