Chapter 41

"Geet..." Dadima beamed happily when she noticed both her grandson and wife walking through the doors. She stood to her feet to welcome them, embracing Geet tightly first then cradled her cheeks and pressed a kiss to her forehead. Maan came forward kissing his grandmother's temple hugging her gently.

"It felt without you both" dadima walked over to the sofa with them following. "Goa kaisa ta?" she looked between them noticing a comfortable atmosphere compared to before. Both didn't seem nervous or awkward being around each other.

"It was good dadima" Geet replied. "Where's Vikrant?" she looked around.

"Sab upar hai" Dadima waved then mentally cursed herself for speaking.

"Sab?" Maan questioned raising his brows noting the difference in dadima's expressions, she seemed rather shifty.

"Woh... um.. I told Karan to stay with me, and um..." she wondered how she would explain Meera and Amelia being here since Geet was out. "And Amelia and Meera are also here" she added. "Main bulati hoon"

"It's okay dadima, I'll call" Geet offered.

"Nahi bete main bulati hoon na" Dadima stopped her.

"Dadima what's going on?" Maan questioned her directly.

"They're moving your things back into Geet's room" she replied plastering a smile. "I love you Maan" she quickly added seeing the change in Maan's eyes.

"What?" Maan grit out.

"Maan you have to understand" she huffed. "Your anniversary is coming up and our relatives will be coming here and staying. They're going to think it's weird if both of you have different rooms" she sat down crossing her arms. "They're moving your things and I don't care what you say"

"Dadima there's 7 weeks woman"

"No Mr Khurana there isn't!" she then rattled off their relatives names. "They're all coming next week wanting to stay here for a couple of weeks. They've not been plus they haven't seen Geet yet or met her. Other than seeing a couple of photos" she exclaimed. "Because someone had such a big EGO to let them come visit"

"Dadima you're..."

"Awesome I know bete" She waved her hand in front of her face.

Geet giggled instantly covering her mouth when Maan looked her, she couldn't help but start laughing especially since he looked downright angry.

"And why are you inviting everyone for? Why not just Karan's family? I don't want anyone else here" he turned back to dadima. "We said small party!" he reminded.

Dadima stared at him for a moment then dipped her head covering her mouth and cried, both Geet and Maan were alarmed by her sudden outburst.

Since she could only argue and knowing Maan would refuse, Dadima decided to emotionally blackmail her grandson because nothing else seemed to be working.

"Dadima" Geet sat beside her touching her shoulder feeling bad instantly.

"Geet..." Dadima sighed wiping the non-existent tears from her cheeks. "Bete aap dono ke pehli anniversary hai..." she croaked out. "The first time I couldn't enjoy because of him!" she stared at Maan narrowing her eyes then softened immediately looking back at her innocent granddaughter in law. "Iss baar main chahti ti ke humare saare pariwar ek saat enjoy kare. Aap ne bhi toh pehle enjoy nahi kar sake kyunki shaadi itni jaldi hogayi ti" she scowled at Maan. "Do din ke andar kisi aur ne shaadi ki hai kya? In the world you won't find anyone who has gotten married in 2 days"

"Dadima is pretending Geet" Maan informed as he noted her saddened face.

"Dekha... dekha" Dadima pointed.

Geet didn't want to go against either of them, Maan was going to be upset if she sided with dadima and dadima will be upset if she sided with her husband, so instead she fiddled with her fingers squirming in her seat unsurely.

"Dadima look I agreed to a small party" Maan told her.

"I don't care what you think or want" She retorted. "Why don't you just accept it the first time instead or arguing because what I have planned is going to happen"

"I'm not going to come" he replied crossing his arms in front of him.

"Bete you have to, even if you wanted to miss it you can't because the only person you're going to embarrass in front of everyone is your wife and they're going to question her" she stressed out pointing to Geet.

"Dadima..." Maan punctuated out.

"Now go and freshen up" she patted Geet's cheek then excused herself heading up the stairs to check on the moving of Maan's things.

Maan sighed heavily pinching the bridge of his nose, the thought of having family around and such a big event was stressing him out. He was sure the greedy part of their relatives will somehow try to get money out of dadima with gifts or something. It'd happened before; they were never there when they'd been stripped off of all their money. Not one of their relatives had stepped forward to help them when needed.

The only person who'd been kind enough to visit them and help them in any way possible was Karan's mother. She'd been a single mother after she'd lost her husband despite the troubles she had herself of looking after two young children she'd visited and helped them shift into their tiny 2 bedroom house. Which is why Maan had helped them out afterwards, he'd worked hard to work his way into the business and unknowingly motivating his cousin as well who worked just as hard to set his own business up.

"Maybe it wouldn't be so bad..." Geet broke the silence with her soft voice staring up rather unsurely. "Dadima has planned so much... and it's going to hurt her to ruin those plans"

"I know" Maan sat down sighing heavily. "She knows I don't like all this yet she goes and does this" he huffed.

She nodded and slowly stood to her feet. "I'm going to see where she is" she turned and was already moving away.

"Geet..." Maan called just as she reached the stairs.

"Ji?" she looked over her shoulder questioningly.

"Tell dadima she can go ahead with her plans" he replied, Geet stared for a moment confused then broke into a small smile and nodded. She turned smiling brightly and was climbing up the steps to tell dadima the good news knowing she'd be really happy.

Geet walked towards his room knowing the others were also there and hoped to find dadima there as well. She wasn't wrong, she shared the news with dadima and smiled seeing dadima sigh in relief happily, Vikrant whistled teasing Geet asking her how her honeymoon went. She ran out blushing only to bump into Maan.

"Sorry..." she stepped back biting her cheeks. "I... I didn't see..."

"Yeah I guessed" Maan smirked in amusement. "Why were you running?" he questioned. "What are they even doing in there?" he didn't let her finish or answer but walked into his room frowning at the changes. Since the room was quite large, dadima had the bed and other furniture replaced and set up mattresses on the floor lining them against each other.

"What's this?" Maan frowned.

"It's mattresses bhai, can't you tell?" Vikrant laughed however snapped his mouth closed seeing Maan glare at him.

"Dadima care to explain..."

"Well I thought since everyone is going to be here they might as well sleep together. All the ladies in this room and I'll be setting the 2nd floor rooms for the men" she responded. "You can stay in your room since you enjoy being a hermit"

"I don't know why I even bother" Maan muttered turning around and walked out.

The preparations going on full swing, dadima had Meera and Amelia go shopping for Geet to bring new sarees and dresses with matching accessories for the next couple of days whilst she had Vikrant and Karan working on getting the marque up and set.

Everyone as instructed did go to their respective dance classes, Geet and Maan were a little more comfortable with one another however there was also a slight nervousness each lesson as they were being taught. Their touches hesitant and careful. The instructor taught them on a beautiful form of contemporary, the gentle moves, the closing distance was taking a toll on the both of them affecting each other.

Just as Amelia guessed, Karan sucked, he didn't even bother, for each step he walked, for each movement he lifted his hand up in the air in boredom so she pleaded dadima and was greatly happy when dadima accepted it reluctantly and despite their tiff Karan didn't budge. So dadima blackmailed him and he decided to draw up a deal.

He promised to dance for one song that too if it's solo which dadima agreed, anything would do as long as he danced to something.

On the side Geet was attending work just as normally, also on the side preparing for her exam which was going to take place in 2 months' time. Maan always returned at 6 for 2 hours to take her to their dance classes lesson, when they'd come back home he'd hide away in his office completing whatever he had left.

After dinner all the lights will be switched off and everyone in their respective rooms, Geet and Maan were sleeping just like they had in Goa. On the same bed, sometimes facing each other or facing away.

It wasn't long till their relatives started to arrive, most of them praising dadima for choosing such a beautiful daughter in law for Maan. Geet opted for sarees and anarkalis as she learned from dadima there is a couple of women who are far too narrow minded in their family as well hence would most probably look for faults if she were to wear her western clothes and she didn't want Geet facing such trouble on the first time of meeting the relatives. There were also young cousins who were the same age as Geet who seemed too posh for her, Geet avoided them keeping close to Vikrant. When Meera and Amelia came she stayed with them. Maan was nowhere to be seen when their relatives were present in a room, he'd opted to avoid them like plague. He'll never forgive them nor give them any importance. It was only for dadima he was even bearing them in the mansion.

Everyone was gathered on the terrace one evening talking of the plans they had in mind for Geet and Maan. Karan and Vikrant had a barbeque on as dadima requested. Geet was settled near her friends and besides dadima afraid of any question being thrown at her and her not knowing the answer.

Dadima nudged her getting her attention. "Bete jaake dekhiye Maan wapas aaye hai ya nahi" she asked her. "Agar aaye hai toh unhe bhi yahan bulaiye"

"Ji dadima" she nodded standing up and excused herself.

She walked to their room and knew he was back as she noticed his briefcase on their bed, so she sat down and waited for him to come out from the washroom. What she hadn't anticipated was him coming out in a towel wrapped around his waist.

"Oh, I'm sorry" she gasped turning her head away when Maan halted by the door in surprise. She had watched him for a moment enjoying the view of his wet chest and he had caught her hence she looked away so quickly in embarrassment feeling ashamed. She covered her eyes cursing herself inwardly. "Woh... woh... da..." she couldn't speak at all.

Maan stepped back into the washroom closing the door smiling inwardly seeing Geet so nervous and stuttering. "Geet I'm gone. What is it?" he called out.

She slowly turned her head sighing in relief, she was feeling hot and embarrassed. "Dadima... wants you to come upstairs" she mumbled out.

"Yeah I can't hear what you just said" Maan laughed from inside.

She cleared her throat. "Dadima has said you should come up to the terrace"

"Alright. Let me just change and I'll be there"

"Okay" she responded.

"Geet" Maan called out.

"Ji?"

"If you don't go then how should I come out? You're not exactly comfortable with me walking around like this" he teased her.

Geet flustered biting her lip and skipped out of the room. She only hoped no one else noticed her red cheeks and hot skin when she walked back. However it didn't seem luck was on her side.

"Did jeej kiss you or something that you're blushing like this?" Amelia whispered trying to be discreet but wasn't. Maan's cousins heard and their eyes widened as they tried to imagine their stern looking cousin romancing his wife.

Geet pinched her scowling at her friend.

"You cow" Amelia hissed rubbing her hand.

"You deserve it" she whispered back. "And you're a gorilla"

"I hate you" Amelia pouted.

"And I love you too" Geet winked, she turned her head seeing everyone else turn their attention to the door and saw Maan walking in slowly.

He paused looking around and zeroed his eyes on Geet and dadima who were sat together in the far corner with his relatives surrounding them.

"Dadima you called?" he asked from where he stood, everyone else had quietened and watched curiously.

"Haan bete. Come, join us" she responded.

"I've got things to do" he tried to dodge her request without disrespecting her or being angry since everyone else was present here. They'd read wrongly into his relationship with dadima, they'd think he was being rude and angry at an elderly lady whereas it was completely different. Yes he didn't agree with her most of the times but dadima understood his way of speaking and it was all harmless banter.

"Maan bete" she stared at him firmly though her voice was gentle and smooth.

He walked towards where Vikrant and Karan were manning the barbeque they had put on and settled on the stool beside them.

"How did dadima get you to work?" Maan asked Karan grabbing a roasted potato and plopped it into his mouth.

"She blackmailed me" Karan muttered. "She's apparently going to announce my engagement with that crazy mental cow of a woman if I don't listen"

"Hmm. Good luck with that" Maan wished him thoughtfully. "She is going to get you married though and to her as well"

"Bhabhi we're nearly done" Vikrant called out, Geet was up on her feet with Amelia and Meera joining them in the corner since they'd promised to make the salad and hand out the food to everyone.

Maan secretly admired his wife, she folded up her pallu slipping into her saree as she stood beside Vikrant chopping up the cucumbers, lettuce and onions. She'd donned on a simple peach saree which fitted so well to her body, he didn't miss the tinkle of her anklets smiling when he heard her walking. What drew his attention was the belly chain that was around her stomach.

"You seriously need to stop staring like that" Karan whispered.

"I wasn't staring" he responded tightly looking at the barbeque they'd prepared. "What's with the barbeque?"

"Dadima wanted everyone to have a taste of us making it, if everyone enjoys it we make it for the mehndi, if not then dadima hires someone else" Vikrant explained as he placed the roasted ribs onto the tray.

Geet had prepared the salad and grabbed a couple of plates and started plating up whilst Amelia passed out drinks and Meera passed the plates around.

Once they'd done their duties and made sure everyone had a plate, Geet plated up for themselves, she handed Amelia and Meera their plates, made the next plates for her husband and devars. She avoided adding mango chutney to Maan's plate knowing he didn't like it and passed it to him. Maan was pleasantly surprised she'd only given him the food he'd actually only eat, she hadn't added the boiled broccolis nor the mango chutney but had given him the roasted chicken and vegetables with the chilli sauce and mini burger with chips. Geet grabbed her own plate and moved to return back to her side when Meera grabbed her forearm stopping her.

"Kahan jaa rahi hai?" she questioned. "Sit here. What's the point in going all the way?"

"Yeah bhabhi, there's enough space here" Vikrant added sitting down onto the laid out mats crossing his legs and started on eating.

Karan and Amelia ended up sitting beside one another, Maan felt awkward sitting on the stool and joined Karan's other side with Geet settling beside him.

"I still can't believe you've both been married for nearly a year now" Amelia commented biting into her roasted chicken leg. Karan smirked as the juice smeared to the corner of her lips and she hadn't noticed.

"I'm so excited for the anniversary" she added. "Dadima has planned so much"

"Why don't you shut up and just eat?" Meera narrowed her eyes warning her not to speak any more. They didn't want Maan to learn of everything they have planned because he will definitely disapprove. They then continued to eat in silence...

"Lets' all play charades" Amelia suggested once everything was cleared, Maan was leaning against the railings with his legs stretched out and tapping away on his phone. Geet was settled beside him on her knees with the others around them as well. Their relatives however avoided being too close to Maan afraid of what he was going to say. He already seemed bored and displeased being here, so far hadn't talked to anyone but Karan.

"Haan" Dadima agreed from where she sat.

"With a little twist" Vikrant joined standing beside Amelia. "The moves have to be danced"

"Yeah, and only films" Amelia spoke since other words may not allow dance moves.

"Teek hai teek hai" One of their elder cousins called out, they all clapped when Amelia announced she will go first.

Meera decided to play referee giving out the names, she quickly whispered a title in Amelia's ears and walked back to her place.

Amelia showed them of how many words there was, she then started enacting, spreading her arms out almost like flying, swaying to the music Vikrant had played then she did a sudden rocky dance move and pretended to be drowning then swimming like a mermaid. Random guesses were shouted out which turned to be wrong.

"Titanic!" Geet called out grinning widely, Maan turned his head surprised when Amelia clapped happily. She looked away blushing when she caught him staring at her.

"Your turn bhabhi" Vikrant announced.

"Uh... I don't want to do it" She shook her head cowering backwards.

"Bhabhi you have to" Vikrant didn't take no for an answer and moved towards her.

"Nahi nahi... please" she wasn't going to be able enact especially in front of everyone.

"Bhabhi..."

"Vikrant leave it" Maan told him firmly as he hadn't missed Geet's apprehension. "Someone else can do it"

"Alright" He grumbled. "I'll do it" he lit up and took the attention of their relatives. Meera walked over whispering another title, whilst some of the relatives whistled teasingly. Meera quickly walked away hiding behind Amelia.

"Thank you" Geet whispered when everyone else's attention was to Vikrant enacting.

"You're welcome" Maan smiled warmly instantly looking firmly when he noticed a couple of his aunts looking his way and Geet's. He excused himself when his phone started ringing and left, Geet was hoping he'd return but hadn't and wondered what kept him away for the next hour. And she wanted to find out.
