Their objections are mostly flimsy but you know I'll share a real case story: There was a couple that was pushed to filing for divorce because the widowed mother-in-law (only son's mother) would get offended even if she found out that the couple went to have coffee together, if they came back home and refused to have evening tea as 'family time', she would sulk for days on end assuming that they went to have tea without her. The girl accommodated the mother for a few years because they were madly in love but after a point, she began to see the toxicity and though the husband was supportive, he couldn't leave the mother alone and staying together was untenable. Ultimately they did move out together after a lot of counselling to make them free from the guilt of 'abandoning' a toxic parent. They left the house owned by the mother instead of asking her to leave but she was not someone who could live alone so there is a side saga that continued...

Truth is stranger than fiction..

I can relate to this case. One of my close friend is in such a situation. Her husband's father passed away when he was like 10 and its just been him and his mother since then. The mother does not want to share the guy at all. Even a simple date needs proper planning and informing in advance and he has to compensate for the date with his wife, but taking his mom some place.

Its been 8 years already and her mil has toned down just a bit, but not much. I am not sure how long their marriage will last, but they have put so many things in life on hold just to satisfy the mil.
