Because what she asked was true. That was asked in the past and when he married her he told her this, also from what I understood he only said that he has promised someone else that he can't let someone in his life (dil mein, zindagi mein). But the jooth he meant was for what she is claiming now.

In Tamil version too, he denies. After some episodes Pakhi's character too denies in totally different scenario. There will be some function at her parent's house where she traps Saranya (Sai) in a theft case.In court proceeding of this case Sathya(pakhi) says that Saranya is alleging such vicious accusations. She never loved Vikram and waiting hopelessly for her Mia husband

Pakhi is his past and now at present time he doesn't have any feelings whatsoever for her. So, in a way he spoke the truth. Sai is stuck in the past and I guess both of them will have to make an effort to come out and make their marriage work.

What I think is that he knows deep down that he likes Sai and has accepted her as his life partner. So the way Sai thinks he loves Pakhi, he doesn't agree with her. But the writers have forgotten to show us his realization and Virat is unable to understand that if one doesn't explain the truth the other person won't understand.
