Chapter 2

"Bete kya hua?" Savitri Devi questioned concerned wondering why her new bahu was so quiet, could it be she was mute?

"Aap bol nahi sakte kya?" she questioned.

Her eyes widened in surprise staring back at Savitri Devi who looked at her with concern filled eyes. Geet frowned for a moment, the elderly woman's eyes held the same emotions as her mother's for a moment.

"Bete" Savitri Devi touched her cheek.

"Ji kuch nahi" she mumbled softly making Savitri Devi sigh in relief.

"Hum toh darr hi gaye" she chuckled softly and brightly smiled back at Geet. "Phir se shuru karte hai. Aap karte kya hai?" she questioned.

Geet dipped her eyes onto her hands that rested on her lap, what was she to say? She swallowed hard and looked back at Savitri Devi who waited patiently.

"Hum mama ke madad karte te ghar pe" She replied honestly.

"Aap ne padhai nahi ki? Aapke Daarji toh keh rahe te ke aap ne padhi hai" she responded confused, she heard one thing from her family and learning something different from her new bahu.

"Ji..." Geet paused. She pressed her eyes closed closing her fingers into a fist as she tried to figure out an answer, if his grandmother questioned her family then they was going to be trouble and if she lied and his grandmother found out somehow, she might complain to her husband and he'd probably beat her up. She looked back at Savitri Devi hesitantly chewing on her lower lip. "Hum.. woh... Pehle padhte te lekin uske baad chodh diye" she mumbled hoping that'd end her queries.

Savitri Devi eyed the terrified bahu of hers, she wondered why her granddaughter in law was so afraid, she wasn't going to eat her up nor scold her. She settled comfortably in her seat guessing it'd be better for her bahu to adjust, maybe she was just nervous she told herself mentally. She would obviously be nervous since she'd left her whole family and life behind and moving miles away where she'll be in a strange city.

"So bro what did our new bhabhi do to upset you so much?" Vikrant nudged Maan playfully.

"Do that once more, I'll happily break your arm for you" he replied back sharply.

"Wow she really must've done something" Vikrant shook his head.

"Shut it or I'm going to kick you out!" he threatened.

"Alright alright" Vikrant held up his hands in surrender and leaned back against his seat. "I'll go to sleep since it's going to be a good few hours" he sighed.

Maan leaned back as he tried to think of ways to avoid his new wife because knowing his grandmother she'd blackmail him to work for this marriage and he wouldn't ever do that. He wasn't going to build a relationship with her so he'd be the one to suffer in the end, he wouldn't bare out his heart for anyone to come and stomp all over it.

Geet's eyes drew to the scenery they were passing by, the trees swaying with the breeze outside, the branches dancing along to its own tune, she was filled with a sense of peace just seeing it. She should be grateful in a way for leaving her home as she'll now be able to enjoy the beauty of nature which she was denied at HP. She thought back to the day her grandfather forbid her leaving the house, he caged her in her own home making her suffer each day, despite the rules and the sufferings she'd gone through she was safe with her mother there but now she was going to a new city where not one person is her own, she didn't know what was to come. She feared she was going to face worse, she swallowed thickly rapidly blinking her eyes as they filled with tears, the thought of living through hell once more ached and with the way her new husband just climbed out of the car told her he wasn't exactly the happiest person on earth.

Savitri Devi sighed in relief as the driver into their driveway, the silence between herself and the new bahu was exhausting, the many times she tried to speak she stopped herself catching Geet staring out the window out of what seemed like keen interest and a sort of peacefulness. She looked at Geet curiously, she had expected a granddaughter in law who'd be strongly willed, talkative and even courageous of setting her grandson straight but from what she'd gathered it'll be her grandson setting Geet straight instead unless... Unless she did something about it she thought to herself mentally.

"Geet bete" Savitri Devi touched her shoulder gently but was stunned seeing Geet jump slightly at the touch, her eyes looking right back at her filled with fear. Could she have be... Savitri Devi shook her head, from what she'd learned was the Handa's were very respected and they loved their daughters, they wouldn't really hurt her. But then why would Geet be so frightened? Nervousness is something she could understand but frightened to such an extent that one mere touch sent her jumping and shivering like a leaf.

Savitri Devi cleared her throat smiling gently. "Ghar aagaye hai, chaliye" she gestured and climbed out once the driver opened the door.

"Maan rukiye" Savitri Devi called as she saw he was heading right towards the mansion without a single glance.

"Dadi it's late now, we'll talk in the morning" he responded.

"Mr Khurana move one step I will send you to the outhouse" she threatened sharply as she helped Geet out of the car.

"Dadi" Maan clipped out narrowing his eyes.

Savitri Devi ignored him and walked towards the mansion with Geet by her side following obediently and with her head down.

"Nakul taal leke aao" Savitri called stopping at the entrance. "Nayi bahu aagaye hai" she informed them. The servants followed out stopping behind Savitri eyeing the first female family member to enter the mansion, Nakul walked over and passed the taal and passed a bright smile to Geet's direction.

"Dadi what is this?" Maan stepped forward.

"I'm welcoming my new bahu" she grinned. "With her husband"

He inhaled a deep breath pressing his eyes closed and pinching the bridge of his nose, his patience was really running short right now, had the woman not been his grandmother he would've snatched it off her hand and threw it over into their pond. He opened his eyes to see her playing merry go round with the taal.

"Done?" he questioned irritated.

"Bhai just let Dadi do it" Vikrant spoke. "or she'll keep you standing here for longer"

Maan shot a dirty look in his direction then turned back to Dadima.

"Ab unko utaiye" she announced.

"What? Aapka dimag kharab hogaya hai. You've played your house game so now I'm going" he responded firmly and walked past.

"Maan" She shouted angrily.

"You're going to lose your voice" he yelled over his shoulder and climbed up the stairs hurriedly wanting to get out of the clothes he'd been stuck in for the last few hours and right now a cold shower is what he needed to calm his overworking temper.

Geet was a silent spectator, never once had she witnessed one woman raising her voice at a man, she might be his grandmother yet back home it was always the men with raised voices.

"Chaliye bete. Bohut raat ho chuki hai hum aapko aapka kamra dikhate hai" Dadima wrapped an arm around Geet's shoulder and it didn't pass her when Geet tensed, she shoved the thoughts away and turned to Nakul. "Geet ke samaan gari mein hai, le aaiye" she told him then moved towards the stairs.

Geet's eyes wandered around her surroundings as she passed by, the mansion was twice the size of their haveli, where at HP her home oozed with male power here it was different, warmth, comfort wafted from the rooms. Her eyes drew to the room she stepped inside with Dadima, she looked around her new bedroom in hidden admiration, it was so beautiful compared to her old small bedroom she'd gotten, she was 3 of her sized bedrooms could fit here.

Their eyes drew to the washroom door opening and Maan stepping out, he narrowed his eyes at both women as he scowled at them.

"What are you doing here?" he questioned resting his hands on his hips.

"Geet ko unka kamra dikha rahe hai" Dadima replied.

"Uska kamra?" he frowned. "I'm sorry Dadima, have you forgotten this is my room"

"Agar aap ko koi problem hai, outhouse is empty Maan" she replied back sharply.

"Fine!" he huffed out throwing the towel that hung around his neck onto the couch carelessly.

He opened the door to the adjacent room and slammed it behind him.

Maan paced the floor of his private lounge trying to calm his nerves, what exactly is his Dadima hoping? He'd gotten married but she can't be possibly thinking he'll be sharing his room with her. He brushed his hand through his wet hair in frustration and listened for the door being closed, Dadima wasn't going to budge but that didn't mean he wasn't going to explain to the girl his stand in this drama. He opened the door and stepped back into his bedroom and noticed Geet stood by the couch looking nervous.

"Dekho" he started pacing once again unable to stand still. "I don't what Dadima told you and I don't want to know but..." he turned around stopping his place and looked at her. "I don't accept this marriage. I don't accept you as my wife or the daughter in law of this house. So it'll be better for you to stay away from me and out of my way" he told her firmly.

Geet nodded meekly though nervous and afraid she felt relief when he'd said he doesn't accept this marriage, it'd be much easier for her to keep her distance from him, had he accepted her and this marriage he might've wanted to come close to her and she wouldn't have been able to handle that.

She watched him as he walked over to what she was told by Dadima the dressing room, he entered and stepped back holding a blanket and placed it on the bed. "Here's your new bed" he told her then walked over towards his bed and grabbed a pillow chucking over to the couch then he slipped into his bed and switched off the lamp leaving her standing the darkness. Geet walked over to where her suitcase was settled with the help of the moonlight that shone through, she quietly unlocked it and unzipped taking out a change of clothes and walked into the washroom.

She placed the clothes down onto the counter and started removing the jewelleries, her eyes drew to her manglsutr once she removed the necklaces.

The manglsutr was such an important and precious jewellery to a married indian woman, it was her identity, she recalled her mother guarding hers with all her might and the way her mother fought and cried when the women were trying to remove it from her neck after her father died. The importance that it held for her mother, Geet didn't share it, it didn't mean anything because neither did she or her husband accept this marriage. She wanted to adorn her neck with the manglsutr of the man she wanted to love and spend her life with. Her husband wasn't her idea of the man she wanted to love and she wasn't the wife he wanted.

She shook away her thoughts and continued scrubbing herself clean, she stared back at her image in the mirror after she'd scrubbed away the layers of make-up, the cold water splashing against her face brought a smile to her lips, it was refreshing and felt so nice.

She started removing the jewelleries that were pinned to her hair followed by loosening the large bun that was done on her hair, her wavy dark locks fell down to her waist, once all the jewelleries were removed she started on stripping herself from the heavy lengha.

Geet stepped out all changed and feeling a little lighter, she walked back into the room as quietly as she could as she guessed he was sleeping with his heavy breathing, she placed the jewellery and lengha into her suitcase and walked over to the couch, she settled the pillow and blanket then slipped into her new bed, though it was a couch it was comfortable compared to the hard mattress she was used to at home, she pulled the blanket up to her chest and let sleep invade her.

"Shit!"

Geet jumped up hearing Maan curse, she stepped down hurriedly and saw him holding his foot, his eyes drew to her direction and glared.

"You didn't find any other place to put your damn suitcase" he clipped out angrily and straightened, waking up and still feeling lazy he strode towards the washroom however he'd hit his toe on the corner of the suitcase and it hurt. A lot.

"I... I'm sorry" she mumbled out and rushed over dragging the suitcase away from him.

"Sorry? Like as if it helps" he hissed. "Stupid women" he muttered shaking his head and stormed into the washroom slamming the door behind him.

Geet closed her eyes covering her face with her palms feeling quite bad, she took quite a few deep breaths then let out heavy sigh, she glanced at the clock and noticed it was nearing 8 and wondered how had she slept till 8? Usually she was up by 6 in HP, it was probably the journey, she thought back to Dadima what if she was waiting for her to serve her breakfast, Geet looked at the washroom door silently praying he comes out quickly so she could freshen and start on breakfast, she certainly didn't want to upset the elderly woman in the first morning since the woman had been quite kind to her. She was brought out of her thoughts when she heard a knock, she grabbed her dupatta and walked over to the door and opened it hesitantly.

"Good morning bete" Dadima greeted her and stepped inside. "Did you sleep well?" she enquired however her smile faded as soon as she noted the couch and the bed.

"Maan kahan hai?" Dadima turned to her.

"Please Dadima" Geet whispered softly, she guessed by the look on the elderly woman's face she was angry seeing the separate sleeping arrangements and if she was going to blast her husband then her husband might take it out on her. "Kuch mat kahiye" she silently pleaded with her eyes.
