PART 7
I did not know what to say, I was in no condition to respond to my employers statement. She was quite understanding; I knew she was rude with Maan, but I felt it was just her way to get with him on her terms otherwise Maan was a very strong headed and stubborn man. My first intuition was to go to him for help but his arrogance kept me at a distance from him and I was also not sure what he felt for me; though at many occasions I have felt that he cared for me but still I have doubts.
My employer very politely said, "Relax he has gone and I will not take him with us to Mumbai, he may come later; don't be scared"
She offered me a glass of water and as I sipped slowly she asked, "Will you not ask why I defended you?"
I as usual just nodded.
She sat on the sofa and said, "When you came in for the first time I too took you to be Tezendar, you look so much like him; but I brushed off my thoughts because if you would have been Tezi, you would not have hidden your identity"
I could not control myself and asked, "Why?"
"Well I have known Tezi for long. Tezi was doing his engineering form IIT Mumbai, he joined NSS and there I met him; he was a very nice boy, always ready to help others. Apart from this he was also very friendly with Maan and Dev. He always said that I was very much like his Daadi. I adored him like my grandson. He was a gem. He would have come to us on the very first place."
"That's why you are so sure that I am not Tezi. Thank you madam" I said with gratitude
"Wait, I know you are not Tezi but I am also sure you are not Luck at the same time"
"Pardon"
"I will not say that I always doubted about your identity, but yes I had a doubt when you asked for leave to visit Ghaziabad" she paused and looked at me to find something in my face, I crawled back, she continued, "that's the reason why I asked you to accompany me. And in the helicopter when I noticed how easily you adjusted and rather you were enjoying the ride; cherishing it; I knew you are someone from Tezi's family. Who are you?"
I did not know what to say, yes I was not Tezi, but what to tell her, can I trust her? Why did Tezi never mentioned that he knew the Khurana's? What all things I don't know about Tezi?
She watched me for long then finally said, "its 4:30 pm we leave now, you will fly the helicopter as I know that Maan will try to come with us and will not let the pilot come. But he does not know who he is dealing with; however hard he may try he can never win."
I did not protest and simply followed her command; I had Tezi's pilot's license copy also with me.
She looked at me and said, "Do not assume the discussion to be over, tomorrow morning I want to know the truth and it was only because of you that I raised the Ghaziabad land issue in the AGM"
I just nodded.
Next day was tough for me, I remembered whenever I have to face the viva, I was in living hell, this situation was same.
"May I come in madam?"
"Come in" said my employer
"Good morning"
"God bless you. Now tell me I am all ears" she stated in a matter of fact voice
"It was Sunday when the fire broke at Badi haveli, I do not know how it started? I was not there at that time. In the morning Daadaji had a heated discussion with Brij Uncle. And later Brij Uncle left for Delhi.
Lately due to our mischief we have been grounded for a week and that day was our last day of punishment. I was Ok with it but Tezi was always restless, he wanted to go out as it was Sunday and he had to meet friends and his fiance, so after Brij Uncle left, and everyone was busy consoling Daadaji, we slipped out through the servant's door.
Tezi took his bike and went to meet his friend; I had no plans so I just went to the fields and I flew for a while but later as I was feeling restless decided to leave.
As I approached the Badi Haveli I noticed smoke and as the distance shortened I was shocked to see my home on fire. I ran towards the Haveli but stopped dead in my tracks on seeing Brij Uncle; what was he doing there when he should be in Delhi as he told us?
I hid myself and called Tezi's mobile but it was switched off, I panicked. I called his friend's number only to find that he never came to meet them. Then I thought of calling Sameera, but there I saw her pacing, her family was also present and I also saw Maan... Sir there.
Sameera was talking to him. I did not know what to do. I just sat there, well hidden seeing everyone die. I had no one to console. I did not know where to go. I cannot trust anyone, was all I knew. After everyone left in the depths of night I went to the now burned house, everything was destroyed, I cried for long sitting there.
At dawn I left and went to hide in my old registrar's house, he was a man I can trust. I heard the reports and they said everyone died; the whole Handa family was burned. They also stated that the fire was not accidental as there was every evidence that fire broke due to some unknown chemical reaction.
On the 13th day I went to the now burnt house and found that some people were making enquiries about the twins. I identified three of them to be the same, I saw that day. I was now sure that someone wanted us dead; someone wanted the real heirs to die. I immediately went to the railway station and sat in the first train I saw, I was a mess by now, my clothes were untidy, no one bothered me as I bundled myself in the corner of the general compartment. The last stoppage of the train was Mumbai.
I loitered around the station and with the money I had purchased two sets of clothes from a street side vendor, I took bath in public facilities hut and changed in fresh clothes and threw the ones I was wearing, which were eagerly grabbed by a road side beggar. I had little money in my pocket and I had to use my bank money wisely, as I did not know for how long I have to hide.
I did all the odd jobs from car washing to helping the car mechanics; I cannot get a desk job without my degree and proof of education. Meanwhile I bribed a man who made my fake identity as Lucky. 3 years passed and one day I realized that my debit card has expired. Now I needed employment, I was on my last coins when this tiffin service boy helped me to come here and lucky for me you employed me. Rest you know"
She nodded, "why did you want to go to Ghaziabad?"
"I have asked the old registrar to have a copy of all the documents of the twins and he had arranged for all. I had to go there to collect them and I also have promised to give him money for his daughter's marriage"
She looked at me and said, you told me everything but you did not tell me who you are"
I kept quite
She continued thoughtfully, "you have clearly established that you are not Tezi, and then you must be..." She gave me a startled look and came near me and pulled my cap which I never take off, "OMG, why did it never occur to me"

PART 8
Daadi I know, will never do what I want; she is a complete drama queen, she thinks that she is able to get her ways with me; I let her think that she can make me spin on her fingers. I love her to bits and pieces even more than I love my girl. Daadi has had tough time raising us single handedly.
I was 14 when my parents were assassinated, though Daadi for long let us believe that they died in an accident, but as we grew up we had to face the truth. Dev was told by one of his classmate's whose father was a police officer. He was shocked; he came home all soaked in tears, but thankfully Daadi was not at home; I cried along with him but we decided that we will never tell Daadi that we know the truth.
Later we both tried to find the assassinators, we found that they were some gangsters who exploited the builders and forced them to give them money. When they asked our father, he lodged a complaint with the police and finally they were caught, but one of them shot papa when he was coming out of the court after one of the hearing, Papa instantly died, mummy who was with him was shocked on seein him shot and fell down the steps to be overrun by a police jeep. Later she died in the hospital. The man who shot papa was hanged to death. At that time we were at Panchgani. After that we returned to Delhi and lived with Daadi. And much later that is about 6 years back Daadi shifted to Mumbai when Dev got admission in IIT Mumbai. I took Architecture and Dev who is 4 years my junior took Civil Engineering.
I fell in love with a girl who is 3 years my junior in the college. She was a bubbly girl always talking, a complete chatter box. One can hear her entering the college. I tried to become friends with her, but whenever I went near her I felt like touching her. Therefore I avoided being with her alone.
She many a times showed interest in me and also hinted that we should go on a date, but I did not trust myself and always made excuses.
She had an aura that commanded respect, her way of movement was strange or I shall say royal, she behaved like she had come from some other world.
Whenever I asked her where she lived she always changed the subject. She lived in the hostel so she cannot be a day scholar; and every weekend she went to her home that means she lives somewhere near, maybe she was a Delhite but distances in Delhi must have forced her to stay at the hostel.
She dressed in the simplest clothes, a patiyala salwaar, a simple cotton kurta and laced duppatta. Her hair was always tied in a simple pigtail and her feet adorned kholapuri slippers. She wore jhomkis in her ears and a shining nose stud maybe it was diamond because it sparkled in the sunlight. Few of her hair always teased her temples like naughty lovers.
Whenever I saw her in the library she was always daydreaming, with her pencil gently tapping her chin or temples. My fingers always twitched to grab that pencil. Even in the studio she would look as if she was in some other world. I wondered when she studied and how she always managed to come first.
I had full 1 and year to watch her, I talked to her, drooled her but never let her know my feeling for her. When I went to Mumbai for training I came to know who she was in real. I met Tezendar there; he was in 2nd year and was associated with one of the NGO's Daadi helped. He was Dev's senior in college. He looked exactly like her, for few moments I thought that she was there disguised as a boy but when he did not speak for long I realized that I was mistaken.
Soon I developed a liking for him, he was a good boy and very friendly so he became my good friend as time passed. In six months' time I already knew that he was engaged to Sameera his childhood love and would marry her as soon as his sister's marriage was fixed. It was then that I told him about my interest in his sister. He asked me about his sister's opinion and when I told him that I have not even hinted her that I was head over heel in love with her, he laughed his head out.
He convinced me that he will talk to his parents and as he promised he told them. His father was quite happy and planned to come to meet Daadi but I asked them to wait for 2 years; as I knew that as soon as Daadi knows that I am interested in some girl she would force me to get married; she has dreamt for it since I turned 21. His father agreed. Things were going far too smoothly, Dev then told me about his love interest and introduced Naintara to me; she was his classmate in school.
I met Sameera quite often; she was a good girl and was amazed to know how dedicated she was to the Handa famiy, she was as royal as Handa's were.
But things do not happen as we desire, Tezi had called me to fix a date when they can come to meet my Daadi; I told him I would come on Sunday to meet them as at that time I was leaving for London for 4 days. On Saturday I returned from London and called Tezi, he told me that he was grounded along with his twin and Sunday was their last day of punishment but I can come on Sunday and meet him at a cafeteria from there he will take me to Badi Haveli to meet his family. I was excited.
Next day I called him and asked him to meet me at 3 pm. But he never turned up, I waited for him till 4 pm, I tried his mobile again and again but it was switched off. Then at 5 pm I called Sameera and what she told me shattered my world, Badi Haveli was on fire.
I reached there in record time, but could do nothing. Tezi, his twin and his family no one was around; after much of effort the fire was controlled but by then all was in ashes; bodies were found but strangely the twins were missing; I for the first time prayed for the safety of the twins.
Sameera was inconsolable. She tried to take her life and in the hospital told me that she was expecting.
I waited for days, weeks and months for any news from the Handa's but nothing came up.
Sameera's parents wanted her to abort but she refused and at that time I brought her with me Daadi was not in favor of her living with me but I was not able to tell her the truth and finally the old lady stopped talking to me;
I was now only MD of KC and nothing for her, we only talked business. Sameera was under depression and that took her toll; after 7 months she gave birth to a still born. She synced into further depression.
I heard that Brij was finalizing the deal of the Badi Haveli land with Chopra's, I marched in and offered him double the price, that greedy man agreed and on my terms the land deal was finalized but just before the registry, Handa's lawyers filed in the complaint stating that the twins were still not found dead and they were the real heirs.
