Chapter 117
“Good afternoon everyone, I’m Chef Annabelle Richards, please call me Chef Richards or just Chef” Annabelle Richards introduced herself walking into the large training kitchen.
“Please choose a station then introduce yourselves from the right” she pointed to her right and listened to each new member of the class as they stated their name, age and occupation.
“In front of you, you’ll find eggs, flour and milk” she called out loudly. “What do you think we’re starting to make for our first beginner’s session?”
“Pancakes” someone called out.
“Yes, pancakes” she nodded. “Now, each session of mine will be different, sometimes breakfast, sometimes tea and dinner we’d be cooking” she explained walking down the aisle taking in the faces of her new students.
“Like, tonight I’d be teaching something different so if you were to come tonight you’d learn something new. There are going to be repeats of other classes sometimes because it wouldn’t be fair to teach one class one dish and not teach the same to the next” she continued.
“Now moving on, please follow my instructions” she returned to her station and faced the class. She then taught them step by step on how to make pancakes, the results varied from each person. Some pancakes turned out rubbery and others came apart, some were shapeless and some perfected it on their first go. Geet’s pancake turned out to be shapeless, it tore from the edges but it tasted good. Geet felt pleased even though it didn’t look anywhere near perfect as Chef Richards.
“What…” Amelia yelped when she felt a hand capture her wrist and pull her, she looked up and noticed it was Karan who’d dragged her to a quiet corner.
Karan wanted to be patient with Amelia, he really did. But seeing her quiet and avoiding him irked him and he wanted to know why she was avoiding him. The death of his niece hurt everyone in this house, it still ached to be in close proximity to his niece’s grave. So he decided to get some answers, he noticed Amelia headed out the front door without even saying bye to him and he figured this was the perfect opportunity.
“What are you doing?” Amelia scowled crossing her arms in front of her when he turned around facing her, they were behind the large trees near the swing.
“I want answers Ames, you… you’ve been avoiding me” he responded firmly. “What is going on with you? Everyone is still hurting with… but you’ve detached yourself from me”.
“It’s not that” Amelia averted her eyes.
“What’s going on with you then?” he gripped her upper arms and made her stare at him. “Why are you avoiding me?” he grated pulling her close. “Haven’t we come a long way since...”
“I can’t Karan” she pulled away from him. “I thought I wanted this but I don’t want it” she replied.
“Don’t you dare” he grabbed her arm before she could escape. “You wanted to be a Khurana, you wanted to be my wife” he hissed. “Don’t you dare do this. Tell me what the f*ck is going on”.
Amelia stared at him, she could see she was hurting him. She closed her eyes and turned her head, she bit down on her lower lip when she felt his lips graze the side of her neck.
“Tell me, what’s going on” he whispered.
“This… is over” she responded softly.
His fingers loosened and she took her opportunity, she turned and ran towards her car. She hadn’t been a woman who avoided confrontation, she was the woman who confronted and won. But she couldn’t win this. She was trapped and losing.
Once Maan had stocked the fridge and the kitchen cupboards up, he’d changed into his suit and decided to head to his new office building. He’d decided to take a taxi rather than the bus this time, he’d paid the driver and climbed out.
Maan walked towards the front desk and looked at the receptionist who’d stood offering a smile.
He hadn’t been inside his new building, he’d shown Geet where the office was situated.
“Hi, how can I help?” she asked politely.
“I’ve come to meet Mr Singhania” Maan answered, not telling her that he was in fact the boss. He wanted to know how his office was working in his absence.
“Your name?” she asked.
“Just tell him Maan is here” he responded.
She nodded and picked up the phone, “Hi Arjun, I’ve got a Mr Maan downstairs”
She hummed then cut the call, “Please take a seat, Arjun will be down soon” she pointed to the waiting area.
“Maan” Arjun smiled walking over and held out his hand.
“Arjun” Maan nodded and shook his head. “How are you?”
“I’m good, I’m good” he smiled. “C’mon through, I’ll give you a tour of your own place”
“Thanks, actually I’m here to only look around today. I don’t want them to know I’m their boss” Maan explained.
“Sure, you wanting to make sure I done my job well at managing this office?” Arjun arched his brows.
“If I knew you’d let me down, I wouldn’t have appointed you as my general manager” Maan replied.
“That’s true” Arjun nodded jokingly. “Like you wanted, the top floor is your space” he responded. “You’ll have to hire some interior designers to design though to your taste” he added.
Arjun then showed Maan the office floors, each floor had different departments. The first floor had his administration team, the second had the designers, the third floor was made up of second year designers and so on. The floor before his was his finance department, and the final floor was his.
There was a total of 12 floors in the building. Maan couldn’t help but feel pride as he took in his building, it was hard to make a mark in Delhi but making a mark in the city of Manchester that too in Piccadilly Gardens was a greater accomplishment.
“I’m surprised by some of the dishes I’ve seen from beginners” Chef Richards spoke once everyone had tidied up their stations. “Making 4 new dishes is quite really good and some of them turned out to be really nice” she smiled. “We’ve got around 15 minutes left so we’ll finish it off with dessert from Tanisha Rayyan”.
Geet looked surprised as Taz walked in.
Geet squinted her eyes when Taz sent her a cheeky teasing smile and moved to stand besides Chef Richards.
“Thanks Annabelle” Taz thanked Chef Richards then turned to the students. “Who would love to learn some apple cinnamon fritters?” she grinned. “It takes 10-15 minutes to make these, they’re quick and easy to make” she called out.
Maan dialled Geet’s number as he left the building, she answered after a few rings.
“Hello”
“Geet, I’m around the office. Have you finished your class?” he asked.
“Yeah, I’m just cleaning up” she responded.
“I’ll be there in a bit and we can go out for dinner then head home?”
“Actually, I’ve got some containers of the stuff I made” she replied.
“Oh okay, we’ll have that then” he smiled. “I’ll be there in about 10 minutes”
“Okay, see you” she cut the call and Maan walked it towards the cooking studio as it was just a few streets away. When he arrived, Geet was just climbing down the steps.
“Hey you” Taz walked out narrowing her eyes at Geet.
Geet glanced at Taz and looked away continuing down the steps.
“You can’t ignore me. I’m your friend”
“No, you’re not” Geet answered and walked towards Maan.
“What happened?” he looked at Geet concerned then glanced at Taz narrowing his eyes. “What did you do?”
“Don’t you give me those eyes or I’m going to poke them with my skewer” Taz countered.
“Geet, what happened?” Maan looked down at his wife.
“Nothing, I don’t like her”
“Why? What did she do?” he asked.
“She never told me she was a chef” Geet looked up at Maan. “And she is so embarrassing”.
“Hey, I only said you should give that dessert to hot shot and sweeten his arse up. He looks like he’s got a rod stuck up there” Taz defended.
“You said it in front of everyone” Geet accused. “Her name is Tanisha Rayyan” she told Maan.
“The…”
“Yeah” Geet nodded.
“You’re Tanisha Rayyan?” Maan looked at Taz surprised.
“Why do you both look so surprised?” Taz scowled placing her hands on her hips.
“Nothing” Maan shook his head.
“You can’t stop being my friend” Taz climbed the steps and looked at Geet. “I taught you my favourite dessert” she pointed to the container Geet held. “I was going to teach everyone how to make frozen berry yoghurt but I taught you my favourite and one of the best ones”.
Geet looked down at the container then back at Taz. “You can’t embarrass me in front of the class anymore” she pointed out.
“Alright, done” Taz sighed rolling her eyes and smiled seeing Geet break into a smile.
“Now, go and enjoy your dessert. I’ve gotta get back to work” she chuckled and hurried back up the steps and disappeared into the building.
“She’s actually Tanisha Rayyan?” Maan murmured.
“No wonder that peach cobbler the other night was good” Geet mumbled.
“So what did you make?” Maan looked at the 5 different containers she held, he took 3 out of her hands and hailed a black cab that was passing.
“We made pancakes, French toast, grilled salmon with roasted asparagus and grilled cheese sandwich with egg” she explained as they climbed inside the cab.
Maan told the driver where they’d like to be dropped off then turned to his wife, “You learned all of that in one lesson?” he looked at her questioningly.
“Yeah, Chef Richards told everyone to take bite of one another’s then take the rest home” she informed nodding her head. “We made dessert with Taz”.
“I’m still finding it difficult to believe she’s Tanisha Rayyan”
“Mmhmm” Geet hummed in agreement.
After Maan tasted Geet’s first cooked dishes he’d praised her as it turned out good even though it didn’t look very good just yet but he knew she’d perfect the look of the dish, he then helped her finish off the dessert they both decided to go out together in the evening to walk off whatever they’d ate. They walked around taking in Deansgate, the sun slowly set and the skies darkened, Maan took Geet’s hand in his and smiled down at her as she looked at him. They continued to walk for a little while longer, as they cut around a corner they noticed Samir stepping into what seemed like a café and it seemed from where they were stood, Sanjana was inside and they both hugged.
“Are they cheating?” Geet looked curiously. “That’s really bad”
“They’re friends” Maan responded.
“But what if they’re cheating? Taz taught me a nice dessert, it isn’t fair to her”
“Maybe we should go” Maan pointed to the direction of their building.
“Maybe we should check it out” Geet told him crossing the road and glanced over for Maan to follow. He sighed but followed.
“I thought Taz isn’t your friend, you hated her this afternoon” Maan arched his brows as they stepped into the café not noting the banner outside.
Geet felt as if she stepped into a different world, her eyes widened in surprise as she took in the inside of the café. At the left was a large colourful library, shelves and shelves of stacked books and on the right was tables of customers enjoying sweet desserts and many reading as they sipped on hot drinks with their partners.
It seemed like she stepped in her idea of heaven. Desserts and books!
“Hey, what are you two doing here?” Sanjana noticed them and approached them smiling widely.
Maan and Geet shared a blank look then Maan recalled Samir mentioning being a business lawyer. “Actually, I wanted a counsel and remembered Samir was a lawyer” Maan responded.
“Is this where you work?” Geet asked changing the subject.
“I do shift work here, I work in the back” Sanjana responded. “Well currently, making it into my space” she added.
Geet looked confused.
“Oh, I’ll show you” Sanjana chuckled and gestured her to follow to the back. “Samir is here as well as Aditya helping me” she explained as she showed them to the back.
It was a large room that was currently being painted purple, one wall was left blank, the floors were black greyish dotted laminates. Samir and Aditya worked on hammering something in the wall. “It’s a room” Geet nodded looking around.
“It’s my dance studio that’s being renovated” Sanjana laughed.
“Oh wow” Geet looked at her impressed. “What dance do you teach?”
“I do various styles, I have classes every few weeks. They last for around 6 sessions” Sanjana explained. “Our first 6 dance sessions would be the Tango when I restart the classes”.
“Is she boring you both with her dances?” Samir walked over.
“No, it sounds great to do what you like the most” Geet smiled.
“You looked bored” Samir commented looking at Maan.
“I’m fine” Maan answered.
“He wasn’t bored, anyway I was going to continue giving them a…”
“History of your dance – she won the dance elite UK competition 2 years back” Samir finished.
“And that’s how this dance studio came to be, she wanted to teach now” Aditya walked over. “Now Sam, come help me put up these mirrors” he pointed.
“You’re both just jealous” Sanjana spat. “They’re jealous that their partners actually made something of themselves and are famous”
“Hey, I’m a lawyer” Samir scowled. “One of the best lawyers in Manchester”.
“And I run my own business, thank you very much”
“As do we” Taz entered with a tray. “We’re famous, we own this place together and our name is actually out there” she winked. “Lush books and Luscious cakes, everyone knows we own it”
“Rayyan is actually my name…” Samir drawled lazily and snagged a cookie out of the tray. “Shit, it’s hot” he hissed as he popped it into his mouth without blowing.
“You read books?” Geet asked curiously.
“Our love for books is what made us two best friends” Sanjana grinned grabbing a cookie.
“You’re not becoming their best friend” Maan murmured softly.
Geet chuckled and smiled taking a cookie Taz offered.
“Hey” Puja walked towards Amelia and hugged her quickly. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m good” Amelia answered nodding her head. “I went over to… Karan was there”
“Have you told him?” Puja asked.
“No” Amelia looked away sighing heavily. “I broke up with him”.
“Amelia…” Puja frowned, “he deserves to know”.
“I can’t tell him” Amelia shook her head. “I… can’t…”
“Amelia…”
“No, Puja. You promised you wouldn’t try to get me to tell Karan. Just be a friend and be there, I don’t want anyone to know”.
“You should've at least told Meera” Puja responded.
“Meera would quickly tell Karan, that’s why I’ve not told her” she sighed heavily. “I can’t hurt either of them” she murmured.
