I agree with you... I wander is it her ego that is making her say this (as she doesn't want to loose to Savitri and the girls and her position in the house hold) or is it the blind love for her son that is making her fight for yuvraj?

I think it's both...her ego and the fact that she has a hold in the house and over Savitri and her girls, and the fact that she does love her son and thinks of him as supreme over the others in the house because he is a guy and not a girl. Had Menka not given birth to Yuvraj (supposedly), then she would've never gotten the status she has now. And now that Menka's own son ruined their reputation, she's trying to save it before it goes down even further. But she's the one who is going down because of how she ill-treats the girls and Savitri all the time. This is her punishment.
